I am on the mailing list for DRNA. I read a message stating that 2 men beat 3 doxies http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angryfire.gif killing 2 of them. they ar going to trial on Monday. The most they will get is 6 mo and/or $750 fine. The woman was requesting email letters to take to court with her stating your feelings on animal abuse and recommend animal abuse be a felony. Her email is tackel12@aol.com
mine is normtam@swbell.net if you want to see the original message.

It also came through on Carolina Pet Rescue. A horrible story. I have suggested they post it here. I know they will get a lot of help.

Hi Sam's Mom,
You beat me in getting this news out. I'm attaching Teresa's original message here to help encourage the largest possible response. If you have a weak stomach don't read the full description of what happened. I know Teresa personally and received the attached message as part of a personal e-mail. She a very devoted rescue individual the Colorado coordinator for DRNA.

------------Begin Attached Message-----------
Ok Folks.......
Let me tell you the story, I have verified with Gayla Molatch, United States Humane Society, then let me tell you how you can help.
On June 16th, the owner of 3 Doxies, (Amanda, 15 year old, Huggy, 4 year old male, Honey 4 year old) went into the hospital in Powell, Wyoming. While this woman was in the hospital her two male roomates (ages 38 & 39), took her 3 doxies in the car and drove 11 miles to a gravel pit. At the pit,
one man took the 3 doxies out of the car, the senior, Amanda suffered a heart attack,
but the man dragged her a 1/2 mile on her leash and smashed her head with a hammer, he then took the male, Huggy and beat him to death with a hammer, he then took the female Honey hit her in the head with a hammer, Honey got up, he hit her again with a hammer, she got up again, he hit her again and then
thru her down the embankment. The men left, Honey crawled up the embankment (with a smashed foot), past her dead buddies and then 3 miles, she was out there 2 days before someone found her and took her to the vet. She is in a foster home and will survive. The owner continues to live with the man that
did this to her Doxies (another story).
These 2 men go to court on Monday the 24th, it is not a felony in WY to abuse animals and the max they will get for each count is 6 months in jail and a fine of $750.00, so combined it's 18 months and $2,250.00.
Their names are Sidney Shipman (the man whose idea it was and the one who leashed them and put then in the car, and couldn't get out of the car to do it after 11 mile journey, but didn't stop it) and Gilbert Wozney (the man
that actually did it and confessed)
What Gayla needs is......Letters that state your personal view of animal abuse, recommending that abuse become a felony. The horrors of abuse might be detered if it was a felony, that these 3 Doxies deserved to live & not die from this horrible death, and that these men (?) need the maximum penalty
plus mental treatment (so they don't do this again)
The court date is Monday, I'm going to try and get the day off and do the 9 hour one way trip, to be there. Please send me your letters, and I will fedex them on Friday, so she can get them to the DA on Monday morning.
This is horrible and Gayla said the worst part was photographing their bodies for
evidence, and feeling the terror they went thru, the little girl Honey, who
survived, will NEVER be returned to the owner, who chooses to live with the
killer. Please help me, get some justice and send your letters to me at home (Tacke12@Aol.Com) or work (TShively@Celestica.com). We need to act
fast, and I know you will all come thru, I want to influence the Judge to do the
right thing.........Teresa & The Colorado 8-Pack ps, Sorry if you get this many times, I'm sending to all my lists....T

That is one of the most horrible stories I have ever heard. How could anyone do that to a living breathing creature? And why?
Ppl that do these kind of things are sick, they don't need to be out in the world to do harm to animals or eventually ppl. And the woman who still lives with them needs help also. Maybe someone should hit all three of em with a big hammer and makem walk 3 miles bleeding and suffering. This makes me mad and sick at the same time. UGGGHHHHH.

I am sickened by this !!
I have written a letter with my opinons on why these men should be charged with a Felony!!
God I hope justice is done, please keep the board posted on this storyhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

I'll be emailing them from home tonight.
I also cross posted this to the WW board where I know others will help too.
I had a thought. Would someone who writes well and convincingly post a copy of their letter here? Maybe it would help people know what to say, or even basically copy. That might prompt those with mental blocks or time constraints to send off an email -especially if someone doesn't read this until the last minute.

