Hi Everyone :)
I'm new here and am very desperate for help and advise :(
My dog was hit by a car a week ago tommorow...His Pelvis was knocked off his spine and there is swelling and inflamation...also he is not able to stand and support himself , so I have been instructed by my vet to use a towel for support for his back limbs...the outlook right now is uncertain...and I am so depressed and upset for my little fellow...He is in good spirits and trys his best to stand but cannot do so as there is still swelling and the nerves are still not working (if ever) in his paws (hind paws) Has anyone here ever been through this and if you have ...Can you please give me some advise on therapy for him and any other piece of advise that you may have....Thank you so much for listening to me...as right now I feel like a blathering idiot !! :crying:
Very Sad in Pennsylvania :(

You poor thing! I don't blame you one bit for being upset- I think I might lose it under those conditions. :tears:
I'm so sorry that you and your dog are going through this- it's definitely not an easy situation. I'm a little surprised, though- although I've never had experiences with back problems before- many board members have, and strict crate rest is almost ALWAYS prescribed. Are you only using the towel support for his potty trips? Is he otherwise still?
It's a very quiet night on the board tonight- I'm sure you'll have more posts later on this weekend. I wish I had advice for you- but I'll certainly offer you and your dog my best get well wishes.
I'm so sorry such tough times brought you to the board- but I'm glad you found us.

I am so sorry to hear of your little one's accident :(
I have no experience with an injury of this type, and the only thing I could suggest is to follow your vet's advice.
It is good that he is still in good spirits :)
Around here, we send Dachsie Healing Rayz :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: to Puppers and Humans that need them!
Keep us posted on his condition, and remember that we are always here if you need to 'talk'
By the way, Welcome to the best Dachshie Board!
The injury sounds serious and we highly recommend that you get him to a specialist (neurologist) ASAP. If there is a Vet Teaching Hospital near you . . . even better.
Please . . . please . . . get him to a specialist.
Many DBB Healing RAYZ to your pupper :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

I haven't had this experience either.
It could be that the pelvis injury does not require crate rest since it is not a damaged disk putting pressure on the spine (a progressive disease) - and the vet is wanting you to start rehab instead to regain as much function as possible (?) but it wouldn't hurt to ask the vet...
Is it Yolanda's Sassy that experienced a pelvis injury??
Either way, there are many dachshunds who have been paralyzed and regained function, so there is hope! You might look at Dodger's List website
http://www.dodgerslist.com/ which is a resource for owners whose dachshunds have had back problems.
Best wishes to you and your little one.

First, welcome to DBB. I am sorry you came here under such unfortunate circumstances. Normally strict crate rest is prescribed. I had a young foster who had been hit by a car and he had to be crated for 6 weeks and carried outside to go to the bathroom. He was also on steroids to reduce inflamation as well as antibiotics following surgery to repair the damage to the pelvis (very similar to your dog's injuries). Rocky recovered fully. When I was growing up about 40 years ago and my mother's dachshund had back problems, the vet did suggest that my mother use a towel to support Meine when she went out to the bathroom and later for exercise in the yard. She did recover, but it took many months. There is so much more information now, but without seeing the x-rays and knowing the situation, I would not attempt to second guess the your vet. I would ask for a second opinion from a specialist. Even if he does not regain use of the legs there are carts that are available and many dogs do quite well with them. And oh yes, we are sending lots of those healing dachsie rays!

I am sorry, I do not have much advice, except to suggest strict crate rest. Feed him in the crate, and provide water, and let him out every 3-4 hours to potty. But keep the crate in an active, family area where everyone is gathered. Dogs in general are very social animals and require sompanionship and love. Give him lots of eye contact, smiles, and tell him what a good boy he is. This will help keep his spirits up. I think this is probably the best you can do right now.

Hi and welcome to DBB
:( I'm so sorry to hear about your little pupper. You have been given excellent advice. I recently adopted a Dachsie that has had a broken pelvis, her caregiver said it took her over a month to recover. The Dodgerslist is an excellent source of info. Please seek a specialist for a second opinion.
Sending your furbaby healing rayz :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: for a successful recovery.
I copied this off an animal surgeons list in Philadelphia, Dr. Sheldon A. Steinberg Tele# 215-898-3344 and Dr. Charles H. Vite sorry I could not find a number for Dr. Vite. Also here is the URL for the teaching hospital. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Welcome to DBB! I'm so sorry to hear about your problems. I agree with Mark, please take him to see a neurologist. This is a specialized problem that may be out of the scope of your regular veterinarian.
Anyone know of a good neurologist in PA area? Or a teaching hospital?

Sorry to hear about the accident but welcome to the board. I too would suggest consulting a good neurologist. They can then suggest a course of treatment that will give the best odds for a full recovery.
Good luck and sending rays.

I totally agree with advice to see a specialist immediately. Neurological damage can be devastating and long term, if not permanent. I think it's imperative to get the opinion and treatment advice of a specialist ASAP. You and your doxie will be in my prayers. Barbara:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:
