View Full Version : Indestructable Toys? Another survey du jour!

Are there any toys that anyone recommends that are relatively indestructable. Willi loves to chew but I don't like giving him rawhide or booda bones (he eats the WHOLE thing in a matter or hours). I have a bunch of stuffed toys but they need major surgery so those are no good either. What do you guys give your "little chompers" to play with?

Their is a "chew toy" named (or made by?) Galileo which, depending on what size you get, lasts a month or more. They are able to chew it down, but does not ever break off in chunks. Our 2 girls will chew them for hours on end when their in their "chew mode". I don't remember off the top of my head what it's made of, but it works well.

It's all about the Black Kong in my house. Owen chewed through the red one (go to www.kongcompany.com (http://www.kongcompany.com) for more info), though it did take a couple of months. I like to stuff it with cookies, kibble, peanut butter... the list goes on and on /ubb/smilies/rolleyes.gif and he'll just chew on it plain. I think that it's the greatest thing ever created!! The black one is kind of big, but Owen seems to have no problem throwing it around!! /ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Hope that helps!

Indestuctible toys......well, the Kong is the closest I think....

Amy's right..go for the black one. I know, the red says it is for smaller dogs, but come on...beside physically, nothing about the dachsund is small and they can chew practically anything. Our guys love to have peanut butter in them. Because they can't break pieces off, the kong makes for a good activity while we are gone. And with peanut butter in it...../ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif Also, because of the funny shape, they bounce in different directions, adding more fun to it.

It all depends on the dog. Both our guys can tear up stuffed animals. Henry lets them last a while. And do not touch his beloved lambikins (lamb's wool toy). That is his baby and he would never even think of ripping her up. Jakey on the other hand....stuffed toys are the enemy and Jakey will destroy.

I WISH Dolly would do kongs. Oh, she WILL, but ONLY IF they have food in them. Once she gets the treat out, she's done with it. Now I do have one of those braided ropey things...I can't remember what they're called. Dolly will occassionally get in a chew mode with that. The only thing you've gotta watch with that is that they don't just chew on the ends where it's stringy and start pulling the strings out. We also have several flattened plushies around where the girls have taken all the innards out and left a shell of a plushie. Quite the skillful surgeons they are.

Sandi,
Jam a piece of hotdog into that kongball. It works for Wotan and he can't get that dog out until we get it out for him. He can stay entertained this way for as long as the meat's in there. So far he's never gotten it out by himself.

The other nite we had ribsteaks and Wo got his bone. Good thing that I never leave him alone with a bone or chew. He got a piece of the bone stuck onto his back molars and was freaking out. It was really jammed and took me wedging and yanking on his head to set him free of it. /ubb/smilies/uh-oh.gif

Thank you guys soooooo much for all of your suggestions. I went to PetSmart yesterday and bought Willi a Black Kong, A dental nylabone, and a new H2O ball that is relatively indestructable. Although he started chewing pieces off of the dental nylabone with in the first ten minutes, he loooooves his new Kong. I stuffed it this morning and he has been trying to unstuff it ever since. /ubb/smilies/ksmile.gif

I am going to try the dental Kong too since he chomped his nylabone.

Thanks again,

Kris /ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

My guys love the hercules bones. They have the added benefit of being bumpy so they help clean teeth. The puppies like their nylabone dental dinosaur. Mr. Stegasaurus has lost his head and tail. Whopper lays on his back and holds him in his paws and chews.

Weenie, you might also try the rolling food cube--I think the brand name is Buster--if your pup has a strong rooting instinct. Peaches loves it; Farfel couldn't care less. It is made of hard plastic with rounded edges (can't be chewed) and has lots of little chambers inside. You drop small pieces of kibble into it, then roll it on the floor. As the dog pushes it around with its nose, the kibble pieces gradually fall out. Peaches will push her cube around until she is exhausted--she just loves it!

Today I bought the wieners two very destructible toys--I couldn't resist after my neighbor showed me the one he'd bought for his dog. They're little stuffed animals, but instead of squeakers inside, they have some kind of computer chip that makes the noise the animal would make. I got two piggies for my two (Alan had an elephant that really trumpeted!), and they are berserk for them! They just lie on the floor, clamping their jaws down to make the piggies oink, then run around, tossing them and catching them and stealing each other's. They don't get these toys unless I'm right there with them, but boy--these are the most popular toys I've bought them in a long time!

Wienergal! Distructive is right...
Wotan's Quacky-Ducky didn't get to live long. Once he figured out it screamed when he bit it he killed it pronto, and I was "monitoring" his activity with it. Ha!

His Booda Hedgehog has finally lost his back leg. This morning Wo was running beserk with it wrapped up in a bag, my sock hanging out of his mouth on one side and then he started to gut the poor Booda.

Booda is now in the "hospital" ward (on top of the kitchen cabinet which is definately dachsie climb proof. I'm like you, always on the look out for that perfect toy- but Wotan has had the real thing(woodrats and mice) and I guess everything just comes in second!

