I've tried the crate method and if you ask me the people that say a puppy wont pee where it sleeps don't know what there talking about! Every person I know says it hasn't worked for them and that's like 15 people so my advice is don't waste your time thinking '' my puppy won't pee in that crate, that's where he sleeps!''

Perhaps your crate is too large?

Both of my dachsies learned very quickly with the 'crate method'. I started crate training Penny when I brought her home at 8 weeks. She chose a back corner of the crate the first couple of nights, so I bought a smaller, inexpensive travel style crate at WalMart and switched her to that one and had almost no accidents in the crate other than when she's been ill.
Maggie was just about 7 months old when we got her and despite the fact that she would happily relieve herself anywhere in the house when we first brought her home, she kept her crate quite clean. (Unfortunately she has since developed some health problems and one of the side effects is frequent urination. If I don't hear her whine to me in the night she now will sometimes soil her crate. She hates it though - she'll wad up the wet pad and push it as far into the corner as she can.)

The kitchen timer was more helpful to me than the crates I think. I set it for 2 hours and no matter what was happening, puppy and I would go outside every 2 hours from about 6 am til 10 pm. (We had to go out during the night with Penny at first, too, but I didn't set an alarm - she would fuss and wake me to go.) The trick seems to be making sure that you can praise them for relieving themselves outside, so you have to be right out there with them as often as possible!

My girls might have been easier than average to train, I don't know, but we have very few problems.

Time is also a factor. Puppies have small bladders and can't hold it very long. So, the puppy may not wish to soil his/her crate, but after a certain amount of time, they may have no choice. A small puppy cannot make it eight hours without needing to urinate.

Oscar never peed in his crate. How long are you leaving him there for? They can only hold it so long and will go if they cant wait any longer. If you are leaving him in there for a full day, like while you are at work, then yes he will pee in his crate.
