I was looking in the paper yesterday and saw that a Doxie X was available for adoption. I called the number to see if there was anything I could do to help them - maybe list the doxie on drwp or with drna.

The rescue group is Animal Alliance. They do all breed rescue from shelters that sell to research facilities. The gentleman that answered was a little disgusted with me. He asked why I would bother with dachshund rescue since they are always adopted quickly and don't NEED rescuing like the large mixed breeds do.

I explained that in the US dachshunds are popular with millers because they are small and can fetch high prices. I told him that there are A LOT of dachshunds needing homes in the US. He softened a little and said he understood.

Unfortunately there was nothing I could do to help this group. They didn't need donations of anything since they get their food and medical care donated by corporations. The only thing I could do was to tell people about them if they were looking to adopt.

Many shelters have told me the same thing - there is no need for dachshund rescue. Small dogs are always adopted within a week of arriving at the shelter.

In this situation it is nice not to be needed. I still do what I can for rescue groups and shelters... I've even donated stuff for CATS (don't tell F&O).

I think dachshund rescue may be more for sick, elderly, tempermental dachshunds that regular people don't or won't deal with. Lobo was left at a shelter and was due to be PTS because he was heartworm positive. I snatched him at the last moment, treated the HW and now he is doing great in his new home. Bogey is my newest from the shelter. He was just crazy....mounting everything, attacking dogs, no interest in humans at all. He has really turned around and this little gem will be a great little dog for someone...such a little personality.

Older dachshunds are usually left out of the adoptable list as most people just don't want to take them on. I think we are really needed especially as we always do homechecks to ensure a good home for each doggie.

Unfortunatley it's true that bigger dogs especially mixed breeds don't get adopted as quiclky as small dogs do. I'm not sure if ppl just don't have enough space or what. I know in some respects smaller dogs are easier but I think the big guys can make great housepets to.
I was a member of the Humane Society in our district a few yrs back. I went to my 1st meeting and heard the board speak about to many dogs being adopted out, and how they could not afford to keep up with nuetering and spaying costs etc. This particular society charges $35 males and $50 for females to be adopted. They also have a vet that does the nuetering at a low cost. My biggest question was why they didn't have enough money for these procedures, I thought that's what the adoption fees were for. When it came right down to it they were worried about having money in the bank. What sickened me though was the fact that they didn't want animals adopted out, they actually turned down free tv advertisement offers saying they didn't need more publicity, there were enough animals being adopted out. These ppl were not animal lovers, just ppl that thought being on the humane society board would make a good impression on others. They don't wanna know the impression I got from them, I was sickened.

Our local groomer/trainer/boarding place has animals up for adoption at it all the time. It is one of two no-kill shelters. Last night when we went to get more food for Bud the kids asked to see the animals up for adoption. All were large dogs and a few appeared to be purebred. It is so sad to see all these animals without homes. They said the kids could come back anytime and take a dog out to their play area if we would like. I have a feeling we will be doing that alot. Until my kids insist on bringing them all home.

Our local Animal Shelter tries very hard to be a no kill shelter, but they do rely on donations to operate. They are presently trying to raise $25,000.....a lot of money for this very small town. The shelter covers a 3 county area and I can tell you the surrounding counties could care less, esp since they don't have to see it. They would like to have a larger facility with newer equip/kennels so they can better care for the dogs and cats that come in. So to raise this $25,000 the shelter administrator got a local car dealership to donate a brand new truck and they are selling raffle tickets at $100 each. They are selling 2,500 chances to win this vehicle. I thought it was a Great Idea and Thank Goodness for the caring dealership that donated the truck! Well the kicker of the story is the Shelter Administrator is "Camping Out" 24/7 on top of one of our local grocery stores (Tent and All.....internet access too!) and absolutely will not come down until the last ticket is sold. He started this on July 1st and if it takes months he will still be up there. It is extremely muggy here right now, the temps range from 84-95 degrees with the heat index often above 100 degrees. I just thought it was a good story and I would share it. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
