Wow..what a year we are having! Not to get all political - but you have to wonder how much of this evil weather has to be attributed to global warming and the damage we have done to our enviornment.
Between this and the gas prices, it's definately time for me to go look at that new Hybred car......and I drive a really fuel efficient/low emmissions one as it is!
:bighug: to all effected and you knowyou have our love and prayers....

OMG! Tampa doesn't allow any SUVs or big trucks on their Skybridge today and Sarasota is almost out of gas. Gainesville is all boarded up, no gas, Publix is empty, etc.

Yep, this is what it looks like! I live less than 15 minutes from where most of those pictures were taken, and they're not even the worst of it. Most of those pics were taken after the waters had receded - at least where the cars are. It was 8-10 feet deep at one point where all the cars are parked. There are still more than 100 roads in the area closed, and some of them will be for weeks while they repair roads or bridges that were totally washed away. The damage is double what Hurricane Isabel did - if you remember, I was without power for a week with Isabel. The winds weren't bad, but we got 10 inches of rain in 12 hours on already saturated ground. It's the wettest summer on record. And I gotta tell you - those pics are just the beginning of what it looks like.

Oh Jennie! I forgot how close you were to that! :bighug:
Well, we're swimming in rainwater down here, too. :(

I'm watching you guys on TV right now! I'm surprised you still have power - looks like you're not getting the worst of it, but it sure looks bad enough! Be safe!

You and me both! And I bought all that "no fridge needed" food!
We're a rarity right now- and should have some houseguests for a few days as soon as it's safe for people to drive. Tomorrow is going to be steamy- and not having airconditioning would be torture.
Thanks for the thoughts! :)

I was discussing the global warming myth just this morning with another driver. Seems silly to me that a particular group of people believe that we humans are the sole cause of all these weather patterns. The planet has been around much longer than the recorded weather data... who is to say that this just isn't another cycle of what is normal? Likely we are going to have a long, cold winter as a result of these hurricanes... they are the planet's cooling mechanism.
Everybody forgets about God... seems that the Creator of the planet pretty much knows what He is doing.

Other things that can affect the weather are volcanic eruptions, which can affect the weather for long time afterwards. There are always volcanic eruptions in the sea, but I'm not sure how much that affects the weather, if any.
Rena can probably give you more information, since it has been years since I had geology classes.

Roadpup - I recognize that the global warming debate has proponents and detractors on both sides of the issue. That's what makes life so interesting - we all have different opinions and I am the BIGGEST fan in the world in sharing them openly.
My personal opinion is that combustable fuels have had an effect on our environment, and that alternative sources of energy are available. I make my personal choices to support those alternative sources and try not to shove my beliefs down anyone.
While I don't share in your beliefs in God as Creator of the planet, I certainly respect them.

J

OK... I will jump into the middle of the Global Warming discussion. In the big picture, we are in a warming phase at the moment, but the history of the climate has been quite cyclic and it is much more complex that just atmospheric change... it does include volcanic eruptions on land and in the ocean, ocean volume and circulation changes, fires (we have had a lot of those out west lately adding to CO and CO2), dust storms from Africa, and biologic changes. So, in a way, everyone is right... from my perspective we are just living in a moment in time in the history of the earth and the universe. As humans, we do have a responsibility to make the wisest use of what we have been given. There are things that we can change and there are things that we cannot change... part of the problem is recognizing the difference.

Thanks for you comments Rena. I recently saw a show on PBS Discovery (can't remember which) on volcanic impacts on global weather. According to that presentation we are something like 150 years over due for a major volcanic eruption. Mount St. Helens barely counts as a hick up. The type of large eruptions they were saying we are overdue for they claim can cool the world by several degrees for up to ten years. It's hard to remember the details so any number I give are approximate. I believe they said on average the world sees one of those about every 50 years so we have missed several cycles.
I think there are many things that contribute to weather changes and the weather patterns have gone though many cycles since before mankind became industrialized. The popular press likes to grab hold of a single theory and run with it. There are many theories and it's very difficult to say which are correct.
There are many things people don't realize the impact of. IT's must have been the 70s energy crisis that the consulting engineering firm I was working for was ask to help come up with some energy savings tips. One interesting thing they came up with was if you consider the energy required to manufacture a florescent light and the shortening of it's life that happens every time it goes through a power up cycle it is more energy efficient to leave the light on if you will be returning to the room withing the ext 6-8 hours. So if you have florescent lights in your office and want to save their global impact on resources leaven them on when you go to lunch or take a break only shut them off at night.

How awful. So much devastation. And I think they only predicted a few inches of rain from Gaston for you guys Jennie? I hope all is well in your area. You know, although we haven't been hit w/any of this, it would be nice to give everyone a breather right about now, huh?

Oh that looks horrible. How ironic it is that you get too much water back east and we here in the west are dry as a bone. So dry the ground cracks cause it's soo dry. It's just not fair! Try sending it out to us in the desert please!:(

my sister sent me this website - thought it showed some interesting pics of what happened here last week from one person's perspective.

As I type this, we're under a tornado watch due to the remnants of Francis, and there have already been three confirmed tornados touchdown in the area today. One was less than a mile from my sister's house! What's up with all this crazy weather?
Yolanda, watch out, it's headed your way!

When I first saw the post I knew what wake was but I thought TS Gaston was a boat for some reason. I've never even been on a boat!
