Booda Corn Starch Velvet chews?

Angel is a really hard chewer, and she gets bored with one thing all the time (Cassie will gnaw a corner of one rawhide for hours). I give CET rawhides under supervision, but would like to give them something without all the fat. Greenies and Dentabones she eats too quickly. Flossies also were eaten too quickly... and then thrown back up. Rope bones she will rip apart strand by strand (and eat the strands). I would prefer not to use fresh bones since they are inside/on furniture (and Angel can be very possessive so that would probably lead to fights). I have durable Nylabones all over the house and I bought her a Galileo bone, but it is so big and smooth she is having trouble holding on to it.

Has anyone had problems with these Booda chews (or heard dangerous stories about them)? I let them chew on them awhile and have now removed them. How much of one should they eat in a sitting?

Any other ideas? If I use a stuffed Kong and freeze it, does it make a mess on the floor as it melts?

Any suggestions on hard chews that dogs like are appreciated - or any info on these Booda things.:) Thank you!

My girl... awaiting her next conquest?

My doxies have gotten sick on them. They don't just chew a little, they inhale them in a short amount of time. Aggressive chewers need something stronger. I use the nylabones and the black knongs. Or else just big bones that if they get any chips etc they get tossed out then.
BTW the photo is lovely of such a pretty redhead!

those either. They eat them so fast and then get sick.

those at all..terrible ingredients and too dangerous as these can become small chunks and be so dangerous.

I'm not a fan, either. We try to stay away from corn-anything (dutch does NOT do well on it), and they are so soft that the boys as puppies just bit chunks off. AND- they're sticky and stain stuff when they're wet. :(

Nope- no Booda Velvets.

But wow- I just wanna kiss that little sweet thing right on her nose! :luvlove:

I used to use them all the time. Lucy loves them and the only ill effect she has from them is white poo! However, I now have a good source of bones and they are definitely superior and longer lasting.

No Booda Velvets here. They eat them too fast and get sick and they can also break off in big chunks and then I've had a choking incident. As Chrissie said....they also stain when they get wet. Plus the ingredients suck...not healthy. I use hoofs, but only under close supervision so if they break off a chunk I can get to it before they swallow it. My herd is so used to my sticking my hands intheir mouths to get a piece that now I can say "drop it" and they spit it out for me...if not, I go in after it.

At least they used to. Even my agressive chewer likes the bimple ones, and never had a problem with them. However, my two will chew nothing but bully sticks now. Everything else is simply ignored. I bought 10 sticks (and some flossies, but they went in a minute), then 15, yesterday I got 20 in a box (ebay).

The bully sticks can last a couple of days, wven when two dogs are chewing on one long stick. When I leave one in their pen during the day they rarely bother so it'll last several days! We toss them when they get small enough to fit IN a mouth, but have to trade or wait 'till Ruben is distracted. :D

I forgot about those Bully Sticks... maybe we will try those!

She likes her Galileo bone, but it is so HEAVY I'm afraid she is going to drop it on something breakable... e.g., the glass coffee top... my foot, etc.:caffeine:

you decide to monitor closely. Bully sticks are great but I would only give them when I can supervise as with any other chew toy. You just can't be too careful.

The only thing I leave in the crate is fully intact durable Nylabones.

nylabones can cause a problem. I've known of chunks being removed from them too! I only leave Chief with a frozen kong and I know he doesn't destroy those..he's only in it for the treats and after that..he wants no part of it!

in the crate... but I feel like I should leave SOMETHING in there, and no one here has ever taken a chunk off a Durable (Flexibles... yes). Angel is more likely to chew on one of the towels I keep in there for them to lie on.

with if there is interaction by other puppers or more likely humans as dogs are social beings.

