View Full Version : Is it easy or hard to pick up your pups?

I have three little dogs and each of them have their own style of allowing me to pick them up.

Juney helps me to pick her up.

Bunny gets stiff as a board, which makes her heavier.

I can't get a grip on Trixie, she just goes boneless, and slides right out of my hands and it takes a couple of minutes to finally get her in my arms.

When Cooler was still here, he would get so excited that he would almost fall out of my arms.

I've had other dogs that would just be relaxed, no big deal.

You are allowed multiple choices.

Rusty about jumps in my arms and then rests his front paws on my shoulder
Daisy sits still so I can pick her up and then usually cuddles up around my neck.
Sometimes I pick them up and they want to stretch out feet up in the air arms like a baby, especially Daisy.:flower:

be picked up! :) Sometimes he'll even try and jump up to tell you to pick him up!

It all depends on his mood. Sometimes he wants to be picked up and will practically jump into my arms. Other times he wants to run and play. These are the times when he turns into a squiggly little worm thats hard to get.

When he wants to get off the couch or the bed he will tell us with a little cry. Our arms just kinda guide him down.

Cricket has that submissive peeing thing so we try not to pick him up...the few times I have, he has been a wiggle worm. Bella seems to cower in a ball as you go to pick her up (don't know what that is all about) but once you scoop her in your arms, she is absolutely comfortable! Then Cricket gets jealous and we have to put her down and sit on the floor and let them both kiss us to death!:D

First off because I have back problems it is hard most of the time. That is why I am going to mini doxies. But Zor is already 9lbs.
Chewy is dead weight at 28 lbs. Con isn't very flexible at first. Ivy is only 20 lbs. but she feels heavier. Zor is such a squimer that unless you hold him for a couple of minuets and then he settles down. People at the dog park always want to pick up the puppy. Most of the time they put him down fast. Those long doxie bodies are hard to hold if your not used to it.
BUT when kids want to hold Zor I make them sit down! It is the only way to be safe. A couple of kids have picked him up at the bark park without asking first. One dropped him but he was OK. The mom yelled at her son for not asking first.  I was not a happy Homommy at that time. I could have bit the kid myself!:cussing: OK I only did a little cussing to myself.:fierce:

I bend over and put my hands in position - right one like a basket for her rib cage - left one ready for her tushie end. I say "Up" and Willow trots into my hands and actually springs off the floor with her feet once my hands are around her. Sometimes the spring is a little too enthusiastic! :bounce: And I have to be careful she doesn't bounce right back out. So I keep my hands low until I am sure she is secure.

Charlie is a relaxed 'lil guy. He loves to be held and snuggled.

roxysmom

Roxy is pretty relaxed because she has been trained at night that she cannot jump on the bed. So, she waits for me to pick her up and put her in the bed. She is usually good about it unless I come up from behind her too fast and startle her.

Merry always wants to be picked up and will pretty much jump into my arms. Bart is ok to pick.. you just have to be careful when and where.... he still has a submissive peeing problem. It is best to pick him up with him facing away :D Or the best thing is to sit in a chair and let him jump up into your lap first.

When I pick Grandy up, I put my right hand under her chin and she steps up onto my wrist so I can cup her chest and my left hand scoops her little butt up.

Otto'sMom

Otto demands to be picked up, he's totally relaxed and happiest when perched on my hip. Gert really doesn't like me to pick her up, but she wants to sit next to me and will propell her sausage shaped body up with those little toothpick old lady legs of hers. Dolly is too big to be held, but likes to lay on top of me. Violet, the little foster I want to keep whom I suspect is a dachshund mix, always wants to be in my arms, and just snuggles up there.

Schnitzel's Mom
06-25-2004, 03:04 PM
Schnitzel is such a prissy dog. When she wants to be picked up (onto the couch, bed, chair, whatever) she will raise one front paw and place it in your hand. The only thing I can equate this to is when women used to get out of carriages in the Victorian Age. They would place one hand out of the door and the footman would take her hand and help her out. It is by far the funniest thing I see Schnitzel do. Cracks me up!

Thor helps you pick him up. He is always ready. So is Grace, however, because of her 'former' life she STILL hunkers down to the ground.:( Once I get her picked up she loves it.:)

Lambdog

Priscilla hates being picked up. She has to come to you. If you try to pick her up, she runs away.
Elvis will jump into my arms. Up until he was 2, he didn't like to be picked up at all, but would allow it.
I'm always careful with both when picking them up. I get down to their level and do it gently and slowly.

Missy is fine with being picked up. With Zekers, I tell I am gonna pick him up first. Once I tell him I scoop him up with one hand under his behind and one under his chest and he's fine. If it means he gets a ride he's good with it.
I would need a crane to pick up Casey.

Mia's Mom

Mia is relaxed and likes to be picked up. I don't pick her up immediately after I come home from work, though, because she is always a little zoomie ball of fire for a while! First we eat, then put on the harness and leash and walk off some of that energy - then she can come into my lap. Whew! Even after all that I usually have to let her have a good long chew on a toy or with me holding one end of a rawhide while on my lap before she is totally rid of the greeting excitement. If I try to love on her and pet her too soon, she is mouthy and squirmy, so we just get through that stage before the lovin' starts. Then I have a sweet lap puppy for the rest of the evening. :D

And whenever I pick her up she is so wiggly that I can hardly hold on to her. She wags her little tail so hard that she almost can wriggle out of my arms! I have to really hold her tightly!
Blue will hold her little feet up for me to pick her up, then she goes all rigid/ mountain goat on me, and climbs up a bit, and then will bite me gently on the nose! I truly think that is her way of showing me affection.

