I really need some advice here. Pippit has obviously been allowed to do some things that are not good for his back. He stands up on his hind legs and will "walk", he jumps on everything and off of everything, takes two stairs at a times and does the same thing going down. And he's so fast that I usually don't have time to stop him. I have "caught" him a few times and will pick him up to get him where he wants to go. What else can I do?

Wow! Harley started to do the sitting up thing but we stopped that. I've never seen a dachsie take 2 steps at a time!
I have really no advice since I have my own wild man to control who runs down the steps faster than any dog I've ever had!:dizzy:
Good Luck!
Oh boy, I do hope someone will give suggestions I'm having the same problem with Trixie. Evidently she has been allowed to do the same, she's so fast I can't stop her. She will obey if we catch her before the jump. We have ramps but she would rather jump because it's faster. Good Luck :D

Well I won't have too much in the way of advice. As far as sitting up goes it's not something I encourage but if a little ones comes by it naturally I don't try to make them stop. The instructors at the dog massage class say that they actually consider a dog who does things like sitting up at a lower risk of back injury. Their theory is that the extra muscle tone the dog develops doing such activities helps support the spinal structure and thus reduces their risk of an accidental injury. Dexter is my silent sitter. I can be eating something and look over to find him sitting up at attention but down on the ground. I've seen him sit like that without moving or saying a word for at least five to ten minutes straight. Tanner sometimes sits up for attention and use to dance on his hind legs but he found it didn't get him any extra attention so he gave that up. Frank gets jealous of the other two show offs. After watching Tanner he tried to sit up a couple of times but he is too long and slender and just can't find the balance point to stay upright rolling to one side or the other.
Tanner is my stair terror racing up and down them but I can't ever remember seeing him take more than one step at a time. Frank dislikes the stairs so seldom goes down to the basement with me (that's fine with Tanner). Dexter sometimes will do the stairs but in general would just as soon stay put in the living rom chair or the big bed. I let them do stairs if they want to but don't make a point of trying to encourage then to do stairs if they aren't already inclined to do so. One think both Tanner and Dexter have figured out about the stairs is that they are a good place to get some dad time without Frank moving in. Tanner and Dexter being smaller boys 11.5# each have no problems stopping mid flight on the stairs even turning around to head the opposite direction. Frank at 18.5# and being much longer has never figured out how to stop mid flight. Once he gets moving either up or down you best stay out of his way because he can't stop till he is back on level ground.
Good luck
