Hello. We have a one-year-old mini dachsie. We've had her since she was a young pup. She is pretty well housebroken, except for the occasional ghost turd. I am a stay-at-home mom so I was able to work with her consistently to get her trained. However, she has a horrible habit of peeing all over herself when she gets overly excited. She also does it when my husband scolds her. He has stopped scolding her because he has realized that he is contributing to her problem. She doesn't pee when I scold her, so I have been doing the scolding (though rare since she doesn't do many undesirable things anymore). She mainly pees when she is overly excited, like when we come home after being gone awhile. Is this something she will grow out of, or does it require extra training from me? Will getting her spade help it at all?? I am very concerned because we are in the process of buying a new house and we will also be purchasing brand new furniture. I will just die if she pees on my new sofa!! What can I do? I've been considering a Scat Mat, but we have young children, so I'm not sure that would be the best thing for us. Anyone ever dealt successfully with this?

Oh yes, one more question... Why does our female dachsie love to "hump" our male cat? This is something we laugh hysterically about... I'm just curious ;-) Thanks.

Hi I don't know much about some of your guestions because we are still learning. I just wanted you to know that my little girl jakie humps our little boy blackie (cat) all the time.
The vet said not to worry. That she just is practicing pumping and nothing can happen between them either.

I hope you get your answers and everything goes alright .

Hi Misty - I had a litle girl that had a similar problem. She was abused before she came to live with us. She eventually got over it and became a normal dachshund with an attitude. If you will adjust your settings and scroll back through the archies on this subject there are several posting regarding this problem.

The main thing to remember is that it takes patience and love. You will find some great information here.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions

Hi Misty,
This is not an unusual problem in young dogs, males as well do this when they are young.
They get so excited to see you they lose control of their bladders. They do grow out of this with time how ever. I would be cautious of having her spade too young, may be wait until she is around two. Some bitches, if spade to soon can suffer with urinary incontinence. It may help if , when you get home and know she is going to get excited, to either pick her up with out making any fuss of her and take her straight to the garden, then make a fuss of her out there. If you need to scold her, just make sure she isnt on the couch or a rug at the time. I would think that she will grow out of this before too much longer.
As for the humping, this too is completely normal. At a year old she is becoming sexually mature, and like all animals will have sexual urges, so the cat is just convinient for her !!
Once their hormones settle down, they normaly stop this, until of course they come into season.
Some spade bitches will continue with this behaviour, and even some neutered dogs will still mount other animals.
bye for now Dawn and dachsies. <img border="0" alt="[emb]" title="" src="graemlins/emb.gif" />
