View Full Version : Baxter
We lost our Baxter. We had to have him put to sleep yesterday due to heart failure. As painful as this is, at least we know that he had a long wonderful life(14YRS.) and is with his brother Squiggy romping and playing and no longer suffering. We also know that we will see them again someday.
Auggie, our youngest dachsie is running all over the house looking for Baxter. It is hard to believe that two year old Auggie bonded so closely with a 14 year old. When we adopted the young guy, we were afraid he'd possibly drive Baxter nuts. It was just the opposite. Baxter was his teacher and showed him the ropes. He taught him that if you wanted more treats, you really could wait out mom and dad. They would eventually give in. An extra whine or two really does work! Baxter was just happy to have a friend after Squiggy passed. It's as if Baxter stuck around long enough to make Auggie feel comfortable and to teach him a few things. But, his body gave out and he was ready to be with his brother. I think that Auggie feels like he lost his security blanket.
Now we are left sad but with fantastic memories. I wish all people knew how their lives could be enhanced by these wonderful and devilish little creatures. They give everything to you.

I am so sorry for your loss. It doesn't matter how long or short you have with your furkids. Once they get into our hearts.... the are there forever. I still remember the pics of your crew and them with your family.
Give Auggie an extra hug from me tonight... and shoot me an email if you need to chat...

Lena - my sympathies to you and your family on the loss of Baxter. A smile came to my face as you described him teaching Auggie "the ropes"! I hope you will think of him at the Bridge, romping and playing with our furkids who have gone on before! Julia B.

It's so sad to hear about the loss of such a beloved dog. 14 years, 18, 20- it's never a long enough life for the ones we love. I'm sure Squiggy and Baxter are having a ball together, though- and surely watching over you!

We're so sorry to hear about Baxter . . . our sincere sympathies.
We know it's hard, but try to remember all the years of good things and that he is romping at the Bridge, waiting for you.
Meanwhile if you need us we are all right here with and for you.

It's never easy to say goodby. We can all only hope that we have so many good years with our little ones. Auggie and you will help each other get through. Some day when the time is right for all perhaps auggie will have a new companion to get in trouble with.

I'm so sorry to hear about Baxter, but I know he is now restored to health and playing with Stinker and the other babies at the bridge. Tess was lost without her big sister/mom, but she has now bonded with her baby brother Will'em. May you have many wonderful memories of Baxter as the years pass.

But at least he will be able to play again and see his old buddy.
It never is easy no matter how long we have had them or what shape they are in. It is so sad to know that Auggie is trying to find him. But hopefully together you can share your grief with him. Another dog can't replace that special way each of them have. But at least Auggie can cuddle with you and give you some loving for his older Buddy.
Sending some prayers your way along with a few Hugs to.
