Perhaps there is already something like this....but a map that each of us can go plot our location on. Then at a glance folks could see where members are...

This is the one that live journal uses. I do not know if they would be willing to share the code or not, so this is just a thought...but I do understand it might be too big to be possible.

It would be a fun idea. I don't know what sort of permissions/expense would be involved, though. I'll defer to our techie experts.
