View Full Version : Where does your dog go 'Potty'?

I was thinking about this the other day. We have a huge dilemma right now with Charlie. We are in a Two Storey home with a Walk Out Basement. Therefore, in order for Charlie to go in the Backyard we must take him down our deck stairs. He can go up them but not down. It's been a huge problem in the winter so we unfortunately started letting him go on our 'Deck' when it was severly cold here this winter.

We were thinking of building a ramp from the steps all the way down with little slats so he won't slip. It's quite a big job because there are about 12 stairs. But we really want him to go in the backyard. Then of course we'd add a doggie door.

Where do yours do their business???

Ours go outside the doggie doors to the back yard.
Now if they would only go in one place that would make poo poo duty so much easier, instead of having to search. LOL

We live in a townhouse development. Harley has 2 different spots where he goes potty.

Right outside the fence he will pee. The grass is lush and green there. LOL

When he needs to poo he goes out back under a big evergreen tree where there is no grass and only dirt.

For 4 months old he's got a good pattern down.

We have two options. During the winter it's papers or an area in the garage with papers. In the warm season we walk them in a special area where they go. We have no fenced yard and living in the country we cannot let them run free. We plan to built a run and doggie door next year so this will give them a fenced area to run. That will save time!

Buddy uses a small area to the side of our house. He is getting pretty good about holding it till he gets there as well. He knows that is HIS area. Yesterday he held in pee for about 10 mins while I talked to the mail lady, then went like a race horse once we got over there. We clean everything up as he does it, the majority of the time.

We have kids, I don't want poop all over the lawn. We do plan on putting in an electric fence (we are not allowed traditional fencing in our neighborhood) so he can run around while the kids and I are outside, but I will still continue to take him to his area when I take him out to go potty.

In the winter time, we did end up letting him go on the deck a few times when the weather was truly cruddy. But most of the time, rain, snow or sunshine, we take him to his area. I even bought a cheap electric snowblower this winter to use to clear his spot since I can't drag hubby's big monster over to that side of the house.

I could only choose one...but Penny goes in a litterbox during the night and outside (in the backyard) during the day. She's fine with it and that way, whenever we go anywayer she just goes outside.

Love that litter box.

Ruben and Trenyce use it faithfully. When we aren't home, it's in their huge basement pen with them. When we are home, it's in the kitchen. When the addition is finished, I'm going to try to move the box into the spare bathroom, so it's out of the way when company comes, but it's not like it smells. We clean poop every time, and scoop the used litter a few times each day.

They both potty outside when they are outside, although sometimes Ruben forgets that he can, so he holds it. When he gets inside he pees a lake in the box. You can just picture him saying "whew, I really had to go" I think he just doesn't like to stop playing. :sarcasti:

Since I could only choose one...Everyone does go outside, but Isobel does use pee pee pads when in the house as she has totally regressed and hoomom has given up.:sarcasti: She's been tested for everything under the sun and she's healthy as could be, but she's lazy and rotten:devil: and so I buy the pads in bulk....human size and 50 to a pack.

The Back yard is fenced so they mostly go there. They have a litter box that they can use during the day. I'm pretty sure Merry is the only one that uses it though.

I should say "any damn place they want."

It has been raining SOOOO MUCH! We are drowning here. I let the pups out almost the minute the raindrops SLOWED DOWN. I've even left them out for a few minutes in the rain, just to let them play outside, but this LONG weekend was ARGH! 2 pee spots on the bed, several on the carpet and if you read the MONSTER CHILD thread, we even had two on the floor right next to the litter box. Can you say "Cabin Fever?" I wanted to strangle them, but I rarely caught them. Funny thing (NOT) they always used the litter box, while in their pen in the basement.

Where's the box for, "Wherever she damn well pleases"?

HA!

j/k. Housebreaking is proving challenging, but I know we'll get there.

I'm trying to get her to go outside although someone suggested putting a litter box behind her bed in her crate . . .

I had to check "other" because he goes in the back yard, front yard, side yard, neighbor's yard, inside on paper...and if it's morning & I am not quick enough, I am given a gift...very wet one. All in all, he prefers the outdoors & is real good about going there. :)

Since we're in the city, she goes on her walk. But, she prefers to do her business on grass or dirt. She loves when we go to CT to see the grand-hoomom! Lots of grass and dirt there.