Sam's Mom and Tom, thank you for taking the time to let us know about this. Great idea to ask for letters about the concept of animals as property that can be used and abused in any way, with only a slap on the wrist for the most horrendous acts. This surely qualifies.
My e-mail goes out tonight. I'm also forwarding this page to my anti-puppy mill friends in the area.

Sometimes I realllly hate people http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angry.gif !!!
I will cross-post this to my pit list and send to friends privately and I will email this woman to help as I can.
This just makes me sick. Sophie, my pit baby, was beat with a hammer on her right hind leg . . . .those poor, poor babies.
They all need help--esp. that woman for staying . . .. until he tries to kill her!

I would suggest you cut and past the e--mail addresses from my earlier posting on this page. I used the cut and paste method to forward her message. It's easy to make a typo in her AOL address. I've never used her work e-mail so no comments on that one. Teresa most likely wont see any mail sent to the AOL address until she gets home from work tonight.
Thank you all for your response and support. Besides sending my letter to Teresa tonight I will ask her to keep me informed on what happens so that I can keep all of you informed. I don't expect I will have any news until next week at the earliest.

Krista:
Here is what I sent.
**********
I can assure the court that the type of brutality exhibited by the two men involved in the killing and maiming of the Dachshunds, will usually escalate to a level involving children or other adults.
Punishment and heavy fines will help alert them to the fact that their behavior is not normal and will not be tolerated. Mandatory counselling needs to be an important part of the sentence imposed.
Otherwise, the next time they are before the bar, the charges may be much more serious.
Please use your ability to hand down the most responsible sentence allowed under the law in your jurisdiction.
Sincerely
**************
The rationale is that there are really 2 different subjects. The first is to see the strongest sentence possible handed down, the seond is to change the law.
The judge can only do what the _now_ statute permits.
My letter is an attempt to put the responsibilty for any future acts these men may commit, right in the judge's lap, if he doesn't prosecute to the fullest extent.
I doubt the political powers that be in Wyoming, are going to pay any attention to a lady in NC asking them to change their laws.
I'd probably be regarded and dismissed as a dingbat animal activist.
Therefore, I feel appealing to the judge _may_ do the most good. Not a final solution but a first step.
It is a stomach churning situation.

I would suggest not sending from more than one e-mail address and that you also include you name and address in your message. We want to present a profession appearance to the court officials and not make it appear like we are some group of crazed radicals. These are my personal views I haven't discussed this with Teresa. Knowing Teresa and I am making assumptions about the United States Humane Society representative but I'm sure your name and address will not be given out but would just be passed on to the courts.

I based this letter on one posted on the WW and made a few minor changes - fell free to do the same if you so wish.
********************************************
To whom It May Concern:
I am writing in reference to the upcoming litigation against Sidney Shipman and Gilbert Wozney. For their sake and the sake of all living creatures within their reach, I truly hope you will prosecute them to the fullest level possible. The horror of their crime should demand justice for those poor innocents that he terrorized and murdered. I refer to the Dachshunds who had the misfortune of being exposed to their depravity and evil. I realize that it is not a felony, yet, in Wyoming for animal abuse. I hope and pray that this horrid act brings more attention and thought to those who have the power to make and enforce such a law.
It has been proven that serial killers of humans almost always have started with using animals as their first victims. Jeffrey Dahmer admitted in interviews that he started his psychotic behavior with animals. Shouldn't we as a society intervene with action to get the appropriate help to these individuals before they move on to human victims? I truly believe that those who perpetrate such crimes would think twice if it was a felony charge tacked on to animal abuse. They should also be required to go to counseling.
Having been an animal lover since childhood, I can't believe that humans are capable of such acts against innocent, loving, and trusting creatures. I have been blessed with the Dachshunds in my life and know that they are all of the above plus loyal, intelligent, courageous, and sensitive fellow beings.
Please, do the right thing. Please put them away and mandate psychological therapy for these sick individuals. Please make animal abuse a felony so that others may know the seriousness of the crime and possibly be deterred.
Sincerely,

Hi Tom:
Do you think, now that we have the email address of the newspaper, it would be of value/benefit to also send our letters there?
I am wondering, even if they were to not publish what we send, would it alert them to the fact that what has happened has caught the attention of pet owners all over the country?
I'll wait for your reply,

I'm so glad to see the support this group is giving. I sent my letter yesterday and have encouraged all of my coworkers to send one also. Please, if you haven't sent a letter, send one today. If these men can brutally beat and kill a pet dog...they can do the same to a person. They need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Lets do this for Amanda, Huggy, and Honey!

