I don't need to remind you how much my "Shallow Rick" wanted a smooth, black and tan, mini, for his very first dachshund right,
but I did so I can update you on the FUR BEAST.

Gotta get an updated photo of the Ruben monster, but it's tough since we LOST the PC camera.

Anyway...

Went to the vet on Saturday...

Not only is he long hair, and who knows what color (even the vet asks, is this Ruben, and what is his coloring?) but now he's not even a mini anymore. The boy is 12 pounds 7 ounces at 10 months.

You know, if we had known this would happen, the man wouldn't have selected him, but now that he is our big, baby, boy, really we would NEVER trade him. But now I have to have THREE!! Rick says...next time, no bonding until we can at least know the pup is a smooth! Our downfall was holding Ruben at 5 days, and him suckling the man's fingers before his eyes were even open. Then over the next few weeks, that baby sniffed us, then snuggled in, with one paw always dangling. :luvlove: :luvlove: We were so taken with him!

He's the most loving dog, but dang, he still wants to be packed around like a baby each night at bedtime, and he's HEAVY! :asleep:

I'm withya sista! Pi isn't turning out to be a mini after all. She's 5 months and 11 pounds! She's going to be a standard, I'm afraid. Maybe all those jelly beans had something to do with it....

What can I say, I have yet to see a real mini in my house! Maybe if I starved them. The only way to be sure is to adopt an older dog from rescue. We do have a few black and tan smooth males! There is even a 9.5 pound mini (age 3)

I might still have an ***actual*** mini. Cassie is still awfully tiny - she is mainly a lung covered with fluff (she's surprisingly noisy for a very small dog). Angel might be a tweenie by now... she is all muscle.

Tammara... I don't think you want to trade for my mini, though - she's not a smooth, a black&tan, OR a boy  and did I mention she's noisy?:raz:

Soooooooo, does this mean we are going to get to admire a NEW PUPPY joining Ruben and Trenyce soon? :bounce:

Hey you guys don't tell me that. I am really crossing my fingers that my puppy RacZor stays small. Ok at least 10 lbs tops. But he is growing so fast. I can't get over it, plus I love being able to carry him around. He fits in my small crates and he is still to small for my doggie coats etc that I have from my first mini. HoBo was only 8 lbs of love.
Cross your fingers tiny is good for me to carry and I really want him to stay that way. But I guess no matter what size they end up we love them just as much.
Feets are crossed toes are crossed tails are crossed ears are crossed even eyes are crossed. Mine not there's.:sarcasti:

that Willow would cross the "Tweenie Line" by a bit. :D But here she is, 2 years old and still exactly the 10.5 pounds she was on her 1st birthday! I thought the little extra size might be nice. But I love her no matter what size she is. (Of course!)

When we got Pebbles she was supposed to be a mini! At 6 months she was already 11 lbs! But we didn't care, she was the best dog ever! Like Rena says the only way to really know is to adopt an older dog from rescue.

Charlie is almost a year old and the last time he was weighed - about 6 weeks ago he was 7 pounds. But now he's filled out a lot more so I would say he could even be 9 pounds now.

ok, call me ignorant, but what constitutes a mini? We were told that that is what Cricket is. I'm sure if I look in his paperwork it would say it...don't know what I did with that stuff. He weighs 11 pounds. Still a mini? I didn't know they could go from mini to standard. I guess I thought they were born one or the other. Ooohh I just noticed I graduated to "senior member"! Whoo hoo!:bounce: I guess this admin jobs leave me with time on my hands, he he he;)

a mini is supposed to be up to 11 pounds. That would leave my Trencye a mini, but not the Rube-beast.

:sarcasti:

He's such a love, that we won't part with him, but he's such a big baby to carry around all the time. He is always wanting "up." If we don't grab him, he just keeps jumping, or worse, he nips at my elbow when I'm sitting in a chair. :uh-oh: He doesn't hurt me, just pesters the daylights out of me, the whole time hubby saysing "get Mommy, make her pick you up." :thick:

The man is bugging me regularly about the "third one." Thank God they aren't the two legged kind. I'd ring his neck! This from a man who didn't want a dog at all, then decided it had to be two, now 3! I suspect that by next summer we will be getting another PUPPY from the same breeder. He's hoping to get either a full sister to Trenyce or to Ruben (who share a Dad), and she WILL be smooth b/t. (NO bonding until it's what he wants, or I'll end up with 4, and that isn't happening!) Shallow Rick has turned out to be a great Doggie Daddy, but oh he spoils them so!:flower:

So if Cricket gains another pound he is up to a Standard. Wow. Well, I don't pick him up (submissive peeing thing again) but he does sit in my lap sometimes and he is a lap full. Of course, when he does that I can't pet him or he'll wet all over me. Such a confusing thing. He won't go on me unless I touch him but he's sitting on me and won't go? I don't get it. I just learned to deal with it. He gets all of the petting outdoors where he can tinkle all he wants. Of course I have slipped a time or two in the house....it's instinct to want to touch him and I just sigh and reach for the swifter. I get jealous that the kids can touch him and stuff by I can't. But he follows me around and crawls in my lap for lovin'. I know he can't help it and it must be just as frustrating for him. Anyway, you mentioned "nipping". Well, let me tell you, Cricket does that with my TOES! And boy can it hurt. And MY hubby eggs him on! He'll tell him "go get momma's toes" and whoosh here he comes. I have to jmp on the bed to get away from him!:bounce: Such nuts!