I've always seen Booda Velvets in stores here cracked and worry about them splintering. No more Greenies bones-it's the lil' bits from now on. My boy loves Nylabone Pooch Pacifiers and both of them eat the edibles (though the fruit ones stain.) I found a fat free natural "joint formula" Green Tea Herbal chew says all natural (sweet rice flour, rice flour, wheat gluten, glycerine, water, vegetable gum, lecithin, turmeric root, olibanum, licorice, alfalfa, anise, green tea.) I don't see joint/agility ingredients in there, but they really like it. It's a skinny bone, so it doesn't last very long since it's flexible enough I can break them in half to last long enough to drive out there on my way to work and buy more. They got me trained good :D

Charlie has Greenies and Bully Sticks. But he isn't a agressive chewer.

We have to keep trying different chewies for Abbey - she's a chewing machine! She can take a chunk out of a Jumbone in just a few minutes! Dentabones don't last long with her either. We usually give her a chewie, then remove it after a few minutes. We tried a couple of hard rubber toys - not interested. We're going to try a Kong with treats when I get paid, but will watch her close. I was talking to a guy at Petsmart about it and he was stunned that she could tear up a Jumbone like that! LOL Guess with her having chewing ability like that, we don't have to worry about anyone breaking in anytime soon! :fierce:

The only chew toy we use in our house is a kong stuffed with a small amount of light velvetta cheese. Daisy is an aggressive chewer and would bite of chunks of raw hides, greenies and other such chews. She has some intestinal scarring from surgery to remove a sock she ate about 14 months ago and in October she had to have a second surgery for an obstruction because of the scarring. At the time of the second surgery they removed a piece of greenie about the size of a nickel from her stomach that did not disolve and she hadn't had one for 3 or 4 days before she got sick.
Sometimes I will freeze the kong with the cheese in and rusty and Daisy both like that too. It doesn't take much cheese smeared in the kong to make them happy so it doesn't add that many calories to their diet.

Oh..I'm SO sorry Daisy had to go through TWO surgeries! :(( However, I'm glad she is fine now. :) It's SO scary with all the chew toys and possible obstruction. You can't be TOO careful and STILL you can have problems. :( I'm with you though...I only use frozen kongs AND galileo bones (non edible) to gnaw on along with occasional bully sticks and flossies under SUPER SUPERVISION!

So glad Daisy's ok. She and Abbey sound like 2 of a kind! We'll have to give the frozen kong and cheese thing a try - she does love cheese.

I never stuffed a kong with anything other than the kong stuff'n which is kinda pricey.

I will definitely have to try cheese!

My Gretchen really loves peanut butter in her kong! She's a really skinny girl (even though she's been spayed) and the vet says occasional peanut butter is ok for her.

Peewee and Speck are fairly aggressive chewers and both love rawhide and the little rawhide twists. Greenies go incredibly fast, so we occasionally pick up the greenie bits now as a treat. We only have one puppy kong, which Speck didn't really get into until I stuffed it with natural peanut butter tonight...put a few training treats the middle. He went nuts but couldn't quite figure out how to hold it down - why I don't know as he knows how to hold his rawhide pieces. So, then I've restuffed and given the kong to Peewee who is now showing him how its done. You'd think she was an old pro at this...holding down and going to town. And Speck is really watching, so I know when we pick up another kong tomorrow afternoon, that he will have this figured out when we give them both a little treat. We have some little treats that are only like 2 calories a piece, so maybe those with just a smidge of natural peanut butter to bind them together?

Andi,

There are several things you can stuff in a Kong. I simply use Grandy's kibble, top it off with about a teaspoon of low-fat peanut butter to hold the kibble in, and stick a treat half way in the Kong as an appetizer. I only give it to her when we're gone, it's that special treat to help keep her busy and reduce anxiety.

That's what I'm wanting to use the kongs for is, once Speck has been neutured and we're able to leave him and Peewee alone together, give them some frozen kongs to keep them busy so he doesn't eat the carpet or something. :afraid: I'll try the kibble and peanut butter thing too. :D Thanks!
