I think with time and training, it can be done just as easily (or difficult!) as training a puppy to go outside. Purina (I think) has a specially designed litter box and litter made just for dogs. The box comes in 3 sizes. It's called Second Nature. You should be able to find it in Petsmart or Petco.
Good luck!

Just a word of advie if you try this - forget the doggy litter! The dog litter is made of recylced newspaper formed into compressed pellets - which are just the right size for a dachsie to play with, pick up and toss around the house, and eat. We tried the litter and our youngest had a blast with it.

I would suggest placing newspaper in the litter box instead. Also, if you buy a dog litter box, place a weight in the back. Otherwise, they sometimes tip up when the dog steps in (which is not condusive to happy training).

We tried it. The litter box now makes a nice additional dog bed with blankets and a pillow in it to make it all comfy.

Good luck!

I do not have any experience with doggie litter, but i would think my dogs would love to play with pellets of newspaper!! I am glad to hear that you are considering bringing a new furkid into your life, i'm sure that will help your healing process. I hope you are feeling better as I know how things have been so hard for you. Wishing you the best and let us know when your new baby arrives. Shay

I just bought a litter pan and pellets for my new rescue doxie who is approx. 1 yr old. She came fully housebroken(yeay!) but I would like her to have the option to also go inside on rainy days or if I am gone more than a couple of hours. I have the litter box set up in my utility room, which has a concrete floor, and she can get there through a doggie door in the kitchen door. So I feel (hope) it is removed enough from the rest of the house that she won't think it's also OK to go IN the house.

I have been working with her only a few days. So far, she has not gone in there. At first, she almost acted like I was tricking her to go into a crate and she was reluctant to go in. So I have been giving her a treat for just walking in and standing there so now she's happily doing that. I spray with pellets with that puppy spray that is supposed to help puppies to go. And I tell her "go potty" in the same voice I tell her when she goes outside.

The pellets look to me like they would be uncomfortable to walk on. (she hasn't tried to play with them). So I am considering just getting newspapers and puppy pads to put in there. I am hoping she will learn to go in there before winter hits. I can see it will take a lot of patience and determination but it will be nice for her to have the option of going inside too. Good luck with your new pup. I would really like to hear how you both do with the system!

<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm3.gif" border=0>Hi!

When I had my big Iguana, I kept him in rabbit food- literally. I caught him eating his substrate and worried it might be really bad for him, so I switched to alfafa pettets. At least he didn't get sick or plugged up and it had a vitamin advantage.
You can get 40-50 lb bags cheap at a feed store and the dachsie might be pursuaded to go into it... <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm12.gif" border=0>

I have my 4 mon. dachsie pup, Dementia, trained to go on wee-wee pads by the door in the kitchen when she's out and I can't open the door for her. It has helped that the other dogs have shown her the "light" and she "mostly" goes out in the yard now.

I haven't reached the next step of getting her to give up the pads yet- but she's still young!<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm38.gif" border=0>

well im happy to report that our new addition a female 12 wk old dapple doxie is doing fine. crate training going very well and schedule very well and little if no accidents, but constant attention. i did not seek further in to the litter box thing as she likes to go rite outside close to the garage door and we put the wee pads there to temp her and when it is raining, likes its been, she does her duty there. first nite was ruff (no punn in tended) and CHEWY (named not because shes chewing) is doing great. thanks to everyones support regarding the death last month of my other doxie.
