WE HAVE A NEW FAMILY MEMBER NAME BARKLEY WHO IS ONLY 81/2 WEEKS OLD. I WAS TOLD BY THE PET STORE THAT HE ONLY NEEDS 1/4 CUP OF FOOD 2X A DAY. HE STILL SEEMS HUNGRY AFTER HE EATS. HE GETS FED BTW. 7-8A.M. AND 5-6P.M. I KNOW THE CONSEQUENCES OF DACHSHUNDS BEING OVERFED, BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE HE IS GETTING THE RIGHT AMT. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Puppies that young really ought to eat 3-4 times a day, not just twice. I got Rudy at nearly five months old and he had just been cut back to two feedings a day. Since he was 20 weeks old he has eaten at least a cup of food a day (divided into meals). He is now full grown and he is not overweight at all at right under 10lbs. He is active and very muscular so i have continued to feed him a cup or so a day with no weight gain. I'm not sure how much to feed an 8 week old pup, but maybe someone else will.

My suggestions are try feeding more often and a baby carrot here and there is a good healthy snack to fill their tummies, but add no fat.

Hiya doodles

I got all 8 of my pups as babies under 12wks actually most around 8wks and one at 4wks...hehe
When my guy were small (some still are) i would give them about 1/4 cup 3 times per day about 8am, 12pm and around 5pm kinda like breakfast lunch and dinner http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif None of them are over weight all under 12lbs and my 2 little ones are doing good and gainning right on scedule. I feed science diet lamb and rice in conjunction with a all natural mixture that u can find at this link below... good luck with your new pup http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gifhttp://www.barfdiet.com/

When I got Punkin, our vet suggested small meals 3-4 times a day. As she grew we fed her 1/4 cup of dog food 3 times a day. That's what we feed Josephine now (she's 11). We feed Solid Gold with the Sea Meal and I can tell a big difference in her coat. The BARF diet is excellent too so check out that site.

Hi, Doodles!

I don't want to alarm you, but young pups NEED to feed at least 3-4 times a day. If they don't they can get sugar imbalances and eventually go lethargic, hard to wake up.

When Wo was a little guy he always had a few soft kibs and fresh water available at all times. At 4 months he could eat 2X daily and not suffer. When the babies are growing it's ok to feed them. Wotan is 2 and a half now and he's started to slow down this last half year-so now I watch the treats.

good luck Sonja
