I started out training Chloe and Harley on wee wee pads! BIG mistake! When I take Chloe outside she looks at me like I am crazy! Harley will pee outside and use to poop but now she will only poop in the kitchen! I have stopped putting the wee wee pads down and am trying to keep them on a schedule for going out! Chloe is now 4 motnhs old and Harley(our Basset) is 3 months! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I am hoping with consistancy and some time it will work out!

Thanks,
Shelia(Chloe's Mom)

Hi Sheila,

When we got Duck Butter it was the dead of a Michigan winter, so we started her on newspapers. When Spring came we made the papers smaller & smaller, while moving it closer and closer to the door. As it got smaller and closer to the door we started potty training 101 . . . take her out, on a schedule, saying "got potty" over & over for as long as it took . . . immediate praise (and a mini carrot for a treat if you like) is important. When we felt she was "getting it", the papers disappeared completely and we continue to take her out with the same ritual for some time. After that she always asked to go out and did it on her own most of the time. By the next winter we still had no trouble with her doing it alone and to this day she need not be accompanied.

I hope this helps,
Mark

We did the same as Mark with Augie. It is going to take a while, the more praise the better.

If they go in the house, you have to catch them in the act. They will not learn after the fact. If you find a gift in the house grin and tough it out. Yelling at them will not work after the deed is done.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip! The idea of making the paper smaller and moving it closer to the door sounds like a really good idea! With all the critters we have hear we always grin and tough it out! Our animals don't even know what the word yell means!lol They are all spoiled rotten, but, that is what they are there for! I'll let you know how things go!
