The Wyoming dogs have been heavy on my mind since the notices were posted yesterday. I've had some trouble, as I bet many of you have, clearing those images from my head. I've had a couple of moments when tears started out of the blue, and moments of pure rage, when I imagined how nice it would be to have those men suffer in the same way the dogs did. Not very humane thoughts, I know, but there you have it. Such cruelty is so beyond reason or sanity that the only possible response seems to be raw emotion.

Now comes the posting about the basset and bulldog puppy mill. More horrible images, more unimaginable cruelty, more vicious subhumans who will go unpunished.

So I thought I would share with you my happy afternoon. I went back to a home I had approved for a dachsie adoption, to see the new rescued dog and have the new mom sign the DRNA contract. This was a happy time. Cathy had already adopted Slinky (I posted about this earlier), a little red dachsie who had been kept by neighbors of hers who didn't want her. Now Slinky has a sister, Zoe, an absolutely adorable 14-pound black and tan smooth. Mostly black--her kiss marks are almost nonexistent.

I walked into the house, dachsies swirling around my feet. Zoe, in her brand new bright blue collar, looked as if she had lived in this house her whole life. But in fact, she was found wandering by the railroad tracks a few weeks back, and no one inquired about her or claimed her. Probably a drop. Within minutes, Zoe was rolling on top of her Kong and Slinky was rolling on top of her squeaky ball, and Cathy was saying she wanted more. More rescued dachsies!

This was an excellent antidote to all the sadness of the past couple of days. We have to keep remembering the big-hearted people who take these abandoned dogs in and give them secure, loving homes.

Also, I wanted to say how proud I am of this board, where people don't just moan about how awful people can be, but actually DO something about it. I'm so happy to be one of you! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I needed that- Thank You Pamela. I am doing my regular scan of the humane society, shelter internet sites tonight and feeling a little overwhelmed. Sooooo many throw away dogs...not dachshunds but just sweet little dogs that probably won't get the chance of a new home. Thank you for the uplifting story.

Pamela,

The Slinky & Zoe story warms my heart after the Wyoming story. I am having trouble too getting those images out of my mind. I can't fight the tears. I truly hope those people end up shot to death with their heads totally bashed in! There are just SICK individuals running around. Maybe someday I can become involved with Rescues. Maybe I shouldn't say this, but I care more about animals than I do people.

Pamela, thanks for finding words to express what so many of us are feeling right now. The story of what those poor dogs went through was so upsetting to me I wasn't able to read all of it. The thought actually crossed my mind to take a little trip to Wyoming and pay a visit... stupid I know, but I cannot stand hearing about these horrible men and the things they do. Notice how so often it's men too?
I get alot of grief from people because I am so into animals... and not so much into people. I much prefer the company of dogs to most people.
Thanks also for the sweet story about Zoe and Slinky... these stories keep us going.

It's times like this when I hope Buddist faith intervenes and the process of kharma kicks in. Kind loving people should be rewarded by accruing points to the ultimate goal-enlightenment;while the abusers (especially the two idiots in Why-oh-ming) get another whack at trying it over and over until they get it right. Maybe they'll comeback as little rats, those in the tiny cages as "incentive" used at the end of the tunnels during those dachsie earth dog trials...

Thanks Pamela for the uplifting adoption story. I've been pretty bummed out about those poor dachsies.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/kfrown.gif

We mostly read about the horrible people- but I think for every "bad" story a "good" one should be reported. Thanks to all of you that walk the walk not just talk the talk.

Pamela,

That story is haunting me also. I look at Isobel and think . . .. then I want to take a sledgehammer to those two guys. How could anyone do something so horrible and so "planned" ?

Anyway, your story about Slinky and Zoe was just the antidote needed to push those other images away. I can just picture little wieners playing and having fun and the smile in that new dachsie mom's eyes.

Thanks for the new imagery!