Piper goes when she needs to, just about anywhere. She had a tough time going potty on the pee pad in the airport, like "but mommy! We're INSIDE!". But she eventually went.

Dred has an allergy to grass, so he goes in the dirt in the flower bed, oh yea for me for clean up.

Cookie is really good about doing #2 outside. When it comes to peepee, she will occasionally go outside, but seems to prefer going on paper in the bathroom. I tried a litter box - that lasted about 15 seconds! She started digging and the litter flew all over. Paper is easier. :)

My townhome only has a front yard. out back is a common area but the only door we have is into my enclosed (fenced) front yard. They also sometimes go when we take walks and being the little trouble makers they are they have also been know to go inside but not on any pee pads or papers:devil: .

I chose other because Taffy goes out in the backyard when we are home, on walks when we can find a safe area....and she happily went on the trail at the dog park area. If we are out shopping, most shopping center have some grassy areas, and she will use that.

That's why they invented plastic bags and paper towels, right?

Since we live in an apartment, LB has some of that "Outdoor" carpeting that he pottys on. We replace it every month. We get 8X10 foot sections at Home Depot for 10 dollars.

They both go in a designated area in the yard. During hard rains or storms - they will use a pee pad.

I like the idea of either or because when we are in hurricane season - outside is not an option.

we live in an apartment at the moment so we don't have a back or front yard of our own. he just goes wherever smells right to him. he sure does take his time at it sometimes. it has to be like the PERFECT spot but sometimes he's like "oooooooooooh gotta pee now, don't care where it is, must relieve myself."

Manny goes in the garage on pads or in his x-pen with a litter box with pads and of course when he is out on his walks. He just turned 7 mos. and he is finally letting me know when he needs to go out to potty:party6:

Well Boggie goes outside and pretty much only outside, unless we're gone all day but i've seen two accidents. My mom was on top of the potty traning bit, now its my turn. Gabe is only 11 wks so we're working on it. Going #1 outside is no problem but the other well it'll get there.

Well, I'm working very hard to only go "hurry" in a special pen that my mom has set up in our backyard..........but sometimes I get to playing and don't think about it until it's too late, or when mommy is working so hard on that puter thingy that she doesn't notice my stares. She is working on teaching me to use a thingy that makes a funny ringing sound when I stomp it with my feet or jab it with my nose, since I don't bark and only make tiny whimpers. I haven't quite got the hang of the ringing thing yet, but I will. Of course between you and I.........I had it down within about 30 minutes but mommy uses treats to help teach and I REALLY like the treats soooooo............ it may be awhile before I don't need those teaching lessons. <G> When I do have an accident though I try to be considerate and find one of those rug thingys in the bathrooms or by the backdoor.

Now that it's so dark when I get up and get home, it's mostly in the backyard, and I pick it up on the weekends. My granddaughter and I call it mining. I can't find it when they do it because I'm taking them out in the dark, both morning and night.

They do go on their walk to the park on the weekends, or my day off. I always have my doggy poop bags at the ready.

We have the same exact situation at our house. I'm carrying a pupper up and down at least one and sometimes two (depending which level we're on) flights of stairs. When we got him at 10 weeks, I made a lot of trips:D; but, now that he's 4 1/2 months, we don't have to widdle quite as often. But, we wanted him trained to the backyard and the exercise is great.

These things change...
With the new one, she was already using the litter box, but has changed her mind. Now she uses whatever rug is close for pee or the middle of the floor for poop! Mind you, she never lets us catch her. And so much for the "they go so many minutes after eating", or "upon waking"-not this one. She potties whenever. We could ring her little neck right now. :eekdevil:
The good news is, now that she has a sibling, Trenyce is pooping in the box again, and peeing outside! Go figure!:faint:

Mine are both very good at going right out front. We live in a townhouse and to take them out back is a serious trek around the building and I can't be gone that long when the little ones are in bed.
Tuck will jump against the couch or chair or wherever I'm sitting and bounce backwards with a little bark when he has to go. It's the only time he ever does that. He came up with the signal on his own and we promptly get him outside.
Buff will just sit at my feet and bark. Sometimes it means potty, sometimes cookie, sometimes she wants to play but we assume potty first. If I'm wrong she just sits her pretty little self in the yard and gives me the look.

