View Full Version : Won't go outside!

Mitzi was doing so good but now since we had a ice/snow storm she won't do her business outside. Oh don't get me wrong she loves to go out but to play (sniff, eat twigs and other nasty things) but no matter how long we are out she'll come in and in about 10 - 15 mins. she'll ring her bell to go back out but then it's the same ol' routine. She'll do this about 5 - 8 times then she'll finally come in wait awhile then sneak off and go somewhere inside. What should I do? I've tried leaving her out on her chain (which she loves) but she won't go. She gets side tracked by all the smells (we've lots of bunnies and squirrels not to mention all the birds). I'm at a loss and need advise badly because it is getting so frustrating for everyone who takes her out.

A couple of quick ideas. It may be time to return to either leash or crate training. When Mitzi is inside and not supervised you have to alternatives crate her or leash her to you. This should minimize the risk of an accident and increase the odds of her doing her business in the proper location.

Good luck,

Tom

I would suggest that you take her out on her leash and "stick to your guns." Be prepared for a long wait outside.

I have heard that urinating outside yourself will help them.....maybe her Daddy could take her out and do this? Or maybe some other male relative?...of course, you could always do it....but having a rambunctious dachsie on a leash might cause you to um....get off balance?

. . . and keep using a soft command (like, "go potty") over & over while out with her. That way when she does go, there can be celebrating (and a reward for doing right if you give treats for right actions). Repeat as necessary until the old habits are back then ease off gradually. Sometimes with a Dachsie . . . it's back to square one. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Peeing out there by hoomans is your call . . . depending on neighbors etc. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

Good luck & keep us posted,
Mark

Well as for the command thing we've never stopped we still do that even with our 9 year old Emily. We always take her out with a leash on and stay out until she is done and has played a while after she goes. As for us going outside with the City Water plant right behind our house I don't think the City would appreciate it at all. Along with the police / fire station that is just around the corner nope don't think so!! But I think I'll try leashing her to me. But I know that won't go over to well with Mitzi but Emily and the Cat will love not having to worry that Mitzi is on the lose.

Oscar's Mom

I have the same problem with Oscar mostly all winter long, he will do #1 but not #2. Its quite a battle of wills I think. We do have to put him in his crate or watch him carefully when we know he needs to go. I've found that tieing him up outside is useless, he just plays then goes when he comes back in.

Peeing outside with your dog, hmmmm, that's a novel approach? I can just picture it....hubby outside peeing on a tree, and the in laws come up the driveway for a vist.

We do have problems with our little guys and gals when the weather gets nasty, don't we?
You didn't mention something that really has helped us with Baylea, we will shovel areas clean as "potty places".
Greta has never been a problem but little Baylea, hmmmm... http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/grrr.gif
It seems to help when they don't have to get their little bottoms wet.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Timber

Timber will sometimes have an accident when it is rainy outside. The best thing to do is tell Mitzi "no!" and bring her outside. If she does her business outside, tell her how good she is and give her a tasty treat. Also, keep a watchful eye on her whenever it is rainy, snowy, cold, etc.

Aug has regressed a few times. Back on the leash he goes! Talking to them helps too. "go on now, poopeedoo" is my chant to him. After a while, he'll get the message.

Mitzi is doing much better. She is very good at letting us know when she wants to go out to play and that is spilling over for when she has to "go". We decided that the back yard has way to many distractions so we've moved her to the side yard which she doesn't like cause she can't find any yummy yucky stuff to munch on while out there. But she does like to go out on her chain. Which is nice because we can see her from the windows and the front door so she is in sight all the time she is out and we can stay nice and warm when she goes outside just to play which is quite often.

PS I did shovel a spot for her but she decided she liked going in the snow even though it was up to her bum - I however didn't like getting the snow in my shoes but being the good mommy that I am I suffered just for my little sweetie.

David, "Go now, poopeedoo???????" Boy, I would give anything to see this walking in person!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

That is just too funny! Thing is, those command phrases do work!

I had to smile at the "poopeedoo" chant too! That ranks right up there with our potty song! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

We just do the "go pottie outside" thing and out the door they go.If I'm traning a youngster any mistakes and it's "NO,POTTIE OUTSIDE" then if it is a pick up item I put it outside too.The make a place in the snow is for mini's I found out when we had the 2 feet of snow in December a friend e-mailed me photos of her husband snow blowing paths in their whole yard.Glad I have Standards and Longs to boot they LOVE the snow if you are shoveling by the dog yard you have to throw the snow in their faces they LOVE IT.

Here is the latest Mitzi trick - she'll be so good for three days then around the 4th she'll go inside like she doesn't know any better. Not to sure what's going on in that head of hers. I fear I'll never figure her out. Still hanging in there though.

Hi, my Wishbone also has a problem "containing" himself when inside. He likes to go for a walk every night to "take care of his business", but if we don't take him, he poopies in my son's room. Luckily they are not to big and are easy to clean up, but it is still unacceptable. He also has a habit of peeing in front of our couch in the living room, or on the carpet in my son's room. What causes this? I don't know, I have reprimanded him, he knows when he does something wrong, he looks at me with those boo boo eyes , (you know what I'm talking about, right?). He does these things usually during the night when everyone else is asleep, I guess I am going to have to put him back in the crate if it continues, but I hate to do that. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Annie[
