Our sweet tempered peppy Gaudi has been having back pains again for about the last 10 days. (Here's a picture of him: He seemed to be getting better but was out of our sight for a while on our property Tuesday and took a big turn for the worse. He's been in the vets twice this week. Got cortisone shots, on Rimadyl and cortisone pills now. His back
end moves very strangely and he doesn't like to walk at all. I have him crated all the time except for potty breaks. The vet did that test where you turn down the doggies toes and one rear leg of his doesn't go back to "normal" position automatically which vet says is not a good sign. Vet says he's not a surgery candidate yet but if he gets worse..........he says then he'd have to fly to Seattle for surgery. My husband is not here so I have to handle this myself and its sad to see him like this and I pray he will recover and not get worse. He's such a sweet little guy.

Hi Bridget,
We will be sending rays from Colorado. Predsone (SP?) is the more traditional drug for treating dachshund backs but I won't try to second guess your vet. I've been told the surgical prognosis is better for those with slow onset symptoms than for rapid onset symptoms. Rapid onset syphons include those who go from no noticeable symptoms to complete paralysis in 48 hours or less. In those cases no delay should be taken in getting them in for a complete exam including a milogram and or cat scan to determine if surgery may help. With slower onset symptoms conservative treatment often gives very good results. Crate rest should be total for a number of weeks (generally 2-4 if my memory is correct) with the only breaks being the potty breaks and even then they should be carried in and out and not allowed to wander around the yard. When they start getting better is can be hard to keep them quiet.
Good luck,
Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

Thanks Tom and Debi for your concern for Gaudi. The pills the vet gave me are unlabeled but he said cortisone and I think it is Prednesone (spelling?). It's the one you take for 7 days and then taper it off. Gaudi is no better. But he sure is *hungry*! He sits in his cage all day and makes grrrrrr noises at me much of the time asking for food. Gaudi the doxie page (http://hometown.aol.com/seastar54/index.html) The vet did say the meds would make him thirsty and hungry. I sure hope he has some improvement in the next few days.

"Prednisolone"...VERY THIRSTY!!!!!!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/facelick.gif
do you have to express his bladder? It's kind
of spooky, but I'm slowly starting to get the
hang of it. I just can't figure out how to get ALL of it out like the Dr.s can!
Dr. just lowered the dose to 1/2 a day now.