We potty in the front yard, since we live in a duplex, and the front yard is ours, the back yard is for the girls on the other side of the house. (The house is split back/front instead of side/side like duplexes usually are) And when we leave, Dragon pottys in the kitchen on pads.

Pee pads and grass.
I'm at a house now, but that's temporarily. Normally when I'm living in an apartment, I have a grass box that I made and buy new sod about 1x a month (sometimes longer  ) And Cocoa pees on that no problem! Mousse...well, we haven't had the grass box since we got him since we're at a house now. So when we move, we'll have to teach him what its for

Mocha tends to go on the grass that's right in front of the concrete, but when she wants privacy she goes to the other end of the yard that can't be seen if you're indoors.

Since we're on a sailboat and not always at dock where we can go ashore, Sailor has learned to go in the head (bathroom). There is a shower in the head so after he goes (#1) we just wash it down. When (#2) comes along, we just pick it up and put it in the toilet.

When I take him to work with me, he likes to go outside in the back of the building in the same spot on the grass.

However, when we go on walks, it's a free for all.... whenever, where ever. Even in the middle of the sidewalk he'll just stop and poop or pee.

Some people on boats, have their dog do their business on the foredeck and then they hose it off. (To me it's too messy and gross). Besides when we're in heavy seas... my baby would fall off just trying to go to the bathroom!

I read once of this dog who's owners did not train him to go in one spot on the boat so he took it upon himself. He would jump off the boat, find his "spot" in the water and go. Then the owners would stop the boat and he would swim to them and get back on..... strange..... Smart dog, dumb owners! Especially when he was a black lab. He jumped off at night one time drifted away with the waves and the owners didn't even know he wasn't on board the next morning when they took off.... IDIOTS!!!! A fellow sailor found the dog and alerted the Coast Guard. They tracked down the owners and they got a hefty fine and some other things from the ASPCA.

That's a GREAT idea! Especially when it's raining hard, or icy and my crew don't want to get on the real grass!

Rob Low goes in one of two places: during the day, I will walk him down the alley next to our apartment and he will relieve himself there. The downside of this is that every dog in the neighborhood goes down the same alley and a lot of the owners (usually of big dogs) don't clean up their dog's poop, so as you can imagine, the alley is disgusting and filled with fleas and feces. Also, since we live in a very urban enviroment it is definitely not a safe place for me to take him should nature call him in the middle of the night. The other place he likes to go is on coir doormats, which is something I discovered by accident. Obviously, I don't want him to pee on our doormat and then to track it into the house, so I have a nasty old Christmas one he uses next to the "real" one that we are using.

I realize how tacky and gross that looks and one of the problems that this had caused is that, whenever he sees a coir doormat (which 95% of people have) he thinks, "Oh, goody...the men's room!" This is particularly mortifying when visiting friends. Also, I cannot imagine what company would think if they knew what that raggedy, blackened doormat was REALLY used for.

Anyway, I went online this past weekend and ordered the "Pup-head", which is a small plot of fake grass that has a pan underneath for drainage that was originally made for people who have dogs to put on their boats. I am planning to put some pee-pads in the drainage compartment underneath to make clean up a little less messy. I had also considered the uber-expensive Pet-a-Potty but it is raised up a good 6 or 7 inches and the Pup-Head is only elevated about an inch or 2. Being a dachsie, he is extremely low and anything that is too high would be bad for his back. Also, the fact that the Pup-Head will be in the exact same location as his current nasty Christmas mat and is nearly level to the ground will also help him to get used to using it. Not to mention that it is less than half the price of the Pet-a-Potty!

Cody uses the backyard - although we bring scoop bags with on walks just in case.
Does anybody else use the Doggie Dooley waste system? It's been working really well for us, although I'm not sure how well it will work in winter and I'd love to hear from somebody else who has used it for longer than us.

I said "Other" as we are a multiple dog household, with multiple answers.

Newest adoptee, Pogo, was an indoor dog before I adopted him. Pee pads all the way for this boy. He will NOT pee on grass and will hold it until he gets to papers. He almost :faint: the first time he saw Valentin pee outside. The shocked look on his face was truly comical, (NO, no pictures, 2 hands, 2 leashes, no camera)

Valentin: Outside, anywhere, will use pee pads indoors, will use carpet if he can get away with it.
