View Full Version : Is this a dachsie thing??
Owen's Mom

Owen like to play fetch with toys and tennis balls (what dachsie doesn't?) what he does with his toy makes no sense to me though. If there is a blanket around, he'll run over to the blanket with the toy and bury the toy in the blanket, then frantically try to dig it out. Is my precious little dog a nut? Or do other little dachsies do this?

Rudy and Roscoe do it too, Roscoe more than Rudy. Silly dachsies. Their comforter is getting holes in it from them doing it so vigorously.
Its not just Owen, but maybe it is just our three boys that do it.

It's definitely not Owen...that is one of Mickey's favorite past times. It's very hard for him to stay focused during a game of catch, because he always finds something to hide his ball under and dig at it. We've got a big fluffy dog pillow which is his favorite. He'll hide the toy, then dig, dig, dig. Then he'll pull the pillow over to hide it again and then dig, dig, dig. He can make a game of this for HOURS!!!
When he's over at my parent's, they comment how he pulls blankets off the sofas, pillows off beds...anything....he uses anything he can pull around to play the hide and dig game. Their house looks like a bomb hit it by the time Mickey leaves...http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Good to know Owen isn't the only goofy dachsie that does that! He'll even try to bury his ball in leaves and then dig it out, spitting out leave pieces in the process

Oscar does the same thing. He has has a blue blanket and I'm constantly finding little blue fuzzies around the house because of this.

Omar does this too! Also he loves when I do laundry. He is constantly putting the ball in the dryer when I open the door and he love to put the ball in the clean pile when I am folding. It seems dachshunds make a game out of anything.

Ginger does the same thing. She has a whole ball/fetch routine. She brings the ball, I throw it, she fetches it finds a blanket (any will do ) tosses it like crazy into and out of the blanket, back to beginninghttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

Ive mentioned this before on other Guy-Guy is BALL CRAZY We have a very hard light green and pink ball he plays with if we used a tennis ball he would Kill it.We call them the Clunk A Clunk Balls he bites so hard on them that is the sound they make. They are the size of a hard ball we have a bigger one made by the same Co. but he will have nothing to do with it.So his Aunt Sallie gets to roll on it that is her thing just to roll on it and shove it in a Afgan and roll some more.We fell like we have the wire fox terrier in the Dr.Dolittle movie with Eddie Murphy all we do is "just throw the damn ball"

Just seeing this Amy.
Dukey does this everey nite I come home. He grabs a toy, play growls, and hops on the bed where their blanket is. He hides the toy, growls and starts digging! He is a nut.
He does this every nite though, Owen isn't alone in this!

Owen is normal and is a typical DACHSIE! Freddie gets his toys all wrapped and tangled in his blankie and frantically tries to dig em out! He gets SO flustered that he growls and makes this high-pitch bark. He'll keep looking over at me as to say "Well Mom, don't just stand there, HELP me!" It's too hilarious! Gotta love em!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Timber

When you say fetch, does Owen actually bring the toy back to you. Timber will get the toy after I throw it, but he won't bring it back!
Whenever Timber has a toy, he will often drop it so it will fall off the bed, couch, chair, etc. Then he looks at you as if to say, "Well, are you going to get it for me?"

Aug only burries treat, crunchy or chewy ones. Toys, never.
I am just getting him to bring stuff back after I throw it. But, he will only bring it back if there is a treat involved!

Tiffany, Annie does the same thing Timber does. She'll deliberately nose her toy off the sofa and then bark sharply at me, like "Mom! Fetch the bone!" (I'm usually pretty good at it.)

Mitzi is very good at bringing back anything you throw for her to fetch. In fact to start the game she'll bring whatever she has and nose my hand with it until I take it and throw it. She has done this from the fist month I had her. She is self taught. Such a smart girl. But she also drops her red bear off the sofa and looks at me like I did it and now I have to pick it up.

Maximus is 3 months old now and he has been fetching since we got him at 6 weeks. He is soooo smart. Yesterday was such a nice day, I took him for his first walk on a leash. He was hilarious when he hit the end of the leash for the first time he did a complete back flip and got up with grass on his head and shoulder. He gave me that look like what the heck was that
