Hi All,

I am going to change Maximus to an all natural diet. I really like the BARF information I've read, but I don't have the time to mix and grind all of it up. Has anyone used or have knowledge of Home Made 4 Life? It is supposed to be pre-ground and mixed BARF? How does it compare to FRR? I have been contemplating that brand also.

Hmmm.... I'd need to see the ingredients list. Do they have a website you can post for me? I base Owen's raw diet on Steve's Real Food http://www.realdogfood.com/ Which is the ground up meat, bone, veggies and supplements, frozen into cubes and Owen does great on it. I also stretch it (it's a bit pricy) by picking up fresh chicken necks and backs and tossing two his way with a meal. The necks and backs are his favorite part

I personally don't compare raw feeding to kibble. I can compare raw to raw, or kibble to kibble, but you're talking about two totally different systems of feeding, different enzymes absorbed, etc.

I hope that helps a little. If you can post their site, I'll try to comment on the food.

http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/dizzy.gifAmy.....I have been desperately trying to find the post that you made a week or so ago. You were replying to a gentleman and gave alot of food links. It was great!!! I went to all of the links and found what sounded to me like a good food.

I am a new dachsie mom....and until I joined this board, I didn't have a clue. I have learned,..and continue to do so! I believe the site you spoke of was http://members.home.net/mstraus/ (I wrote it down). Sorry I'm no good at the links yet. It's under frozen BARF.

Thanks Tons for Your help,

Thanks Mark.....I checked the site again. This food looks pretty good to me, but I'm just learning here. Does anyone have an opinion on it? How does it compare to FRR nutritionally? Thanks for your help!

To compare raw and kibble is like comparing apples to oranges. For Kibble, FRR is a great, high end, human grade ingredient kibble and I've actually fed it before I decided to feed Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. I want to campare the two (Raw vs FRR), but I can't. I, through reading Kymythy Schultz book and meeting other dachsie parents who feed raw, am convinced that you can only get the best nutrition through feeding raw. BUT, you have to have the time and commitment to do it right. Balancing Calcium to meat ratio, supplementing etc. If you don't have that time, the next best thing (In my mind) is to feed a quality kibble like FRR, Innova, Ca. Natural, Pinnacle, Canidae etc.

Yes...that helps alot Amy! I really want to do the frozen BARF, but now I'm worried that I don't know enough about the suppliments. I've read posts on them here, but it is all still so confusing. Maybe I should take your advise and feed the high quality kibble until I learn more. So....if I just fed the Home Made 4 Life, Max wouldn't get all the nutrients he needs? Wow....who would ever have thought? Dogs all over the world must not be getting the nutrients they need!

Actually, I think that the HomeMade 4 Life diet if well balanced with the proper supplements. Much like Steve's Raw Food. When I build Owen's diet from scratch, I need to be very careful as to supplementing with the proper trace minerals, calcium etc. But a prepackaged diet like Steve's and Homemade 4 Life are already balanced.

I'd highly suggest you read Kymathy Schultz' Book. I can't think of the name right now, but I'll find it and post it for you. It is an easy read and full of excellent information on feeding a natural diet. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

It's called Natural Nutrition for Dog's and Cats. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/chatter.gif
