Got this problem, my 2 year old Jazmine was peeing and pooping outside. Over the months she decided not to pee outside and pees on the carpet. I have the carpet clean and now stains wont go away. This past week I smell urine when I walk in, where I didnt before. I never catch her doing it nor do I see wet spots. How can I correct this. She has a doggie door to the patio. I have a cat that has run of the house. My Bedroom is closed off. What do you suggest I do to correct this, or can it be corrected. I work 8 hrs a day.
i have a 3 year old Jazmine too, she never has gotten the house training, and in her case she had previously lived outdoors with lots of other doxies. and she does ok, most of the time, but still will go in the house. do you crate her when you are not home? if so, will she go in her crate or wait for you to let her out. there is a wealth of information here about housebreaking, choose view all topics and maybe you'll find what works for you. good luck, let us know how things go. and aslo if the odd behavior continues, have the vet make sure there is no underlying problem. shay

Thanks, no I dont crate her that never worked. She has a bed to sleep in when I am not home and only once did she pee in it. I washed it and havent found any more. (she sleeps with me).
I have taken her to the vet and she did have bladder infections and I found out that was due to anal glands that filled up. She will lick herself until she gave herself an infection. Now I have those glands clean every month. But she stills pees inside. What would you recommend for a cleaning solution that will take out the stains, if any? What can I do?
Most of the topics are for puppy training and Jazmine is two years old.
I will be awaiting your reply.
Hi TazJaz,
It sounds like something has broken the potty training habits. This does happen . . . usually if there has been a big change in the household or there has been a long string of bad weather and they aren't made to go out regardless, to do their business. A big change can be schedule, new family member, moving to a new home, new dog in the neighborhood or things like lot's of hooman stress in the house.
Whatever the reason, if it's not medical, it means back to Potty Training 101, just like a new puppy. The habit of going in the house has been extablished and has to be replaced with correct action and expectations. Dog door or not, the habit has to be there.
Taking (not putting) Jazmine out, telling her what to do while out over & over until she does, and rewarding correct actions with praise or a treat (carrots are great for this and add no pounds). Use a regular schedule based on frequency. Etc, etc. Make going out fun , sing, whatever . . . When she *gets it* . . . relearns what is expected, continue the training until she remembers nothing, but correct behavior and ease off gradually. She should begin to take herself out using the dog door.
Yes it can be corrected, but being away 8 hours a day makes it difficult to use a schedule, etc. If you have Saturday & Sunday off . . . I would start on a Friday after work to have 2 full days of the basics at the onset.
Good luck and let us know how Jazmine does,
Mark

What worked well for me were hanging bells on the door to go out. Schnitzel rings the bells to be let out. It sounds like you have a doggie door though so maybe she goes out at will anyway. Maybe it would be better to not have her use the doggie door for awhile and make more of an issue out of ringing the bell, going out to go potty, getting treats, etc. I keep him in the kitchen while at work, which works well as he will not go on hard floors. Jazmine appears to prefer carpet also.
If you are not catching her in the act, that makes it tough, but I also think it helped with Schnitzel to get very upset with him when he went in the house (which is hard, as he is the cutest thing). I think they need to know in uncertain terms when something is unacceptable--Dachshunds don't seem to have an inherent need to adjust their behavior to our wants!

I agree with Mark, its time for pottytraining 101.
I would also at least gate her into a room without carpet so clean up is easier.
As for the stains, I have yet to find an organic stain that OxiClean does not get out. I have gotten blood, vomit...etc ouf of my ivory carpet with it.
You need to be sure that with each accident you use a cleaner formulated for pet stains. These cleaners have special enzymes to remove the odor. Even if you cannot smell it your pupper might smell it and they will go there again. Anything with ammonia in it is BAD because ammonia smells like pee to a dog. I like using OxiClean, but I have also used Simple Solution and Nature's Miracle with good results. This is one place quality really counts. The cheaper stuff just does not do the job as well in my opinion.
