I know this is a problem fe wof us have....fattening up a dachsie. We ourselves have Henry on a diet and Jakey is just about right. But, our foster, Dash, could really use some more weight. His poor little hip bones poke out of his bum and he is skinny. I would like to add some weight quickly because he seems uncomfortable. Does anyone know a good way to add weight to a dachsie? i don't want to get him started on any bad habits...i.e. people food, sugary treats, or anything of the like, but I thin k he needs something more than just kibble and the treats the boys get (i.e. baby carrots). Can anyone give me some advice?

Thanks a lot,
mandy

Hi Mandy

When we had our foster Cassie the vet said she needed to put on some weight (we thought she might be preggers) her hip bones stuck out too and you could see her ribs somewhat. I went to the acme heath board and a couple ppl suggested i try a recipe called Satin Balls it really works i substituted the oil with flaxseed oil and sometimes the beef with chicken. Here is the recipe they sent me you can modify some and get the same results. This recipe makes ALOT!

Satin Balls

10 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind lots of fat]
1 lg. box of Total cereal [or comparable natural brand]
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup veg oil (sub. flaxseed oil)
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf
I also added a multi-vitamen powder to it. Others say they have added Missing Link and gotten good results.

Good Luck

Jen,

Thanks for the recipe. Did it work for Cassie? I may try cutting the recipe in half so that I don't have 10 pounds of this in my fridge, but anything is worth a try.

Dash is such a sweety and just needs love and care. I do have to say that he has the softest fur I have ever felt on a dachshund (and that includes puppies). He needs to gain between 1 and 2 pounds (I'm guessing). he's pretty thin and our vet told us to get some more weight on him.

Yes it worked well she started putting on weight after about a week and looked much better her coat got shiny. Just keep it away from your other dogs or you will have a house full of chubby weenies...lol http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
