About three years ago Bro started having back problems. The vet initially gave him a "shot" to take care of the pain, but a few days later we came home to find him dragging his hind legs on the floor. Although they had scheduled surgery for 4 days later, after searching the web, we took matters into our own hands and contacted Tuft's Veterinary Hospital in Massachusets and they urged us to get him there ASAP. They didn't want to operate that night without knowing EXACTLY where the disc problem was and so got an MRI first and operated the next day. Fortunately Bro regained movement within a few days and we kept him crated and helped him to go out etc. Within a few weeks he was back to walking (a bit wobbly at first)For months we would massage his legs a few times a day. He has made a wonderful recovery. We now have handicapped ramps off the deck and if he's home alone, we crafted a wooden frame about 3' high and the length of the couch and one for the chair, covered with upholstery material (stapled around the frame)to deter him from jumping.
It's sad to have to limit the things he want's to do, but how blessed we are to still have him with us, healthy and happy.
Dachsies just naturally bring a smile to almost everyone who see's them. How lucky we all are to own such great little dogs!

Congratulations! I´m sure your baby will be all right with time. I have at home Little Princess, who was hit by car last August and got a fractured spinal vertebra and a disc injury among other injuries. She was completely paraluzed in the beginning, but she takes now more steps every day and is still making constant progress, although slowly. But I have decided not to lose hope.

Yes...NEVER lose hope! Since September that mine got hurt, and now when she's sitting I stand her up in the back and she can stay standing for a couple of seconds. She is improving, though very slow. But I'm going to wait however long it takes!
