We recently got a miniature Doxie. He is the cutest little guy. When i purchased him I knew what I was getting into because I had one growing up as a child and I also read to refamiliarize myself with these adorable sweethearts. so here is my problem, he does a fantastic job when it comes to pottying outside. I am actually quite surprised. However, when it is raining he will not go outside and makes a mad dash to the door hoping to get in. The last thing on is mind is going potty. Any suggestions on how to get him to accept the rain and wet grass? After all we live in the Pacific Northwest where it can rain quite a bit.

Congratulations on your new pup! I was laughing when I read your subject line, because this is SO predictable. Most dachshunds seem to hate rain; I remember one person posted that her pup screamed as if he were in pain when he go rained on!
My Annie doesn't like the rain either. I don't really have any answers for you, beyond letting him know he has no choice but to go outside (take him out on the leash, which means you have to get wet yourself!) and giving him a nice treat when he does the right thing.
Perhaps your dachsie should start a support group for dachsies living (and peeingin the rain) in the Pacific Northwest!

These must be smooths. Our Standard Longs will sit in the snow even if there is a Blizzard. And rain you say,HA Out the door they go I have one that will chase leaves if the wind blows, she must go out who cares what it is doing out there.Michigan weather is FUN for my guys.

I think all longs will sit/play/run in the rain or snow. mine LOVE it. never seem to notice that there is precipitation... my smooth bitch won't go out to potty in the rain, but she sure will go hunt a bunny in the rain, or any other foul weather.

congrats on your new pup! My smooth mini girls do not like to get their feet wet, they do go out in the rain, but i have to keep the umbrella over them. Our wire hair doxie mix boy (we are hoping to finalize his adoption this week) loves water and the rain, he doesn't worry about staying under the umbrella with the girls at all. He even likes to catch the raindrops!! The girls hate a bath and he loves it. Funny how they are all so different. Shay

I have a mini too and he hates rain as well but I don't think there is anything to do about it mine is an adult and when he goes out he gets his underside wet. They get better as they get older! Luckily! How old is he if he is real young it might be because its something new. Good luck with your pup!

Our two smooth tweenies love rain and snow.
Of course, we do a lot of activities in water. We have taken the boys canoeing, swimming, and hiking in the snow.
A couple of weeks ago I had them traipsing down a creek with me (okay, Bart was a little reluctant about accompanying us on that trip. But, he was a good look out for any bugs or snakes <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm27.gif" border=0> )

I have 2 doxies....my standard is very stubborn and will not go out in the rain..even if its sprinkling. If you carry him out he will just stand there. So I dont even take him out when its raining. My little guy is scared to death of thunder (and my cat..he is such a baby) but if its pooring he will merrily run out the door. He could care less about the rain, its just thunder he doesnt like. Both are longhairs so I have no logical explanation except that some like water and some dont.

Chaucer likes snow, but HATES rain. Riddle me that. He won't go NEAR a swimming pool, or any other form of water.
Gidget won't put her butt near the ground if there is ANYTHING out of the ordinary; however, she will swim in a swimming pool.
Herman doesn't seem to care too much about rain, he's the "hurry up and do business and get back t playing" type...
Still, we have more accidents in bad weather than in good...
