My dachsies love the hercules bones. They have the longest life span and seem to satisfy their chewing needs. We have 2, a red one and a blue one. The blue is the favorite and is chewed to a nub while the red is virtually untouched.
Sunday, my nephews were trying to confuse Buddy, the ballaholic, by throwing both balls at once. He would invariably retrieve the blue one and ignore the red. Anybody else notice a color preference in toys?

I have read that dogs see color, but in a more limited scope than we do. I think Dogs see colors like we see them at twilight -they are less distinct.

Have not noticed a color preference with my boys and their toys yet....

At least one of the girls we had when I was growing up had color preferences. I remember we had a set of about 4-6 kids play balls all identical expect for color. One (red i think) was a favorite, another (yellow) would get played with and the rest (blue, white, ...) were never touched.

Penny has a preference for bright orange balls. Her first ball was orange. When it started to wear out we got package of 2 more, (same balls but green and yellow). Penny would fetch them if they were thrown but would very rarely bring them to us, instead she'd bring her tattered, no longer squeaky orange ball. We thought it was just an affectionate attachment to her first ball until my husband found another orange one while on a business trip and brought it home. Penny was thrilled and immediately took to the new squeaky one, prefering it to her torn original ball. I wondered if the orange dye caused the ball to have a different texture, taste or smell that only she could detect, but now I wonder if it really is the color!

Our Wotandefinitelyprefers certain colored balls (he's a ball addict). We have bought him identical balls of all sorts of colors but he greatly prefers orange or yellow. He wouldn't even play with green or purple even though they were the same shape and type. IMO it's that they are brighterto him and he simply can see them better.

Perhaps Wotan would like to join Buddy's Ballaholics Anonymous group.