The Submissive peeing is supposed to be the ultimate sign of respect... :sarcasti: Bart did it a lot when I first got him... he still does it some but not near as often. I think I could probably stand him not respecting me quite that much!

They're not standards until they hit 16 pounds (and it doesn't count it they're simply over weight ;)) If they are 12-15 pounds they are affectionatly termed "Tweenies"

Here is what the AKC says
Size, Proportion, Substance
Bred and shown in two sizes, standard and miniature, miniatures are not a separate classification but compete in a class division for "11 pounds and under at 12 months of age and older." Weight of the standard size is usually between 16 and 32 pounds.

Owen's a standard and is currently about 22 lbs of black and tan muscle ;)

The Dachshund Standard says Standards are "Usually" 16-32 lbs. The word usually means that MOST of the time they are between 16-32 lbs. Really anything over 11 lbs would be considered a standard though most people veiw standards as 20 lbs (Small Standard) to 28lbs.....some are 38 lbs (HUGE Standards). A woman called me looking for a show quality female. She said she couldn't show her male anymore because he was overweight and didn't think he would fit into the Open Standard class. She said she called AKC and asked them if she could show her 13.5 lb in the American Bred class and they said NO that it had to be shown in Open Standard...Shows you exactly what AKC knows. Anyway, he most definately can be shown and finished in American Bred as long as he was born in the United States.

OK, NO breeder should guarantee you what size their puppy should grow up to be IMO. You can always say, if you see the parents or you can count on the breeder being honest, that your puppy is *of miniature breeding* (which is what truly reputable breeders are actually saying when they sell young puppies) and we HOPE that it stays 11 pounds or under when it reaches maturity....just as we hope that the ones we keep for show stay under 11 pounds or under. However, if the ones we keep for show are truly beautiful and go over many of us will STILL show them because they are still dachshunds and there are still classes for them!!!! They just can NOT be shown int he OPEN MINIATURE class. They can be shown in the American Bred Class (no one should call AKC for advice - they truly are useless for most things unfortunately except for registration questions/club questions and certainly not for color questions or show questions), the age appropriate classes, the Novice class until no longer eligible and my personal favorite, Bred-by-Exhibitor class.
Back to pet puppies <G> - the oversized miniatures are truly not considered standards as many will not have the *look* of standards. There is a difference...minute as it might be.

That even though my standards are all considered small standards according to that. Is... that even though Ivy is 20 lbs and so is Con-Man, and Chewy is 27 lbs. They are all to big for me to carry around. I love my standards don't get me wrong. But I am sure hoping my puppy doesn't get to big. He is already 5.5 lbs. at 3 months. So looks like I might have a tweeny on my hands. I had hoped he would stay smaller but no matter what he weighs we will love'm either way.
Those 40 lb doxies are getting awfully big though aren't they? They could compete with the Basset Hounds almost. OK the small Bassets maybe? Just hard to see them turning around in a small tunnel for den digging. I know they can do it. Just a thought though.

There are different sizes in different countries. I thing that the USA has the biggest doxies or am I just assuming that?:book: Gotta check that out, have they gotten bigger over the past several years or have they always been up to 40 lbs. Anyone know more about it then me? :greensq:

Have 3 Sizes. Some have a Group just for Dachshunds with 9 dachshunds in the group, 3 sizes in 3 varieties. Some of them have an upper weight limit for Standard Dachshunds.
It is VERY hard to attempt judging adult weight of Minis. I have had the Runts in a litter grow to be the Largest in the litter. Dylan is one of them. He now weighs almost 14 lbs and is the largest of his litter. I believe everyone else weighs in. Rosie's litter is 8 lb 4 oz...MeMe, 7 lb 14 Oz....Toby, 8 lb 5.5 oz....Keith and 6 lb 8.5 ozs for Nookie. Some Minis grow VERY fast and Stop, others grow at a slower rate and then take off in the last few months of reaching 1 year of age. These two types can be in the same litter making educated guesses of adult weights nearly impossible. These guys are now 4 months old and I couldn't tell you if any of them will weigh in. Truffles weighs a lanky 6 lbs 14 ozs. She is very thin and I am hoping she will body up but I know this will put additional weight on her. MeMe is a bit on the "Chunky" side. Point is....you just never know!! Tanqueray is about 7.5-8 lbs, while Bacardi is a good 14 lbs. These are littermates. I believe Tanqueray will definately weigh in. I was thinking Nadia probably weighed 12-13 lbs, she weighs 11.5 lbs and is probably a little on the chunky side. She has lots of muscle and bone. I think when you add muscle and bone, you add extra weight. It is hard to get a mini with good muscle and bone to actually weigh in to the open mini class. Charity looks like she would only weigh 6-7 lbs, but she has good bone and muscle and weighs over 9 lbs. She has a hard time winning due to her small stature, yet she is very much a true mini. She also comes from Standard Breed down lines, amasing considering her size. Anyway, until they are adult size, guessing adult size is just that..... A Guess!

Sabrina is 11 lbs even at 11months old. Now her brother hit 12 lbs at 6 months old. I guess their grandma's genes kicked in as she was a standart.
