When I wrote back around Thanksgiving, I was reaching out for help with my long-haired dachsie, Brutus. He had blown a disk and both vets that I went to were pretty negative about his survival. I did some research and found this site. It was the best thing I ever did. With all your support, advice and letters, I have the joyous job of telling you that Brutus stood up on his back legs Wednesday morning (December 27th) and took a few steps. Just a couple of days prior, he was gaining a little strength on one leg but the other leg was as limp as spaghetti. I used a bathtub spa that my best girlfriend loaned me, messaged both back legs, and felt him stiffen his limp leg. Truly, with the help of God and my new friend David as well as all of you, it was a Christmas miracle. I could tell he was very proud of his effort. His tail was wagging like crazy. I am truly blessed to have friends and neighbors like you to give me the hope I needed to bring Brutus to this point. When he recovers, I am taking him to see both of the vets who were so negative about his condition and telling them to refer any other patient of theirs that may have a similiar condition to me, so I can tell them that there is hope.

Thanks, my husband just got home and called to tell me he is walking better than yesterday. We will have our hydrobath tonite and excercises to continue with the improvement.

Happy New Year everyone. Brutus continues to improve day by day. Just in time too after the heavy snowfall we had, it was hard for him to relieve himself outside. My husband shoveled a spot for him in the front yard as the snowfall is higher than he is. I will have to figure out how to show a picture of him. We have a digital camera at work. I will bring it home this week and try it out.<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm5.gif" border=0>

How did I miss this thread until now?? Well, let me add my belated congratulations and best wishes to you and Brutus, and good for you for not giving up in the face of pessimistic medical advice!
I hope you DO take your boy to the vets! It sounds as if they need to learn a few things, and seeing Brutus with leg strength should make a strong impression. You might save another dachsie owner some very real grief down the road!
Best wishes for continued improvement--would love to see a photo of your boy!

We learned that keeping the dog off the legs and providing crate rest was very beneficial too. We also have some wheels on order for our Mo. His back went out on January 5th and he too is doing quite well. Back in the early 90's I lost 2 dachsies within 6 weeks with back problems. Since then, treatment has been a much more hopeful avenue. As long as they are not in pain...wheels will help them get around. Our Mo is a happy boy today. I can't imagine how badly we would all feel today if we had taken the pessimistic route.