Unfortunately my dogs don´t like safe indestructable toys that I bring them from the pet shop. Instead they are waiting for their opportunity to sneak unnoticed into children´s room and find crayons, pencils, Barbie-dolls, Lego-blocks, teddy-bears and other soft plush animals and toy-cars with small rubber tyres. Dirty socks and tennis-shoes are also great and little Princess loves fairy-tale books; perhaps because there are so many princesses in them...But the children are slowly learning not to leave their toys on the floor or in the bed; they must be locked in cupboards or drawers.
The only thing that can beat human toys are real bones, but I take them away as soon as they seem to get some pieces out of them. It must be due to the dachsies´guardian angel that we have not needed any intestinal surgery so far.

Yes, Tina! Your babies must be protected by Saint Dachshund, patron saint of dachsies. Those three seem to get into more trouble than the kids!

How's your neighbor with the chickens? Are you still sneaking hen-dinners in the middle of the night thanks to your huntress? /ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

There is a set of toys that are virtually indestructible by BELGIAN TERVUREN STANDARDS (*****- five pawprints!) They are called Tire Biters. They are made from tire rubber or something similar.

You might also check into Schutzhund toys. There's one that's burlap with a sqeekie inside, & a strap for throwing. But take note of the size, since most are designed for large dogs.

Bailey loves to play ball. Recently bought her a toy ball called "wiggly Giggly". It's very sturdy and makes noises as she knocks it about. Petco carries them. Bailey enjoyed hers so much, the neighbor bought one for her dog. Also can be ordered from www.drsfosterandsmith, (http://www.drsfosterandsmith,) I think that's the correct website.

The wiggly giggly ball is SO cute!! However... It's far from indestructible. Owen made holes in his withing the first hour he had it. It was a crack up though. I love the sound it makes!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Well Penny's Aunt, big dog toy or not Wotan killed the squeaker in the burlap monkey the first 12 mins he had it. That boy has super jaws for his size...

I guess I never learn. I buy him at least 1 newbie toy every 3 weeks. Our living room looks like a ball, stuffed toy and sock graveyard. Purina sent Wo a tennis ball- one of those with no dye and less abrasive shell. He doesn't seem to want it much.

So far Buddy's favorite toy is the cats. First it was Max and now that we got a new kitten, he and Midnight have become wrestling buddies. He hides pretty much all his other toys. I think he likes to watch me search the house for his stash of toys.

Bailey has a large wicker heart basket that we keep her toys in. She's able to get in and select what she wants to play with. I swear she sometimes puts her toys back in her toybasket. What a good girl. I know she's just being on her best behavior until we're hooked as though we aren't already.

My Bailey loves his toys, too! If he runs to his room, you know he's gone to get one of his favorites for you to play "keep the toy away from Bailey!!" If you ignore him, he'll come right up to you with the toy in his mouth and growl to get your attention. As soon as you look at him, he takes off running! He's soooo funny! His favorite is a big, red stuffed smiley face. I haven't found a squeaky toy yet that he doesn't destroy the squeaker the first day. My husband brought home a "kong toy" for him one day and I really didn't think he would play with it but he literally threw that thing around the room. I don't know what the attraction is about the kongs but they are as close to indestructable as you can get.

Hi all, thought I'd share my new find as far as toys go. Usually squeakie toys require surgery after a short time. If the squeaker isn't dead then the guts need to placed back into the toy then sewn up. Well, I was sent this purple dinosaur with a squeakie in it and it's been 3 months of always being played with by Fred and Abbie. No surgery needed--still intact--surprized me!!! The toy is made by plush puppies. Just thought I'd pass this along.

Well after reading, I think I'm going to go out and buy Austin a Kong toy on my way home from work. I'm always trying to find him something new and interesting that he will play with and that he won't "kill" within a matter of hours. At christmas we must have spent a small fortune on toys for him to see what would hold up the best. I got numerous burlap squeaky dolls. Well they didn't last for more than a day or two before they lost an eye, a nose, or an ear and then eventually he went after the arms and legs. He won't let up until he has them completely ripped open. He really seems to like his tennis ball though. He runs around the house doing laps with his tennis ball in his mouth.

I have finally given up on finding any type of toy that Rooby will not destroy within 10 minutes... http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

To be such a sweetie, she is VICIOUS when it comes to her babies... and as she matures, she gets WORSE!

We had friends visiting from NY, so we did all the Texas things... JFK Museum, Southfork Ranch, and ofcourse the Ft. Worth Stockyards. At one of the tourist traps I found the cutest stuffed Armadillo that was bigger than Rooby... it looked so well constructed, with little felt eyes, and not too many protruding parts... Silly me, I was thinking she could snuggle with it... well, it took approx. 5 minutes and there were 'dillo guts everywhere. She's just a monster! We ended up de-stuffing the Armadillo and now it looks like road-kill - flat as a pancake.

I've lost count of all the defenseless animals she's taken out. Currently, they are all in sick bay (top shelf in the utility room)... I can't bring myself to de-stuff all of them, but I guess it's the only solution.

She likes her kong (red) stuffed with peanut butter, but she gets it out so fast it's not much of a challenge for her. Im thinking about the buster cube next... she's quite a finicky eater, so I'm thinking that'll make it more interesting.

