Miss Madders is up to her old tricks again. That is peeing on the floor....especially when we're looking
and pooping too. Any advice on RE-training a 2 almost 3 year old? I'm sure we will be ditching my
pretty blue rug in the middle of my living room soon cuz even after cleaning it, it is speckled in brown
and green and yellow. Any advice? This is what I came up with, what do ya'll think. Since it seems to
be the moisture that she doesn't like, should I go the puppy pad route? I was thinking of putting one
or two down right by the glass door. Would this be admitting defeat and another thing she could
brag to her doxie pals about how she's got her mommy trained? I'm at my wits end. I don't think it's
a bladder infection cuz she can hold it all day and then as soon as we come home, she smiles and
lets loose....arrrrgh! It's a good thing she's sooooo darn cute. Another option, I guess would be to
crate her or put her in an X-pen for the day. Is this a good idea? Amy, I know Owee has an X-pen.
Does he seem okay with that (except for the times he escaped...heee hee)? Maybe she needs a
good doggy shrink.
Pulling my hair out heah!!!

A few questions for you. Have you had the dog for long? Do you give run of the house? Do you clean up the mess with a product called Nilodor or something without ammonia? I've only had a doxie for approximately 2 months. I was told to not give run of the house until completely obedient. He doesn't know the "come" command, so no run of the house yet. He has access to only 1 room now so we can always keep an eye on him. We do crate him when we can't keep an eye on him. It seems that dogs do not like to go where they sleep or when they are in a confined area. Can you blame them? He has only had one accident and this was the first week we had him and let him run through the apt. Since then..he hasn't made a mistake yet...I'm holding my breath since it's only been 2 months. Hope this helps.

I have read that when you need to re-train, you have to start back at square 1. I'm far from an expert when it comes to this subject. Oscar will not ask to go out, so when we cant watch him he has to be in the kitchen, but he does hold it all day when we are not home. When we are home some days he's good and will hold it till I take him out, other days I feel like its a pee festival!

You should be using the crate or x-pen during the day especially if she is having accidents. IF confined to the crate she will most likely hold it till you get home. If she has the run of an x-pen she may make messes inside the pen outside of her crate or bed. Have you tried Nature's Miracle to try and remove the stains from your carpet?
Good luck,

Well, I know you use Natures Miracle, but are you using enough of the product?
I Love my x-pen and would reccommend them to anyone with smaller dogs. Rudy and Roscoe stay in the x-pen when I'm not home and during the nights now. (They have recently been banned from sleeping in the big bed due to Rudy's tendency to vomit during the night -about once a month.) They have room for a bed, toys, and food and water dishes, but they are SAFE and so is my house. I set it up on the tile so if there is an accident, its fairly easy to clean up.
I don't think puppy pads admit failure, but are you prepared for the expense and mess that comes with them? The main reason I will not paper train is that I don't want my house to smell like a dog's bathroom. ( I also don't want to worry about them peeing on paper they shouldn't pee on http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif .)
Is a doggie -door a possibility?
If she does not like rain, is there a place she can relieve herself outside, and still stay dry -like under a patio awning?
I don't really have any true advice as I have seen no regression. Rudy has not had an accident since he was 7 mos old -took about 2 mos to train him, and Roscoe has been accident -free for about a month now!!! My only method of training was crating/x-penning and keeping a schedule which took about 2 months for each boy - Roscoe actually took a little less.
Good Luck!

Beanie has gone in and out of being fully trained for some time. He became most consistent when I started crate training. We had an older dachsie who was fine alone with full run of the house. So we crated Beanie, and not Hans. But, Hans would whine to be with Beanie, so now they both use the crate and live happily ever after. We now have minimal accidents.
I had tried the wee wee pads and the dogs tore them to pieces, with or without pee on them. It was disgusting. Sometimes He would go on the edge and it would run onto the floor anyway. It even got in the crack of our stairs, and I could not get the smell out. Luckily we moved right after that.
One thing about Nature's Miracle-you have to be sure you cover the spot thouroughly. The little enzyme things only 'eat' what they touch. Does that make sense?
Hope this helps.

Just a note on the natures miracle, for bad spots pour it on and leave it wet. I had a spot on our NEW rug when Oscar was sick, I soaked the area and the next day the spot was gone, it just takes a day or 2 for the spot to dry.

We've been houstraining a 2 1/2 year dachsie that was an outside dog at her previous home and was not housetrained. We were having a time teaching her until we (thanks to the advice on this board), kept her on a leash with us whenever she was out of the crate (even in the house). We also started giving her treats whenever she went outside. I also started feeding her on her favorite pee spots. Within several days, there was a marked improvement. And now we are down to about 1 accident a week instead of 3-4 a day. I think that the keeping her either in her crate or on a leash (even when in the house) was the main thing that helped.

Hi Sandi,
Duck Butter did the same thing a few years ago. We went right back to basics - scheduled trips out and crating when we're gone. She picked it back up pretty quick and she was, once again, back to having the run of the house in no time.
We never did figure out why that happened!

You've gotten some good advice. I would also reward her when she pees outside with her absolute favoritest treat. This got Annie's attention MUCH better than anything else! <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm34.gif" border=0>

I am just wondering about one thing: EXACTLY what do you do when Maddie has an "accident"? What is your procedure from the flood on? What do you say? What do you do?

Here's our method....
IF WE CATCH HER RED PAWED....I point her in the direction of the puddle/pile and point my finger at it and say NO! NO!! NO!!! If I see the puddle/pile but didn't see her do it, I just clean it up and ignore her like it didn't happen. If I can catch her in mid-squat, I pick her up and take her outside in a hurry and encourage a POTTY with LOADS of praise if she even tinkles a little. One thing I'm REALLY thankful for....LAMINATE FLOOR in most of the house. Easy clean up.

Hi Sandi,
My only concern about the method you described (this happened to us with Masse) is the "If I can catch her in mid-squat, I pick her up and take her outside in a hurry". We did that until we realized she had trained us. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif
It was as though one day she thought, "let me get this straight . . . I squat if I want one of the hoomans to carry me outside. Cool, that sounds like fun!" After we realized that was happening . . . when we caught her in mid-squat we shouted "WAIT" to get her attention and then coaxed her to the door and out. There were still a few mistakes, but it worked.
