I've gone back to giving Oscar treats when he does his business outside, in hopes he'll start asking to go out when he has to go (we also do 'speak' before we walk out the door). He does hold it, just doesn't ask to to go. So, the sneaky little guy has started doing fake pee's to get a treat! He'll lift his leg but nothing comes out and he's looking at me the whole time, then he's like 'ok, were's my treat'. I wont give him one. They sure learn some things so fast, just not always what you want them to learn!

Aaaah, the sweet memories this brings back of trying to housetrain Isobel with the treat method. She did the same thing--but with a little girl it's a bit harder to notice that she's faking. I can't remember how I figured it out, but I do remember she was miffed that I did. She also would not poop. For some reason she would always hold it then do it in the house. I ended up have to matchstick her to get her to understand what I wanted her to do and where. What a joy that was! These criiters are sooo smart and rotten. Doncha love 'em?

Oh, yeah, Annie still fakes it at 3 years old (because we still give her treats). She only tries to fake out her Dad, because he gives her the treat immediately after she's peed. She realized if she kept "dipping," she'd get more treats! I'm lazy and reward her only when we get back inside, so she knows it's no use with me. Of course, this also means she thinks she always gets a treat when she enters the house (sigh).

At noon I took her for a walk around the block, which she doesn't like because the other dogs bark at her (heaven forbid!). So she tried the tack of squatting when we were only a few houses away. She pretended to pee for a long long time, giving me the L@@K the entire time. When I said "WHAT?!" she leaped back up, turned around, and tried to head back to the house! Did she think I'd forget we were on a walk?!!

Lisa---that had me laughing out loud. The longer I am with these guys the more they make me laugh. Do they stay up at night thinking of ways to fake us out?

Ownen's mom--matchsticking is when you want a dog to poop and , well you put a little vasaline on the cardboard end of a matchstick and ummm, insert it. Works like a charm. The neighbors think you're deranged, but the pup doesn't poop in your house. Unless of course, she still manages to hold it!

Well, Chester doesn't fake a pee, but he does fake "marking territory". It's usually when I walk him at our lake place, where there's lots of dogs, that he has to stop every few feet and lift his leg. Half the time nothing comes out, but I don't have the heart to tell him that. He still thinks he's the macho man, even if he is neutered. Besides, it's better than when he used to lift his leg and fall over on his side!

I'm not sure which is worse... a dog that falls over when he lifts his leg or one that doesn't ever lift a leg. Had one of the latter, told him he was sexually confused

That's a PAPER matchstick, BTW! And you don't even have to use Vasoline: just stick the non-sulfured end in your mouth to moisten it.

Yes, when the girls pee, if you want to make sure, you have to be paying attention! The mini girls are also the hardest breed to get a urine specimen from...
