View Full Version : Ivy hurt her back

This time Ivy has hurt her back. She is on total bed (crate)
rest
She decided to go after a couple of standard poodles and bark her silly head off at them> but i had just put her collar back on and she flipped herself around> not even on her back just twisted funny> i feel guilty because i should have put her on crate rest right away> just in case> (MY KEYBOARD IS STUCK ON CAPS) no it is either on or off. Sorry. Hey it worked.
Anyway the vet has her on steroids and totally crate rest. Which means I have to try not to fall when I take her outside. We only have the one step but I have a hard enough time stepping up it without holding her. We are just hoping it gets better without surgery. Because I don't have that kind of money. Plus (sorry) but I couldn't handle a dog in a walker or partially paralysed etc.

I can't believe that this has happend after all she has gone through over the past 1 1/2 months. She is going to be 10 on May 23rd. I am just hoping that she will still be here to celebrate it with us. My heart is stuck in my throat just thinking about her.
Say an extra prayer or two for my Ivy Girl!
Thanks!

I hope she recovers real fast. Perhaps you could ask your vet about accupuncture or even water therapy? Might be worth a try.

Keep us posted.

So Sorry to hear about Ivy. With the steroids and crate rest she may get better with just that...or, listen to Loren and try the water therapy or acupuncture...they really work and cost much less than surgery. Talk to your vet about it.

Mega :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: for Ivy and you and hugs to both of you as well. Keep us posted on how you're both doing.

Ivy was wagging her tail really hard this morning so I am hoping that alone is a good sign. But then we were gone almost all day yesterday. I wish I could give her some pain meds but I know that then she will do more than she should. every time we mentioned her yesterday on our drive to Madison we would both be crying. I told R. that we can't talk about it if we don't want an accident on the way down.
I was thinking the same thing about the accupuncture I know that there is a vet in Green Bay that does it. The only problem is the money right now. I pretty much have depleted any extra that I had and was already trying to get my bills paid off. My van isn't going to last to much longer. 120,000 miles on it.
To tell the truth I should be seeing my chiropractor too. My last car accident that rear ended me had to be settled because of time limits. So I did get a good settelment but my neck and back will always be a prolbem. But I had that before. Anyway enough of that P&M. I can take drugs! No I really don't but if anyone has those funny smokes. JUST KIDDING! I think I am one of the few people in my erra that didn't do that when I had the chance as a kid. LOL:raz: I just like the plain brownies! But I did have long hair. More than anyone needs to know hey.
Back to Ivy I am going to call the vet on Monday again just to see if he recommends anything else we can do for her. I'll feel better if I go give her a treat with her pill.

Go Ivy! Once she starts to feel better the "enforcing" must begin and it ain't fun. I hate it....the crying and barking and general L@@K of sadness and self-pity....Oh, I have such a hard time with that. But it needs to be done. Talk to your vet, but you don't want her to feel too good and hurt herself all over again---at least that's what my personal doc said to me about my foot. D*** him!

More :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: comin' Ivy's way!

Ivy went in to the vet yesterday and yes we did bring her home again! She does seem to be getting better very slowly. But she still crosses her back feet a bit when she walks and is a bit hunched too. But she pulled her feet back under her when tested and does seem to walk a bit better. So more meds and we are going to have an adjustment today with the chiropractor.
Thanks for all the rays and prayers. We have spent more hours crying over this little long doxie over the past couple of months. I just keep hoping she doesn't hurt herself anymore.
BYW my chiropractor wan''t to thrilled with my shoulder today. When I told him about Ivy and how she yanked at the lead and that my shoulder sort of pulled he just shook his head. He said and how long ago was this???? Hey I was to busy worrying about her to go myself. Dah, you would think I would know better and gone in right away myself. But it sure feels better sense he used a massager on it after he adjusted me. I hold my stress in my neck and shoulders. That Ivy better get better fast for my aching backs sake.

Sending rayz for both of you! I know what you mean about holding the stress in your shoulders. I hold mine in the neck and back. When Amanda had a bad spell I ended up at the chiropractor, too. My back was out of line and my neck was stiff. These little guys don't realize how their illnesses affect us.

You all are so wonderful and it helps just knowing that so many of you understand the turmoil of having your pups go through this. It just breaks your heart to know that they are in pain at all. I am just so lucky that we still have our Ivy Girl and she seems to be doing better a little each day. But she still is confined to her crate for some time though. But at least that way she is safe.
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woofs and Wags from Ivy too! The tail is working just fine these days. :flower:

Glad to hear that both you and Ivy are doing better. Sounds like you both need more crate rest for those backs and shoulders! I'm the same way, when my puppers are hurting I get headaches and the base of my skull/neck area gets inflamed. I get yelled at by my massage therapist friend (I go to her cuz she's free) because I ALWAYS wait too long....at least in her eyes.