I voted for three! Because... http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/square.gif
• If Solo & Bacca are not feeling particularly bothered with being loved, they're just relaxed - no big deal.
• If they're wanting loving then they help you to pick them up...
• When we have been out anywhere (whether 5 mins. or 5 hours) they get so excited that they almost fall out of our arms!

Oliver always helps when I pick him up. He does this little jump thing and it gives me leverage. With Tammy, I always use the word "up" so that she knows what I'm about to do. She then lays on the floor and becomes totally relaxed which doesn't really help the process of picking up such a long doggie!

Cocoa and Me
01-24-2006, 11:23 AM
Well, I guess that all depends. I chose gets so excited almost falls out of your arms.

When I come home from work, shopping, the market, or even getting the mail Cocoa reacts like I have been got for months or years! If I just come out of my bedroom...she'll help me pick her up, she kinda grabs on to your arm as you pick her up...so cute :luv: But other times...when she is being her crazy little puppy dachsie self, she is like water...can grab it, can slow it down. LOL :happy046:

Easy. Nook Nook wants you to pick her up. In fact, it will calm her down quicker than anything!

My 2 boys Spike(4) and Dexter (4) They loved to be picked up and help like babies! Chloe (6months) is a wild child and gets all gitty she loves to snuggle too but I can never hold her standing up unless I got a death grip on her! And Buddi (2?) he loves to be held also so so far so good with him!

Barry's mom
03-05-2006, 12:34 AM
Barry is so good about letting me pick him up. When it's time for bed, he looks at the bed, then at me, like "well, lets get to it!!" He stands real still so I can get one hand under his chest and the other under his backend and then he does a little "jump" to help me. It's so sweet. Since he's had his neck problems, I tell him everynight before we go to sleep to not jump off the bed, to remember to tell me if he needs to get down before morning and that's what he does - if he needs to get down to go potty, he walks on my feet to wake me up. Of course, my bed is really funny looking. I've made "bumper pads" out of blankets to keep him from jumping off. I wish they made bumper pads for queen size beds - they sure would come in handy at my house

Holly is pretty relaxed about it, doesnt do anything to help but is ready to be cuddled. Mckenzie turns in to a boneless bag of goo, very hard to get a good grip on her.

LuckysMom
03-05-2006, 08:47 AM
If Lucky wants picked up he runs up to me and jumps putting his paws on my knee but then when I actually go to pick him up he goes all rigid on me. I suspect he has been dropped etc in the past. But once I have him and I stand back up he is the cuddle monster.

I have four and they are all different. Scruffy squirms and wiggles from excitement and I have to hold tight to him. Rudy ALWAYS wants picked up, loves to be carried. Wally has to come to u when he wants attention but chills once u pick him up. Oakley stiffens up and he is the biggest dog I have(17pds), so wide load! haha :hug2:

EDIT: I should have voted #5, I voted "Other"

LB will roll on his back and then go limp as a wet noodle.

I have to roll him onto his side before I pick him up because I am afraid that I will hurt his back picking him up like that.

Beau is a slippery soap! I can't get a grip on him, he just goes boneless! (good way to describe it...haha!) It's getting even harder as he is getting longer & I have to remember to grab him by the butt too so he's not just hanging there.

Mine has responded VERY well in the last month to "STOP" then a pause, then "Let Momma help you" He is fine with letting me pick him up now. I started this after he spent 5 nites at the vet's with a calcified disc. I encourage all doxie owners to start picking up ASAP, so they dont have to be re-trained!

Schatzi is easy to pick up - she knows to "pivot" (back to us for pick up). Xena will "snarck" at you to be picked up, but just stands & wags & wags her tail! Oskar - can be picked up - but I always weigh my options first. If I want to bathe him, clean his teeth, ears, nails, etc,, I just walk over & pick him up. For cuddling though, he comes to me & I sweet-talk him! He is Daddy's boy first & foremost - Mommy ranks #2.

Charlie doesn't really like to be picked up. He becomes afraid, which probably comes from his puppy mill days. It seems that he gets anxious about why you're picking him up & what will happen next. We're working on this as it's truly an issue of trust. The only time I pick him up is when going in or outdoors, or in or out of the car because I'd like him to avoid steps as much as possible.

Now our Casper (who went to the bridge on 9/1/07 ) also preferred not being picked up, but he would help out, I think just to get it over with!

Sailor does this run and jump technique.... (not sure where he learned that one) and then at times he tries to climb me as if I'm a tree or something. That usually happens when I see he for the first time after my husband and I have been gone for a day or two and he is staying at a friends house.

He really doesn't like to be picked up mostly. (He's the independant type) he won't let anyone else pick him up other then me. He hates it when my husband tries to pick him up and goes stiff like a board. When someone else tries to pick him up, he wiggles like a crazy one to get down... he'll even give kisses so you will put him down.

Macy Mae gets WAY excited and i can't hold her! Sammy just loves being held and lays in your arms like a teddy bear.
