Hi all. My family and I had just adopted Keiki several days ago. She's a precious 9 week old. Well I have a 4 year old son that fed her some of his lunch & dinner, without me knowing. And now that Keiki has been introduced to it, it's ALL she wants. She refuses to eat her own food, and whines at us when we're eating. It's been 3 days now..and her food is still untouched. I'm a new dachsie mom and I really would appreciate any advice. Thanx!!

Try mixing cottage cheese in with her kibble. Most dogs love it, mine do. :) She WILL eat when hungry enough, but since she's a pup, she needs to eat properly. What brand of kibble are you feeding? Make sure it's a premium brand and not grocery store kind. You might want to boil some white rice and mix it with her kibble. Or try the cottage cheese.

Your Son needs to stop this. Tell him that the puppy needs it's own special food.

I can second the cottage cheese but also blend in some soft boiled egg. We got that tip with one of the pups my folks got when I was growing up. The breeder despite having six two legged kids under the age of ten and a litter of about 6 (+-1) pups had them all well adjusted weaned and ready for their new homes.

Good luck,

She is in a WHOLE NEW WORLD so she is upset and does not have her littermates who she used to eat with .Try feeding her when you eat and makeing her part of your pack. The egg and cottage cheese ideas are good also try PLAIN yogert helps the tummy.Try a little teaspoon full of Pegigree canned mixed in but wean her off all the extra gooding once she starts to eat slowley otherwise she will never eat her dry food. Also if you are useing dry try soaking it in warm water before you mix in anything. Our very First Doxie did this to us but since then anyone that buys a pup from us says they have NEVER seen a dog eat so FAST.

Some of my dachsies are a little fussy. Barclay in particular. He weighs eight pounds on a good day, and that is with a full tummy. I try and tempt him with everything possible. What he will eat one day is shunned the next. But what never ceases to amaze me is, he will turn his nose up at the best cut of beef and then promptly scoff a load of horse pooh or worse down as if it is caviar........words fail me. The only other thing I would try is human baby food. I had one dog that refused to eat everything and I got him started back by feeding sweet potatoes, turkey and banana baby foods. Expensive, but it worked and within a week, he was eating dog food again. Rena

Thank you all for the advice. Keiki is once again eating her food.. per the last question.. We have her on Nutro Puppy. I'm hoping that it's a good brand to feed her as it was suggested to me by her breeder. Since she was introduced to the human food..she went 3-4 days on only maybe 5 PIECES of her food..and water! I was so worried about her. She just refused to eat. It was SO hard not to give in to her and give her something I KNEW she'd take..like a big ol' hot dog!! -BUT- I knew it wouldn't be the best thing for her.
I did try the egg.. thank you.. Yes it did work. She finally ate! I was so relieved. I did that once, mixed just a little bit of soft boiled egg in there, just for a little extra flavor. Her next meal, it was just her food in a little bit of warm water, she ate that too. And now she's eating it dry. I found that she likes carrots. That's kinda nice. Although she does STILL whine at us when we're eating, I don't mind, I just have a little bit of her food in a sandwich bag, I pretend I'm eating it..& she scarfs it down! Silly girl. And being that she loves to chew on everything, (10 weeks old and teething) I just bought her a pig ear. Is that safe for her baby teeth?
Thanks again for all your tips! You've all been very helpful.

I'm glad that she is eating...and eating her own food. A lot of people give pig ears for chewies (I don't because no mater how many chewies are avaialable, the "Girls" always wants what is in the other ones mouth, then comes the arguing...They will share food, eat of the same bowl, share toys, bed, eerything but chewies) Just supervise when she has a chewy like that just in cae she chews it down small enough and soft enough for her to try to swallow it and get choked.

Good Luck

I'm glad I'm not alone. I have to hide the chew toys that my pups love, as they will literally steal them from each others mouths and have real fights over them. It got so bad I had to quit giving them out, which I feel bad about since they like them so much, but those chews are not worth the hassle.

As far as the food issue, we give our pups a little spoonful of Pedigree in with their dry food, and they love it. However, our vet told us canned food wasn't really a good choice, as you don't always know what is in it. Canned food is considered to be what would be like potato chips and ice cream to us...junk food. However, she said puppies need a lot of protein, and if you want to give them something else, you can give them green beans or canned tuna/chicken.

I don't feed canned food, generally, but I diasgree with the statement that canned foods are like junkfood.

Canned food and dry food both might have questionable "junky" ingredients, but both do have ingredient lists on them and it is up to as as dog owners to learn how to read them. I won't feed things with byproducts, chemical preservatives, lots of corn/corn products, soy/soy products, added sugars (sorghum, corn syrup etc..) or artifical colors or flavors to start. These things can be in canned foods or dry foods.

If you want to feed canned with your dry, there are some good brands out there with good ingredients. Some that come to mind are Innova, Wellness, Spot's Stew, some of Wysong's formulas....etc. There are more, just read your lables :) .