Hope Ivy feels better and better every day and mom too. Here are some :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: to help Ivy towards a speedy recovery and hugs to you for caring soooo much!!!!!

Glad to hear both of you are doing better. Having gone many rounds with Oscar's back before it finally when out (T11-T12 & T12-T13) I know it can be very emotionally taxing. The key for both of you is prevention and ongoing "good" exercise to keep the body strong and well aligned. Did I mention I am a Physical Therapist?!?!

I've rehabbed many dachshunds including my own. Every spring I set up a pool in the yard for my dogz to build up their back and leg strength and in the winter I use the treadmill (my bath tub isn't deep enough to allow swimming). First time I put Jake in the pool he sunk right to the bottom, didn't even try to swim. So now he always wears a life jacket and just floats occassionaly moving a leg to paddle. He is so funny!!! That dog's tail could be on fire and he wouldn't even react...he's just that laid back.

It's hard to watch the dog's every movement to prevent further injury. And if they weren't all so darned spoiled it would be easier to keep them from doing the things we know they aren't supposed to do. They say that most dachshunds show radiographic signs of degenerative disk disease by the time they are 6 months of age. It's almost a given that they will at one time or another show signs of pain, discomfort, or lameness. Knowing that has really inspired me to further pursue canine rehabilitation to help others dogs (including non-dachshunds) and to approach as many veterinarians as possible.

Sending many dachshund thoughts and prayers to both of you for speedy recovery and ongoing good health.

Ivy is doing so much better but trying to keep her from jumping is another problem. I am going to get some materials to make a ramp for our one step outside the front door and the deck. But try to get her to use it. I am having to keep her on lead just to make sure she doesn't do the flying doxie leap. She thinks that now she should be able to sleep on the bed with us. Which I did let her, but told her to wait and she totally ignored me. So now I have a short lead that she can't get away with it.
We have another chiropractor appointment in the morning. The Dr was so nice he came to the vets office on his lunch break on Wednessday. It has helped tremdously and I have been massaging her back also. I wish I could take a class on how to do it for more benifit for her. But I don't know of any classes close by here.
Thanks again for all of your support and suggestions. Any suggestions on how to make a ramp for outside. I am planning on getting a step that will be level with the front door and have a board with some kind of carpeting ??? or what ever. Then I thought if I put up the Xpen so she can't just jump off the step and has to walk down the ramp it might work. Or else just board it off. I wish I was handy at carpentry, but don't have the money to get someone to do it for me. Or the money for an exspensive ramp that is pre-made.

Building a ramp is a great idea especially if the only way in or out is with stairs. My neighbor's father built one for her small dog. He used wood covered with that indoor / outdoor grass turf (grey to match her house). He made it wide enough so that there wasn't the option of going around it. I'm not a carpenter but I would think that as long as it wasn't a steep ramp it should work. You might do some internet search on building ramps that way you could get some official guidelines or specs for the amount of ramp length needed for a given height. You might even go to the DIY network website to see if they have instructions on how to build one. Where in Wisconsin are you?

My old lady pupper Miss Kai years ago needed a ramp to get onto the back porch of my old house. What I did was buy a piece of plywood wide and long enough and used some bricks to shore up the ends and the middle. (I was VERY poor then.) It worked quite well as she weighed about 65 lbs. and it held her weight. If worse comes to worst, I guess you could try that and cover it with that carpeting for traction and use a staple gun to secure it... that's what I did. She had to be taught to use it and she did fight me at first, but that was the only way to get onto the porch, she realized it and finally gave in. Stubborn! And she wasn't even a dachsie!:fierce: Make sure to measure correctly no matter which way you go or it will be ugly when it's too short or long. Very frustrating! Good luck and keep us posted.

Yeah, where in WI are you? I used to live there and miss it desperately!:crying:

too and has a few back episodes already. We went ahead and bought a ramp via ebay (I know..haven't bought a thing from ebay since :sarcasti: ) to lead up to the bed. There is NO way in **** that he would use it. We could get him to go up it but down, forget it! :crying: We do let him jump off and on the couch because we just didnt' think it was fair to "ground him" to the floor...didn't seem like much of a life! In any event to circumvent the problems with the bed is we have him on a short leader. He can only go in the bedroom if we are there and on his leader with one of us holding the leader he can't get very far and this has helped tremendously. Once in a blue moon he'll fly, but not too often.

Good luck!
