My Mom lost her dachsie-mix, Heidi, today at 14 years.

My mom's other dog, Ladybug, a GSD-mix, has been suffering from seizures with increasing frequency; and it has been affecting her personality-- making her aggressive and withdrawn. She has had a few scuffles with my mom's other dog; but today a horrible thing happened. My step-dad came home and found Heidi dead from an apparent attack.

My mom is devestated and now faced with a heart-wrenching decision. She is going to the vet this afternoon to talk about either re-homing Ladybug or putting her to sleep.

Please send rays for my Mom to give her peace and healing.

I am SO sorry for your mom and stepdad!

A friend's mom had a similar thing happen - my friend and her new baby were on vacation at the beach with her mom and mom's two (adored) dogs when one of them viciously attacked the other... they think it was being protective of the baby. The law told them they had to have it put down. They thought the elderly dog (who was attacked) wouldn't live, but it did. They were devastated.

Our best wishes to your mom, and many rayz :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

I am so sorry to hear of this incident. I know it would have been so devastating to lose an old companion that way.

I hope your mother will be able to come to a good resolution for Ladybug. Has she made her decision, yet?

Did Ladybug have a brain tumor?

A decision was made today. My Mom took a half a day off from work and went to the vet's office where they'd LadyBug had been since yesterday afternoon. After consulting with the vet, it was decided that it was in Bug's best interest to put her to sleep. Mom took Bug for one last romp in the park and the shots were administered outside. The first shot was a sedetive, so she was able to relax and cuddle with my mom one last time. For the first time in several months, she was at ease; after a few moments, she was asleep, and the lethal shot was given.

It is unknown why LadyBug's seizures became so severe in the past few months. There are several ideas-- she'd had parvo as a puppy and had been previously treated for HW's, and those possibly predisposed her to problems. She had also recently started ProHeart 6, and it was suggested that it was might have been interferring with the seizure medications. After a day of observation, the vet said that he felt she was having constant headaches, and was most likely in a lot of pain.

My mom is greiving, but she is taking it rather well. She even joked that for once in our collective adult lives, I have more dogs than she does. She won't remain a three dog home for long, though. She said in a few months, when school lets out and she has more time (she's a teacher), she may get another rescue Greyhound from GALT (http://www.greyhoundadoptiontx.org/). We'll see.. and I'll keep everyone updated.

So sorry that your mom had to make that decision. But it was probably better that way. Now LadyBug is free of pain.

Connie, I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. My sympathy goes out to you and your mom. I don't think LadyBug could have passed to the bridge in a kinder way than she did. Hugs to everyone as you grieve for Heidi & LadyBug.

ps - my friends who adopted Shelby from PLDS (http://www.plds.org) also adopted their precious greyhound, Downie (http://www.greyhoundadoptiontx.org/available/downie.shtml) from GALT.

that I am sorry for the loss of Heide, but I have to commend her on the way that Ladybug passed. A last romp in the park and a sedative before her shot of peace was truly a blessing for this GSD. As a teacher myself, I think she is wise to wait for summer to train the next furkid! Julia B.
