Hello
I have stumbled on an opportunity to fulfil a dream of mine, to show a dog to championship. I am hoping to find someone who will mentor me in the Rochester NY area to bring this wonderful, standard longhair to his full potential.

That is great!
I am sorry I have no one to suggest! Maybe you could check with the Dachshund Club of America and see if they could help with names?

I would too recommend to contact DCA and get phone numbers for breeders in your area.

Hello
The person who is willing to let me have this exciting prospect already checked the DCA member roll for people near me. There simply are not many reputable, top quality breeders in Western New York. I have found a Corgi breeder who will mentor me. I just need to find someone to walk me through the grooming. I have signed up for the all-breed handling class in town, and I may be able to find a mentor there as well.
As soon as I have the puppy, I will be joining DCA as well. I do not count my eggs until they are hatched, so I am waiting until I have a dog.
Thanks
Patrick

I bought my AKC dachsie from Joanne Tarby in Auburn, NY. She breeds and shows her dachsies. If she isn't close enough to you, she may know someone in the Rochester area. Good luck!

I myself found breeders at the shows being very helpful and willing to give you a tip or two on grooming, handling, etc. I would recommend bringing your pup to shows once you get all his shots. This will help the pup get used to the commotion of the shows and allthe different dogs.
But, don't jump the gun yet. Some pups look really good and then fall apart as they mature. You just never know what you will end up with. That's why some people prefer to purchase older dogs for show potentials.

Good Luck with finding someone to mentor you. Have you checked into your local Daschund Club. That way you would get to know a group of people and their dogs. There are no quarantees with puppies for show. You might have one that looks great but as was already said. Might fall apart as they mature and others that look iiiffffy might end up to be super show dogs. Have you thought of offering your service to one of the breeders and to have them help you in your search? Doxie show people are usually pretty friendly and helpfull.
Or have you thought of co-owning a dog? I have with my first doxie and it had worked out great. That was many years ago and I still love the dogs that she has been showing. And I was lucky enough to find one of that first doxies grandkids. But she is now 10 years old. :waving:
