Since I hope to be adopting soon, I'm wondering those of you that have more then one dachsie when you buy new toys, do you have to give them both something? Oscar is a little possessive when something new is introduced. Also, should I get some new toys for the new guy, so he will have things that doesn't have Oscars scent on them? Thank goodness Jen posted about www.dollarpets.com (http://www.dollarpets.com) !

Since Jake came to our house, we started buying two of everything. If one goes to the vet, they all go to the vet. If one has a birthday, they rest have a special non-birthday. If one gets a treat, they all get a treat....You get the idea.

We didn't buy jakey his own special toys when he came home the first time. But after he did arive, we started to buy two of everything.

We buy one of each thing for each dachsie! We buy two similar things - one for Henry and one for Jake most of the time. For instance, if we buy them ducks (they love the "worth" families), Henry gets a white duck and Jake gets a yellow duck. Or we buy them absolutely the same thing.

Of course...there are still some upsets. henry goes off with his new toy...and Jake thinks that there must be something special about that toy...so he drops his and goes to look at Henry's....

Typical kid stuff! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Our guys share most everything....but Jake is not allowed to touch Henry's baby. He stole Hen's baby once and took the stuffing out - Henry totally ignored him for a week!

And be prepared for a divided household. Henry is a toy lover. Jake is a toy killer.

I almost always but something for each boy. IF it's chewies I'm buying then they are identical. I too have a toy lover and a toy killer. It can make for a sad house when you have mixed toy attitudes like that. Last week I made the mistake of buying Frank a new tennis ball at Pet Smart and not getting Tanner a new toy. I didn't make a big point of it being a new ball just kind of introduced it the other night while playing. Frank thought it was great he loves to chase the ball down the hall then bring it back to me. Tanner won't generally have much to do with a ball but the next evening he located that new ball and managed to split it in half. I sometimes think I should rename Tanner jaws. He is the smaller of the two boys Frank is a standard about 17.5# and tanner is a tweenie at 13# but what a jaw on that boy. He will finish off an 8" bullie in under 15 minutes. The same time range for a peanut bone. In that same time Frank is barely getting started on his.

Good luck,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

No, all the toys are community toys for our three. However, like Tom, if it's a chewy or the like . . . everyone gets one just alike (well except for size for Top Spin). These three compete for the toys if it's a fetch game, but do not fight or get jealous over them . . . just the chewies or treats.

Even when a new member came to the family . . . toys were never an issue.

But to answer your question . . . in the case where we actually do get a NEW toy, we get three that are not necessarily alike. Fair is fair! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

This is one subject I can definitely relate to. I have been owned by dachshunds for over 20 years. They seem to want the toy or chew (especially the chew) that the other one has!! My living room looks like Petsmart exploded. I let them have at it and chew and play with everyone's property. After a while, everything "smells" the same and usually they graciously share with each other. This can change from day to day and I still have to watch them closely when they are playing with toys. Our guys share EVERYTHING. Although they each have their favorite things. Sassie loves the fleece toys and Sunni likes sqeekies BUT they ALL love Chewies so i make sure i have about a million at all times.
DollarPets has come in handy ALOT already http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif I bought about 15 of the fleece bones and LOTS of pig ears and squeekies http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

We have a one year old female and all in all she's pretty good with her toys but, when my mother-in-laws dachsie(my Mandy's littermate)and my aunt-in-laws dachsie come to visit, watch out. I buy chew toys by the threes and any rawhides or bones are bought by the bagful. Even though they all get one. They all want the exact same one(bone or rawhide, they play together with the toys pretty good). Usually Daisy(my mother-in-laws dog) takes all three items and lays on two while chewing the other and then the other two start barking at her and when the attempt to reclaim their property she snaps at them . Needless to say we don't give them rawhides when they are all together.

I don't have two Dachsies but I have a dachsie and a yorkie. The dachsie, Tutts, takes all of the yorkie's toys and they fight/tease eachother with them. Althought we buy one toy for each of them they always want thier own toy as well as the others.
