The Wyoming dogs have been heavy on my mind since the notices were posted yesterday. I've had some trouble, as I bet many of you have, clearing those images from my head. I've had a couple of moments when tears started out of the blue, and moments of pure rage, when I imagined how nice it would be to have those men suffer in the same way the dogs did. Not very humane thoughts, I know, but there you have it. Such cruelty is so beyond reason or sanity that the only possible response seems to be raw emotion.
Now comes the posting about the basset and bulldog puppy mill. More horrible images, more unimaginable cruelty, more vicious subhumans who will go unpunished.
So I thought I would share with you my happy afternoon. I went back to a home I had approved for a dachsie adoption, to see the new rescued dog and have the new mom sign the DRNA contract. This was a happy time. Cathy had already adopted Slinky (I posted about this earlier), a little red dachsie who had been kept by neighbors of hers who didn't want her. Now Slinky has a sister, Zoe, an absolutely adorable 14-pound black and tan smooth. Mostly black--her kiss marks are almost nonexistent.
I walked into the house, dachsies swirling around my feet. Zoe, in her brand new bright blue collar, looked as if she had lived in this house her whole life. But in fact, she was found wandering by the railroad tracks a few weeks back, and no one inquired about her or claimed her. Probably a drop. Within minutes, Zoe was rolling on top of her Kong and Slinky was rolling on top of her squeaky ball, and Cathy was saying she wanted more. More rescued dachsies!
This was an excellent antidote to all the sadness of the past couple of days. We have to keep remembering the big-hearted people who take these abandoned dogs in and give them secure, loving homes.
Also, I wanted to say how proud I am of this board, where people don't just moan about how awful people can be, but actually DO something about it. I'm so happy to be one of you! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
