Gertie is an 18-month-old, in-between-mini-and-standard-dachsie. She has always led a very active life. About six weeks ago, she was running full-speed on the beach when she stumbled and flipped end-over-end. She seemed fine, but the next day could barely walk. The vet diagnosed a herniated disc, prescribed cortisone, pain pills, and rest. Within a week or so she seemed much better.
Gertie is back to her old self now. We've put ramps on the couch and bed, and have added a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement to her diet. I've resumed her daily walks around town and she's also been on some short hikes in the hills.
Gertie's favorite place is the beach. She loves to run off-leash there, meeting and playing with other dogs and people. I've never seen another dog as happy as she is when she gets there on a sunny day.
I'm trying to decide whether she should run and play on the beach anymore. I've researched Dachsie disc problems on the web, and I know what to do right away if she injures the disc again. What I haven't been able to find out is whether, and to what extent, her disc is likely to have "healed".
Should I curtail her beach activities for fear of a rupture? Or should I let her off-leash to run and play with the big dogs she meets there?
I'd be very grateful for any advice.
