Had hard time finding a nice hotel in Indianapolis that would allow pets. We are going there for mini roundup this year which is held in Columbus, IN. Decided to make it a family trip and dh needs Internet access for work, so hotels in Columbus couldn't fit the bill. I called how many and even exensive ones. We did get a room in Westin downtown there.

Always call ahead and make sure the hotel/motel actually does accept pets... even if a chain says it does one of it's individual units may not. We ran into that problem driving from Texas to Fl. last year. Got to Mobile the first day and the hotel I had selected because they said they allowed pets had a big sign saying NO PETS. .. as did just about every hotel on that exit except for Motel 6 which would not be my first choice for accomodations but at that point we had no choice.

If you have a pet, the motel might want to put you in a smoking room. I ran into this when I was calling around for my trip last month. In addition, many of these "pet-friendly'' chains require non-refundable pet deposits -- anywhere from $25 to $100!

So, yes, always best to call first and ask questions.

Does anyone have a AAA membership? I need a book with the hotels listed so that I can call during my trip next month.

If you get driving directions from mapblast (http://www.mapblast.com/(co2vczmg2tzud155tgijnq45)/Home.aspx) or Mapquest (http://www.mapquest.com/)
you can get a list of hotels along the way. Expedia or Yahoo maps can probably give you that information as well. I like MapBlast myself.

I did find on my last trip that LaQuinta and some Best Westerns seem to allow pets in a lot of their units. Though, make sure you call the one you are planning to stay.
