I went to the pet store and bought Toby a Kong. Came home and stuffed it with peanut butter. He took one lick and walked away. I think my baby does not like parnut butter. I tried this several different times for a couple of days. He refused it every time. So, does anyone have any ideas on what else I can put in it?

Kibble
Yogurt, plain (freeze it)
Spoon of canned food
treats, any doggie cookie you may have, break 'em up and shove 'em in there.
Also, check www.kongcompany.com (http://www.kongcompany.com) They have a whole web page where they give you ideas to stuff the Kongs with. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

I know you mentioned Toby does not seem to like peanut butter, but I break up a bunch of doggy cookies and mix them with a little peanut butter, Oscar goes nuts over it.

As Owen's Mom said, I use canned dog food. It is the only time Twix gets canned food and it drives her nuts. She simply can't wait til I get that kong filled to give it to her. Sometimes I freeze the food in the kong and she seems to like that too.

I also put peanut butter and kibble in the kong. I've also used baby food - like green beans - and frozen it. I got this idea from someone on another board. It's not fattening like the peanut butter either.

The stuffing depend some what on which size Kong you have. Aggie my little puppy mill rescue use to love it when I would take a snausage and put in her Kong. She had one of the small Kong and if I put a snausage in it then squashed the end just a little so it didn't fall out too easily she had a great time. She never enjoyed it if she had to really had chew had to try and get the treat out. I think her teeth were always a little tender haven been a puppy mill mother. She would pick up the Kong and drop it till eventually the end of the snausage would slide out of the Kong and she would then gobble it down. I never did find any other treats she liked as well as a snausage. If I smashed the end too hard she would eventually give up and the snausage would remain in the Kong till I'd get home and help her get it out.
Frank prefers the medium size Kong to the small (actually they boys prefer rhinos to Kongs) and marrow bone wedges very nicely into either so that he has to really lick and work to get it out. Tanner likes either size Kong. You can use dry dog treats wedged into the center, kind of roll a puperoni into the Kong so that it is rolled along the inside of the Kong and they will both work till all is gone. Actually Frank will clean out his Kong while I'm gone (we generally use these to help minimize separation anxiety) and Tanner prefers to save his and work on them after I get home. At times this has caused some minor battles since Frank is convinced that Tanner must be getting some extra treats.

If you freeze the stuff inside, how do they ever get it out? Or is that the point, to keep them busy?

Oscars Mom,
If you freeze the kong, it does take a little longer for them to get it out, but that's the whole idea - to keep them busy! But it doesn't really take that long - at least not for Chester. Once he carries the kong around in his mouth for a while and licks it, it becomes unfrozen! I have the small kongs, but I think the bigger ones might be better. It doesn't take long to finish a small one! So I might invest in a larger one the next time I'm buying for the dogs - which is usually every week!

I stuff my doggies kongs with weird stuff... one of their favs. is Banana's Peanutbutter and Raisens... i mix it all togather and stuff it in there then put it in the freezer for about a hour or so. I also sometimes fill their kongs with sugar free applesauce and freeze it which they loveeeee!!! They also like it stuffed with cheerios! We have the med. size black kongs... i just bought 8 of them about 2mos ago... i still have some of the med size red ones though but they ate through most of those... lol http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

You guys have tons of great ideas for me to try. I put soome jerky in it and he has been getting some out every now and then. He does not work on it for very long befor he gets bored with it. I think I just need to find that special treat to put in it. I am going to try your ideas out and see witch one he likes best. Thanks everyone! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif

Vegemite makes their day! Its sorta good for them (vegetable based), and they love the taste. I was spraying a cat toy with catnip and they fell in love with the kong I picked up with catnip still on my hands.

Well, so far after trying several different things Toby has decided that cheese is a great thing to have in his kong. However I am going to try more things. Maybe the kong is just not "his thing". He has got to be the pickiest dog in the world!

Question. I am assuming that any food that remains in the kong for some time must be removed to avoid bacteria. Unless, I also assume, the dog gets all of the treats out. Am I correct? I am not too familiar with the product. Also, are the kongs easy for the dogs to chew into pieces and possibly hurt themselves?

There's not many a dachshund that would leave even the smallest bit of food in their Kong toy... http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif
Dry biscuts or kibble aren't going to be a problem. You could keep an eye on the pup and if they didn't finish something wet, you could rinse the Kong out with hot water, no problem.

I always wash Oscar's after he's done with it. Owens Mom is right its unlikely for any food to be left.
