I just bought some marrow bones for the first time. I'm a little nervous about it. Does anyone here feed them?

I haven't tried marrow bones yet but they shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't cook them. Also, I think they're considered too hard to be a food source although they are popular 'recreational' bones. Some dogs might get the runs the first few times because the marrow is too rich for them in they get too much of it.

Tucker's Mom

I just gave one to Tucker last night. Kind of a Valentine's Day treat.
I give them raw (frozen too) and let him chew on it for a couple hours. I supervise him the entire time. He usually gets one about once a week. They are really good for helping keep their teeth pearly white. He has never had any loose stools, but our Beagle did the first couple times.
It may sound messy but this is what I do. I have an old rummage sale blanket that I cover our love seat with, then I put Tucker on the love seat an give him his marrow bone. He has learned to stay on the blanket to do his chewing. I sit on the regular couch and let him chew in peace. After a couple hours I take the bone away and throw it in the garbage. The blanket goes in the washer and everyone's happy. He now knows when the blue blankie comes out....he's gonna get a treat!
Good luck, start off slow, make sure the bone is big enough so that Oscar can't get the whole thing in his mouth, and see how he does.

The bones are big compared to Oscar's size. I like the idea of the special blanket, I think I'll try that. I'm going to give one Oscar a bone this weekend. I'm sure he'll love it.

I clear the blankets out of Aug's crate and he chows down in there. When he is done, clorox wipes to the rescue and the blankets go back in.
Aug can't get enough bones!

One more question on marrow bones, after he's eaten off all the stuff and its just the bone, can I leave the bone out for him? He still seems like chewing on it and pushing it around the house.

As long as all the meat and stuff is off the bone so it don't ruin carpet or other things (aug hides bones very well), let him go to town.
