I know the difference in that in marking the dog wants to mark his territory- but how do I know whether Slinky is peeing or marking his territory?
Slinky is managing to do his business outside quite often due to our vigilance about putting him outside. However when will he be able to let us know he has to go out?

Hi Louise!
I love your questions- they make me think about my little guy's behaviors!
I'd say a certain type of inappropriate peeing is marking. Wotan will almost squat if his bladder is overfull and he's been holding. He even woke us up howling one night!
Now, he used to mark my laundry baskets if he could get to them either in the laundry room or just sitting around somewhere ready to be carted off. When I catch him peeing on something (outside now, thankgoodness) he shouldn't I give him a quick "Eeeeek!" and a "NO! WO!" right there.
You gotta catch 'em Louise. There is a difference between being desperate and tweeking out!

As for letting us know on when to go outside, At 5 months, he will stand by the dor and give us the "look". Whe still keep a wee wee pad under the table, if we are not fast enough to go let him out, he heads there. Accidents on the carpet of floor are rare now. THANK GOD!

They will bark to come in, but they just look at you when they want to go out? What kind of sense does THAT make?
As soon as I can find the bell, I am going to teach my pup to ring it to go out. I have been told to put the bell at a comfortable height for the dog, then every time you let him out (for any reason), pick up his paw & ring the bell. It is supposed to take 3 days to a week to get them to do it.
I understand this method does have possible drawbacks: some dogs just use it when they have to relieve themselves. Others use it whenever they want to go out to pee, play or sniff the breeze.

Penny's Aunt!
Are you sure your big fuzzy pup won't eat that bell?
Wotan has taken to crying to get in, to lazy to push his cat door open anymore. What a putz! It's so amazing we love them soooooo much!
