Okay, I've got a food question. Both my little darlings seem to have pretty "stable" intestinal tracks and they don't seem to have real problems with new things...but I still have questions:

1. Everyone keeps talking about cheese and cottage cheese. My little dears do get small nibbles of cheese once in a while without incident, but the vet tells me NO on cheese or cottage cheese, or even yogurt, which my friend I know has successfully used to make her doxie's loose stools better. They've never had a problem with little portions, but I did give Chaucer cottage cheese when he was sick once and it made him barf.

2. What about fruits and veggies as treats? I know onions are a no-no, but what about other veggies. Chaucer especially likes cucumbers and gobbles them up like they are ambrosia. He also seems to like bananas, apples, carrots, pears and clementine oranges. I'm thinking these would be good treats as they are likely less fattening than the commercially available treats (beggin' strips, Bil-jac Liver treats (Gidget's favourite), Mother Hubbard, Nutre Puppy Drumsticks...) I worry about Chaucer's weight as he tends to be on the "big boned" side, but I'm a sucker and I like to be able to give him treats--does it work like in humans where you are unlikely to get fat from too many cucumbers?

Okey Dokey..

Yes, veggies are great snacks. Carrots, broccoli stems, watermelon even. I'd NEVER suggest feeding the processed snacks like Beggin' Strips, snausages etc. They're full of horrible things. Trust me on that.

Here's a great link http://members.home.net/mstraus/barfref.html It will give you tons and tons of insight on doggie food http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Hi,

I am curious about why onions are a no-no? Once in a while if we're chopping raw vegetables we will give little bits to the kids (it's the only people food we've ever allowed) including onion bits. We've never seen a problem because of it. They might also get some Green Pepper, Tomato or Broccoli occasionally and we do keep mini Carrots on hand as special treats every couple of days.

Just curious,

Mark

Veggies are great! Our guys love them. As far as cheese goes, you vet is probably right when it comes to a lot of cheese as many dogs cannot handle milk after they are adults. We give the boys little pieces of cheese to hide pills when they have to take them. And not having yogurt is a new one to me.....many of the recipes I have for summer dachsie treats have plain yogurt in them. We have never had a problem and the boys can't wait for their nana-yopups when it is warm outside.

But their absolute fav is veggies (I wouldn't feed them the store treats either....yucky stuff and tons of sugar and fat). Henry and Jakey each have their favorite veggies. Make sure you only let them have the part of the veggie that you would eat....some leaves and stems can be poisonous....for example, the leaves and stems of tomatoe plants are toxic, but the fruit is delicious and good for you (Henry's fav, by the way).

Well.... Onions, in great amounts, can cause anemia(sp?) I do believe. A little bit isn't going to hurt them.. Just like Chocolate, your pup doesn't need it's stomach pumped if it sneaks a few M & M's, but if it gets a hold of a square of Baker's Chocolate, you'd best run to the vet.

As for yogurt, I give goat's milk yogurt and have NO problems, it's common to feed it amoung Homeopaths. On the other hand, cows milk is tough for doggies to digest, so no cheese for Owen (But then, I don't eat it either). http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Onions cause Heinz body anemia. See the link for some additional info.

WOW, I didn't know that onion causes anemia!!Learn something new everyday!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Now MARK, why on earth would you want to feed your kids onion? Doesn't it give them "onion breath"?<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm43.gif" border=0> LOL!!

I give Freddie non-fat cottage cheese occasionally, and he LOVES it and tolerates it well. Same goes for cheese, but just a small piece (I give 1 CUBE from Kraft).
Tonight I gave him some canned peaches, he LOVED it. I also give him apple, carrot, and I add baby food like sweet potato (he LOVES sweet potato and string beans).

I guess some doggies are lactose-intolerant like people are!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/redface.gif

Well Susan . . . because they LIKE onions! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif And I figured (duh!) that raw veggies would be OK for them. Hmmm, I never noticed "onion breath", but they have only ever had very small portions.

Now Emily (our lasha) wouldn't touch a veggie for the world she just turns up her cute little button nose at them. But Mitzi will eat anything any where any time. I gave her half of a baby carrot for the 1st time the other day and she loved it.<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm3.gif" border=0> But I don't think I'll give her any canned fruit because of the high sugar content (she is hyper enough as it is). On the other hand I do give the both doggies pieces of meat like chicken, steak, etc. whatever we happen to be eating if it isn't to spicy for them. We've been feeding Emily like this for years and she hasn't had any weight problems. Hopefully it will hold true for Mitzi as well.

Don't forget the fruit too!!! My Sadie just goes bonkers for grapes. I have put them in bags, different bowls, anything to hide them. Somehow she knows when I get the grapes out of the refrigerator and she goes berserk.

Her favorite veggie is baby carrots. They make a wonderful nutritious treat.
