This is Olivia, a Dachshund that we rescued from death row yesterday. She is very tiny and weighs 10lbs. She looks just like a purebred Dachshund with black and tan markings, except for a little white spot on her chest. I have looked up many patterns and pictures of Dachshunds to see if it is possible for a purebred Dachshund to have a white spot such as this...perhaps from bad breeding even(???). I know there are piebald patterns, but aren't they usually more white?
She has mange, a skin infection, an injured leg, and is heartworm positive. She recently had puppies and appears to have been attacked by another dog. She has a deep gash across the bridge of her nose and numerous cuts all over her. She is very malnourished and is on about 5 different medications already. We are waiting to get her better before we get her spayed and treated for heartworms. She is so affectionate, though, so I'm sure we won't have any problems placing her as she has already come out of her shell completely.

Wow, such a pretty girl. My Harley is a red smooth purebred and he has a white spot on his chest. I used to have a black and tan purebred who also had the same thing only not as big. Could be something in her genes. The others here would know better though!
How old is she?
Good Luck with her she does look a little scared but I'm sure she's a sweetheart! :D

Awww- she's very sweet! Thanks for rescuing her!
I have no doubt she's 100% dachsie- though it's hard to tell whether she's showing some piebald, or just a white chest patch. White patches on the chest show up from time to time, in varying degrees. They're not something desired in the breed- nobody would TRY to breed for them- but it's not that uncommon.
Sometimes a dog carrying Piebald will show just a little spotting- usually a spot on the chest and/or feet. And yup- they do turn up more frequently in sloppy breeding (there aren't a ton of GOOD piebald breeders out there- but see http://www.romandachs.com- one of our member's sites- for her handsome pies).
In any case, she's lovely. Welcome to her- and welcome to YOU!
Feel better, Olivia! :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

Thanks! Olivia is approx. 2 years old and is up for adoption through Furbabies Animal Rescue and Aid in Statesboro, GA. You can read more about her by visiting: www.furbabies.petfinder.com. She is so sweet. Everyone that has met her so far has fallen head over heels in love with her. She was picked up by animal control as a stray several weeks ago and no one ever claimed her. Because of her problems, the shelter couldn't adopt her out and were due to euthanize her this afternoon.

You are definitely an  Olivia's a cutie...yes she is pure-breed with a piebald gene. Even my puppy Pixel which is what you would envision when you think piebald, has a sister which looks just like Olivia.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for saving her!!!! Hopefully now she can find a life she deserves and put the past behind her!

and definetly pure bred. Poor little angel sounds like lots of tlc are needed. You'll have no problem placing her once she's healthy and feels safer. I just want to reach in and hold her.

So if a red or b/t dachshund has a white spot on them they probably have piebald in them? Could they every produce piebald pups?
Just curious....;)

No- a white chest can show up anytime. Both my boys have tiny, itty bitty white "tuxedos"- Dutch's is much more noticeable- and neither have any piebald in their lines for at least a while back.
If the white spot is a result of piebalding- then I'd guess so. :D

to have a double dapple with only ONE pure white spot... since dappling from each parent is TOTALLY random. Cassie's primary white area is on her chest (although you can see a lot of single dappling on her).

Angel had a little wisp of white on her chest when she was little, but it's totally gone now. Like the others said, a little white on the chest is not uncommon even with a pure red or B&T.
I am not an expert, so I will shut up now and just add that Olivia is adorable!!!!

I agree... Stinker had a white "star" on her chest too ... it is something that appears sometimes -- even in pure reds and black and tans.

I think she's purebred. White does show up sometimes although I don't think it's considered desirable.

Thanks for all your help! I had just never seen a dachshund with white patch such as that. The good news is that I think Olivia may have already found a home. The lady is a vet tech at our vet's office and already has two dachshunds, so I know she is aware of all the problems they can have with their backs and such. I knew as soon as this lady saw her that she would fall in love with Olivia. She called yesterday to request an application and her husband is coming to meet Olivia on Tuesday. This is very good news for Olivia because since the lady works at our vet's office I know she will be able to foster Olivia (once she's no longer contagious) and bring her back and forth for her spay and heartworm treatment. I hope everything works out with them because I know she'd be very spoiled and well-taken care of in their family.
