Has anyone else tried the doggie litter boxes? We bought one to have as a back up for when the snow is 3 feet deep and little dachshunds with 3 inch legs don't want to go outside. However, Henry and Jake don't seem to be very interested in it.

We bought the standard size so that it would be extra long. I was afraid that when they used it, we would end up with a little dachshund bum hanging out. However, they don't want to use it. We had to weigh down the back so that it wouldn't flip when they stepped in it.

We tried the doggie litter (compressed pellets of recycled newspaper), but Jake was more interested in carting it all over the house and playing with it.

Just curious as to whether anyone else has tried this or not, and if so, if you have had any luck...I guess we are stuck with carrying them to a spot with less snow again this winter.

I have one of those litter boxes. Your right about the litter, Oscar just brought it all over the house and ate it. I didnt have any luck with the box but with the weather getting cold I am going to try it again.

Just a thought but maybe instead of the pellets you might try the potty papers in it. That is what I am going to do since Mitzi is way to short to wade through the 6 inch snow we got last night. I put in down not realizing it was so deep and it swallowed her up. I had to dig her out. She was snorting and sneezing cause it went up her nose! Poor baby.

We have a "litter box" for our three doxies. My husband made it. It's 2'x4' and about 2 inches high. He made it out of plywood then painted it with epoxy to waterproof it. I lay an old bath towel down in it, then several layers of newspaper and a puppy pad, if needed, to train the dogs to use it. This has been very successful for us. We are gone all day and our three doxies are gated in the kitchen. They have never had an accident outside of their litter box. Well, our newest, Misty, who is a rescue doxie and only 7 months old, sometimes finds its easier to just take a squat in the living room. But if she is gated in the kitchen with Willy and Alex, she always uses the litter box.

We are having rain/snow/sleet since last night. So, I pulled out the litter box, I just put newspaper in it. When its wet out Oscar will not go outside. This morning I kept an eye on him and when he started to go in the kitchen, I picked him up (without saying anything) and put him in the box and praise him for being in there and told him to do his business. But he just froze there and wouldn't go but he no problem with going on the kitchen floor! This is only Day1, so I hope he gets the idea after a few days. Any other ideas?

I received an e-mail from someone the other day who has a dachsie that uses a litter box. They brought him home at 14-weeks of age and tried the paper-training route. He preferred playing with the paper to doing his business on it so, after three days of this, they decided to try a small box with cat litter in it. They wiped up some pee with a paper towel and put that under the litter and then let him smell it. From that day on, the pup used the litter box on his own. They eventually bought a kitty box that was longer and not as high as most litter boxes are. When he was little he'd hop in the box, do his business, cover it up like a cat does and get out. Now that he's full grown, he stands to the outside of the box, lifts his leg and pees. If he has a bowel movement, he turns and backs up to the box and squats over it and goes.
