Hi all.

Here's the recipe we got from the breeder where we got Bugsy. I'm presenting it as provided by her so can't answer any 'why's' about it. Bugsy is healthy and enjoys his food so I'm happy to continue making it for him. On the advice of the breeder, he also is getting a few Innova kibbles at each meal, too. It works out to about 2Tbsp each of Innova and the Rice Diet twice a day and a few treats and carrot chunks for snacks. (Bugsy is a mini.) Enjoy!

Rice Diet for Dachshunds

(I triple the recipe and freeze it divided into small yoghurt containers. The amount lasts about 2~3 weeks and then I make more.)

Bring the following ingredients to a boil.

1 c. water
1/2 tsp. salt (adds Iodine)
1 tsp. vegetable oil (Canola or Corn)
1/2-3/4 c. minced meat (beef, chicken or lamb)

Add the following to the meat mixture and bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Rice will soften and water will be absorbed.

1/2 c. rice, uncooked, white long grain
minced vegetables (celery, carrots, broccoli, yams, cabbage)
NB. no onions (toxic), no lettuce or tomatoes (water contents too high)
[Any combo, I think. I use carrots, zucchini and celery sometimes.]

Add to the mixture and cook 5 more minutes.

1.5 oz. liver, minced

[I freeze the pieces of liver and then mince when a bit thawed. I find this easier than when totally thawed out.]

Remove mixture from pot and spread on a tray to cool. When cool, mix in:

1 Tbsp. bone meal (for dogs)
1 Tbsp. wheat or oat bran

May be kept for 3 days in fridge or frozen for longer periods.

Daily to meal, add 100-200mg Ester-C powder. (For back care.)

Thanks so much for the recipe. I've been doing a little of the rice and meat mixture for Lili but this is even better. Where do I get Ester-C? This sounds like exactly what I've been looking for to solve some of the eating problems we have. Will let you know how it works.

I get the Ester-C from Health Food stores. Not too hard to find.
I hope Lili enjoys the food, Bugsy certainly does. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I know this is a dumb question but....Is the bone meal you use in the recipe the same as the bone meal I plant bulbs with? I couldn't find anything else? Just finishe cooking up a double batch and Lili's nose is twitching. I hate liver so that it was all I could do to chop it up.

Hi Lili's Mama,
The bone meal is not the same as you use in the garden. The one I'm using is called "Solid Gold Cooked bone meal". It says it's for puppies, growing dogs, pregnant bitches, and all dogs & cats. (I'd say that pretty much covers it. Heh.)
Anyway, I think I got it at a pet supply store. I'm still working on the first container. (The 2 lb size.)
If you need to compare with what you're looking at, the label says:
Crude protien min. - 12%
Crude fat min. - 20%
Calcium min. - 20%
Calcium max - 24%
Phosphorus min. - 10%

I did a brief search on the internet and found this site with the product. It didn't seem to be the only one though. http://www.naturalpets.net/solidgold.htm

And, I must say that I can't stand liver either. I also made another recipe of training treats which was about 90% liver. I was so disgusted I'm sure I'll never be able to make it again! What we won't do for our dogs, eh?

Let me know how Lili likes the recipe. Once when I was cooking it my sister came in and said, "Hmmm, that smells good!" For some reason, she didn't want to taste it.

I don't think you should feed your dog food made with the fertilizer type of bone meal. It could be toxic. I don't know how they process that type of bone meal but it could have extra nitrogen or phosporus that could hurt the critters.

Look in the supplement section of your pet supply or health food store for bone meal.