Any luck contacting your friend regarding sending letters to the press in Wyoming? We do not have much time since the court date, according to the post we received, is Monday.

Yes the newspaper link does work - paste it into the url box at the top of your screen - from somewhere you'll see an extra "," or 2 at the beginning and end. Delete those commas and voila - the newspaper main page.
I went to editorials - I sent messages to both names and got prompt responses that they weren't around - fishing believe it or not - but with 2 other names. So of course I sent my letters there. THEN near the top of the following page I saw a spot to email editorials so of course I did.
How about we deluge this newspaper with editorials - we're from all over, right?
FYI this is what I wrote (also to Teresa)
To: Prosecution against Sidney Shipman
and Gilbert Wozney
From: Georgette Madak
Regarding: Dachshund Abuse/Murder
Date: July 23, 2000
The dachshund abuse crime that recently took place in Wyoming is receiving a great deal of national concern. Of course words do not exist that convey adequate contempt for Gilbert Wozney and Sidney Shipman. PLEASE show by your strong example in prosecution that we cannot allow those deranged beings who abuse animals the privilege of freedom. Please remember the strong relationship that has been shown between those who abuse animals and later exacerbation in crime. This is an opportunity to set a precedent in favor of justice. If only the sentence could cause these "men" to feel a fraction of the sickening fear and pain that they caused to other living beings. Please take a stand toward making animal cruelty a major crime. I needed to stop while writing this letter because I became physically ill. My feelings for animals are obviously intense. Please help the appropriate criminals to understand that they are the minds that should be feeling "sick".
Respectfully,

Great job, Georgette. I sent my email to : letters@trib.com
Here's what I said:
Hundreds, perhaps thousands of compassionate people across the country are focused on the outcome of the trial involving criminal brutality, inflicted by two adults on three small, defenseless dogs. I would like to add my support to those of you, in your area, who have the power and the ability to make your voices heard in the halls of justice. Please speak up for the little Dachshunds who suffered so much and are unable to speak for themselves.
You have the opportunity to set an example for the entire country by enforcing the laws you already have on the books and enacting new, stronger legislation against crimes of this nature. Historically, abuse against children and adults, often begins with the torture of
animals.
Sincerely,

Hey Fellow Doggie Lovers,
I'm on 14 hour days at work, so this will be quick. I'll try to send personal notes to everybody that sent letters, on Friday, so PLEASE forward.
Talked to Gayla Monday night, she was excited and SOOOOO Happy with the support you have shown, I emailed her almost 200 letters and continue to get daily email. She gave them all to the DA and the DA walked in with your letters on top of everything she had. So of course these guys both asked for public defenders. Wozney has to find a lawyer and go back to court August 10th, owns a 1 year old ? dog, that they are trying to get away from him. Shipman, was granted a Public Defender and will go back to court on August 7th, he has a 12 year old dog with cancer. As courts go, I'm sure this will get dragged out, but I'll keep you updated. Thank You each and Every One for your letters, and keep them coming.........Teresa Shively, Dachshund Rescue of Colorado, Dachshund Rescue of North America (Teresa & The Colorado 8-Pack)

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Tom. Like everyone else, this has been uppermost on my mind.
Since the next court dates are a couple of weeks away, I would strongly urge every one who has not sent an email to do so. I really expected she would have received more than she has, so far.
The most astonishing thing, for me, is that both of these screwballs own dogs. And doesn't that give us another couple of pups to worry about?
The best part is that the DA seems to be taking this seriously.
I haven't tried but I wonder if it would be possible to see the newspaper coverage? Any hot ideas on that, Tom?
Again, thanks,

Tom, thanks for keeping us all up to date on this issue.
I second Roxane's plea: Anyone who hasn't sent an e-mail, please send one! Teresa's e-mail address is Tacke12@aol.com.
Finally, regarding the astonishing facts that (1) these subhumans have dogs and (2) the court is "trying" to take the dogs away (as opposed to simply walking into their homes and removing the dogs to safety, with no trouble from anyone!), let's stop licensing dogs and start licensing prospective dog owners. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/angry.gif
