Last night when my mom was doing dishes, she tripped over Danny and for the rest of that night he wouldn't move off of my mom's lap (I thought he was just being a suck up like usual) and he yelped when you touched him. Everyone thoguht it was his leg because he was limping a little bit and we decided to wait til the morning to see if he was better. Whn i woke up this morning my mom phoned and sounded really upset and said that Danny was in the hospital. My mom was almost crying and i almost wanted to cry because he can't do almost anything for 3 months. We have to crate him when we can't watch him and he can't play fetch or any of the fun stuff for a while. PLease send rays for Danny :rayz: :rayz:

Wow, poor guy, lots of rays coming his way :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: . I'm no expert, but from what I've read here on the board, crate rest works wonders. I'm sure someone else can tell you more.

Welcome to the board, I'm sure you'll find lots of interesting advice here.

I am so sorry for Danny. You didn't say what exactly the diagnosis was. Sending rays for Danny. :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

Welcome to DBB, Scottyguy and Danny. :waving: :waving: I'm sorry that we are welcoming you at such a bad time. Maybe your mother can come online, too. :)

Oh! That must be so rough on your family. :(

Don't let mom be too hard on herself- these guys just LOVE to get underfoot. Accidents do happen, and dachshunds are just predisposed for back trouble.

Crate rest really does sound VERY tough- but it's also very, very important to follow STRICTLY. We've had members with great success after all those months of trying to keep their dogs still. The work and frustration is WORTH it!

Rayz? You BET! :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

Welcome to the DBB, Scottyguy- please keep us updated on Danny's condition!

We still don't know the diagnosis yet. The vet is taking x-rays and all that stuff and will phone us sometime today.

One minute everything is normal and the next, it all changes in the blink of an eye. I'm sending healing rays for Danny and your mom. It seems that crate rest has worked for many of the doxies on this board - hope it works for Danny too! Barbara:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

The vet phoned and said that it was an accident waiting to happen. The vet said that he has had a bad back for a while, shown on the x-rays. The vet is putting Danny on a medication called Phen..., i don't remember the name but it is a steroid anti-inflammatory thing. My mom is just worried that the steroid will make him fat after the 3 months is over. He doesn't need surgery so hopefully he will be better soon

I am glad that Danny doesn't need surgery. Using Prednisone or one of the other steroids really helps and crate rest works wonders! You do have to be tough and stick to it, but I have seen it work on my foster Peppy! He went from not being able to move to walking without a limp.

Hopefully Danny will make a full recovery with the steroids and crate rest.

:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: to Danny and all your family!

Please keep us posted, and remember that we are here if you need us!

The Pred will help along with crate rest. Our Gretel is on her 4th day of Pred after having a back flare up on Thursday, she is doing okay. As for getting fat remember not to over feed you may need to cut back a little. Danny will be crate resting with very little exercise. Just like people if you are confined to a bed with little or no exercise you do not want to over eat or you will get fat.
Possible side effects from Prednisone, increased water drinking, urination and appetite.

Sending healing rayz for this little guy to feel better soon. :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

I'm so sorry! I'm sure Danny doesn't understand why daddy is being mean and making him stay in the box all the time. Be sure to explain it to him so he understands. Yes, they listen. And at least it was good new! No surgery! I hope he does well, sending lots of rayz!

I'm glad that you'll be able to do home care, rather than an operation. Sending more rays. :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

so sorry to hear about this issue with his back.
Just remember the best thing is strict crate rest. The steroids will give him a false sense of feeling much better. It masks the pain.
Dont let that fool you.
Please keep us updated.

I'm so sorry to hear about Danny back problems. Crate rest can work wonders. I've had two seniors (one 14 and one 15) who developed back problems and crate rest worked for both of them. The 14 year old was completely down (paralyzed). I'm sure that Danny will be fine after his crate rest is completed. The hard part is sticking to it. After a couple weeks he'll start feeling better and want to get out and around. That's when you'll need to be tough.

Glad to hear he is a good candidate for the conservative treatment. Just make sure you follow the vet's instruction on crate rest and how to tapper on the drugs. Once the steroids have been started you can't just stop giving them the animal has to be weened off of the drug.

Good luck, I'm sending rays and will be looking for updates.

Glad the vet can treat Danny conservatively. How old is Danny? Does he rest pretty quietly? Since I've never had to crate a dog (hopefully never will) I wonder how other members help them to stay quiet without a lot of complaining. Does music help? Extra toys? Kongs? Barbara

Danny came home today! He seems to be ok, though he is little bit wobbly in the back end he's not in pain but he has been really hungry and sleepy since he didn't do either at the vet. After the 3 months we have to change our lifestyle a little bit, we have to carry him up and down stairs and he is not allowed to jump up onto anything ever again.

Danny is only 2 years old. He still seems to think he is normal. The first thing he wanted to do when he got home was grab one of his toys and play fetch.

The drug is called Prednisone by the way.

Peppy was just under 2 and crate rest and prednisone worked wonders! We will keep sending rays. When he decides that he is well and wants out of the crate... you will need them!

But as others have said and gone through themselves crate rest can and will work wonders. I am so glad that he doesn't need surgery. I have had dogs that have been on the crate rest and then back to running and playing afterward.
My oldest girl Ivy just had a bought with a back problem and she is doing wonderful right now. So it does work and it is worth saying "NO" when you get the sad looks. We even had to watch afterward how much she could ride in the car. If it was going any distance she didn't do well if it was more than half and hour drive.
We also did use a chiropractor and had a few treatments. You wouldn't believe the difference right away. Today at the bark park she even was doing her Happy Prance!
So hang tuff and will send some healing rayz your way.
:rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:
and some loving too. :muchlove:

is home.
Now, comes the hard part of being firm and not letting him convince you he is alright and dont need the crate.
Be firm and strong and he will be fine.

I"m glad Danny's doing better and is home with you. As others have said the hard part comes when they get to feeling better and want to get out and play. Be tough!
