How do you train a dachsie to go poopies outside?
For those of you who have been reading the adoption/rescue threads, you know that we took in a dachsie last weekend. His name is Oscar and his new home will be with my husband's mother.
When we first picked up Oscar, he had diarrhea. We thankfully got the diarrhea stopped, but once Oscar started going again, he has been going in the house.
Now, Oscar has NO trouble whatsoever peeing outside. If we take him out 10 times at night, he'll pee at least a little each and every time. He's GREAT with that. But he doesn't seem like he wants to poop outside.
Last night we took him out 4 times...gave him plenty of opportunity, but as soon as we turned our back, he pooped on the carpet.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I help him get the idea?
Thanks
Karen

I know that some folks will think that this is crazy, but it seems to work with my girls. I pick up the mess in a paper towel and carry it and the puppy outside and put it down where the puppy can see it. Then I just make sure that the next poop is outside and give lots of praise. After that, any poops get carried out in a similar matter to where I want the puppy to go and the spot inside is cleaned and treated to remove the scent. Rena

Hi Karen, glad to hear that at least #2 is solid now. My Beanie oftentimes will do the same thing. No idea why, but what we started doing was using a command word when he eliminates and just saying it over and over until he does both 1 and 2. When he does, he gets a treat outside, literaly as soon as he is done squatting so he knows this is good behavior. Sometimes it takes him 10 minutes to find a spot. Maybe you need to confine him to where you are in the house. I know this can be a pain sometimes, but it will be the only way to stop him going into another room and pooping.
Also, if you catch oscar in the act, so NO and take him outside immeadiately so he knows he should have gone outside, eventhough he is already done.
Good luck.

Karen, I've been following your thread and the Adoption board and am so happy things are improving.
We got Betty when she was 2 year and she was an outside dog. Housetraining her was not as easy as I had hoped it would be.
Here is what worked for us (thanks to the advice on this board):
Keep him either in a confined area or on a leash even inside the house. Take him outside alot. Whenever he poops outside give him a special treat. Cheese worked for Betty. Although it is a pain to walk around with the dog on a leash all of the time, this worked very very quickly for us and very effectively. It only took 3-5 days of having her on a leash and then we were able to let her off the leash, but just make sure that she was in our site at all time. She is like Oscar and won't mess in front of you. The other thing we did was to start feeding her in her favorite poop spots. I think that helped also.
Now, 6weeks later, she hasn't had an accident in weeks and she can have free run of the house when we are home because she won't run off into another room and mess.