Amy - we have gone from Innova which she devoured the first few weeks then lost interest; to California Natural Lamb & Rice... but now she's bored with that also. I'm thinking maybe Flint River is the next choice... or I'll get the cube and make it more of a game for her. I can't do the raw diet thingy you're doing (although it sounds like a great idea and kudos to you for being such a good Mom to the 'O!).

I also make doggie pupcicles out of their kongs i plug the small hole with a little peanut butter then i pour some gravy (any flav.) in there and freeze it in the freezer then i let the dogs out back and toss the kongs on the deck it keeps em busy for hours and cools em off at the same time http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif Hope this helps thought i would share http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Becky Ann loves the toys with the twisted rope stuff coming off of them. I don't remember what they are called but I get them at Pet Smart. She has a tendency to not not chew the stuffed parts, but loves the rope arms and legs of her dollie. It keeps her teeth beautifully white. He doctor told us at the very beginning to get her as many of these toys as she would play with because they are totally digestible (the threads if any should come off) and they whiten the teeth and strengthen the jaw (as if she needs that). Anyway she carries her dollie (and it really is like a little cloth doll sort of with arms, legs, and hair) all over then plops down for a good chew of the arms and legs.

A while back I had gotten Austin one of those dolls with twisted ropes for arms and legs. He absolutely loved it. It actually lasted longer than all of his other toys. But that too eventually he ended up destroying. He would just sit for hours ripping the rope apart until finally the poor doll didn't have any arms or legs. And then he eventually ripped the guts out to the point that I couldn't repair it any longer and it then had to go to dollie heaven.

Shelbie has a little beanbag Elmo that I got just before I got her. She plays with him just about every day. Its very much a love/hate relationship - sometimes she'll lie with her head on him and other times she just gives him a thumping but from extensive "throw two toys in opposite direction andsee which one she goes for" tests Elmo is her favourite.

Someone here had suggested the chocolate nylabones from pets.com. We got a couple and the boys loved them (Don't get the petite because these little guys chew like the big boys). We have some wolfe sized ones on the way. They aren't really chocolate so don't woryy (I even tasted them out of curiosity).

I no longer hold a toy hospital....When stuffed toys get holes...we take all of the stuffing out, leaving the "skin" to be played with. My husband was so tired of walking through stuffing and after he watched me spend a couple of hours doing surgery to have more stuffing on the floor within ten minutes...we finally agreed taht enough was enough....

Roobyrocks, the Buster Cube is GREAT! The only problem I had with it was having to break up the kibble pieces to make them small enough to work in the cube. But now I understand the company is marketing tiny kibs that fit easily inside. Haven't read the ingredients label, though...always on the lookout for that "digest..." http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/sick.gif

Also, folks, Booda has come out with a new line of "Velvet" bones that have gum-massaging bumps all over them. They come in three flavors--Santa Fe chicken (!), peanut butter, and cheeseburger. My dogs LOVE 'em! The only problem is how quickly they go through them--and they're not cheap!! But they have no calories, and my two need to shed a few pounds, so...

My doxies´ motto is "THINK BIG". I´ve finally found them a toy that they liked and were not able to destroy in five minutes and moreover, it is meant for dogs. It is a so called "dummy" which is used to train retrievers to fetch game birds. It is covered with some kind of hemp fabric and my dogs love to rip and chew and shake it and try to steal it from each other. I´m afraid that with that tactics they would not make very good retrievers, though...

With the Olympics on their way this summer I would like to enter the little known "de-squeaking the fleecy bone" speed trials. On Sunday, I got a brand new sheepskin bone shape comforter type thing to replace the other three I have destroyed in my 17 months training. It took just eight minutes of continuous and really quite ear-hurting squeaking to render it completely silent. So, I think I'm ready to join the British team and look forward to wearing my little union jack jacket!! PS Mum took me to the girly pet hairdressers on Monday and now I smell of shampoo when I'd much rather smell of real p.....(that's quite enough of that Shelbie, signed Mum)

What about cricket with real insects? I love to chase spiders...http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/tongue.gif

I too want to enter your olympic trials of "kill the sqeak toy" challenge. YOU may be the British athelete, but I am one of the many talented US contenders. Hip-Hip-Hoorah!

Owen can run in the races. He's a professional having run in the Weenie dog races last year.

We can enter Wienergal's Peaches Marie and Farfel in the blueberry pie eating contest-winners for sure there.

Miss Dolly Doglet can give the ribbons and bones (gold, silver and bronze) to the finest .

Anyone else want in on this? http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/hapfac01.gif

Anyone out there up for a high jump event in these Olympic games? I'm waiting for dad to set up this new 42" x-pen that he exchanged the 30" one for. It will be a challenge but I'll try to clear it. Dad started me off with a dinky 24" tall pen that he had for a little girl before me that was just too easy. When he brought home the 30" one I cleared it the first time he left the house. I'm a little worried about this new 42" model. Anyone know where I can get a pole in case I need to move from the high jump to the pole vault?
