Ok....looking for some opionions..I suppose this could be used for a poll. What are your guys favorite toys that are durable? (not including kongs, or ones to stuff food inside?)...My guy seems to go through toys very very rapidly.

Maggie just loves to play with a small, stuffed Taz that I won in one of those fifty cent skill crane games. After spending up to $20 here and there trying to find the perfect toy she'd actually play with, I was really surprised to see her choice. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wow.gif
It's the only toy she'll actually play with. Since he's so small, she can pick him up and throw him around. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/dizzy.gif She just loves her Taz! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Hee hee! Sorry I just had to laugh! I've seen several pics of Maggie and this seems to be her favorite position.......expert at giving the L@@K! She reminds me so much of my own Dolly Dollikers. As far as toys are concerned, my girls aren't huge players. Maybe because of their background (rescues). But as I've posted before, when Maddie DOES play, her favorite toy is her Flat Frog. All the stuffin' is long gone, but she does love it when I throw him so she can retrieve and bring it back to mommy to throw again. Dolly also seems to like a FLAT toy. A kind of square critter. Not sure what he was once. Although she's getting better at playing, at one time, Dolly was intimidated by anything that squeaked. She would act afraid of it. Now she has an octopus that squeaks and she could care less. How old is Maggie?

Sandi,
You are absolutely right ... that was a typical Maggie picture ... she's ready to go to sleep AND giving the L@@K! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif And, to answer your question, Maggie is four years old.
Maggie isn't really a big player either. I also believe this is due to her background. In fact, for a while, I didn't think she knew how to play. But, one day, she just picked Taz up and started throwing her head back and forth with him in her mouth. It really cracked me up. Then, she must have gotten self-conscious when she noticed me watching, because she stopped playing. This continued until she finally got to the point where she couldn't care less who was watching her. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

First off, both our babies, if they could, would play with those squeaky stuffed animals from petsmart. Unfortunately, mommy has gotten tired of sewing them back up, plus Chaucer is a chew and swallow dog...so pretty much, they don't play with stuffed animals anymore. Gidget might get one if Chaucer's not around, but as she gets bigger, she's learning her brother's chew habits...
I think the favorite non-foodstuffed toy on the "mommy approved toy list" is probably a good old fashioned tennis ball. They also have a hard, red rubber ball they like. Chaucer really likes to play catch/fetch with it, whereas gidget more like to bat it around the room, almost like a cat would. She really doesn't have the same strong retriever traits that Chaucer does.
They also love their bully sticks and they "play" with them too--tug of war either with each other, or with an obliging human (not winning doesn't seem to bother them). chaucer likes to play fetch with the bully stick too.
Other than that they tend to like to play with each other more than with toys. One of their favorite games is 15.5 lb Chaucer laying down, and 5 lb Gidget charging across the kitchen trying to hurdle him--it's HYSTERICAL to watch. They are pretty big into "tag" --which involves racing around the kitchen at top doxie speed....neither dog ever seems to ALWAYS be chased, or ALWAYS be chasing, so I think they take turns being "it". *laughs*
They also really like to play with leaves, and mommy is constantly trying to keep them from eating leaves (which are EVERYWHERE right now). The vet says the leaves won't hurt them so long as they don't eat too many of them, so I try not to worry too much about that.

hmmmmm...although I'm getting responses..no actual toy is being suggested. I suppose there is no such thing!!
Loren
I think you're right Loren . . . there is no such thing.
We've given up on stuffed toys. The plastic squeaky toys that have survived all 3 of the kids are the cheapest looking things and I have no idea why they've never been destroyed like all the others. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/dizzy.gif Tennis and Racquet Ball balls are always a good choice. We also have a couple of big rubber Jacks (4 or 5 inches high) that they like. We just kept getting toys and if they survived 5 minutes with Duck Butter . . . we knew it was a keeper! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif The rest were thrown out.
If you ever find a toy that's a "sure bet" . . . let the rest of us know! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

Vicki, that Maggie is one cute dachsie! What a great photo! Thanks for the morning smile!
As far as the ideal toy....dachshunds are tough in this regard. My friends who have two standard poodles buy them stuffed toys, which last for YEARS. In my house, a stuffed toy lasts until (a) the wieners rip it open, pull out the stuffing, and "kill" the squeaker (usually under 15 minutes), or (b) I take it away so they'll get at least two days of play out of it... It's the instinctive thing, isn't it? Small, squeaky, furry object: KILL IT!!! But they DO love to fling and chase and chew on the empty carcasses. Farfel still loves the first toy I ever bought him--it used to be a stuffed carrot; now it's a flat, brownish-orange scrap.
Oh--and Peaches ADORES her food cube! That one is a big success!

No matter what the package says (rough & tough, blah, blah, blah)I think Oscar can destroy it. He loves stuffed ones, but I keep having to sew them back up and then he eventually goes in for the final kill. Rope toys last, but get boring fast. I recently ordered a bunch of toys from pets.com. The Pedigree extra safe squeaky toy has lasted and he loves it, has not pulled any pieces off of it. The other toys I ordered he got bored with quickly. These little guys are so tough on their toys.

Thanks Jen for those 2 web sites. I have ordered catalogs. Are there things cheaper do you know than other places?

Otis also has to "kill" every stuffed toy, and I have tried everything. He pulls the stuffing out and chows it down, so this is a big no-no. I found a puppet without stuffing and closely matted fur, but he is tearing it apart piece by piece. He has a rope toy that has lasted, but of course he has lost interest. He has two rubber toys that have held up. One looks like a news-
paper and it's called "The Daily Growl", the other is a human foot. They both squeak. He had a Porky Pig and poor Porky was missing limbs, ears, nose, you name it. His favorite still seems to be his Kong (when stuffed) and his rawhide sticks. He also likes plastic bottles to bat around. Once he bites through them, I take them away. His BIG TREAT is the cutest thing ever. I buy him these for an extra treat every now and then. I buy them at Cub for $1.29. They are little white rawhide baby shoes. The whole thing is rawhide, even the laces. Otis loves these! He first takes out the laces and then tears the shoe apart. When he's had enough he gets busy and "buries" the parts in his blanket for later. Sometimes they're still in plain view, but if he thinks they're buried then they are! Well, I hope this helps some, didn't mean to write a book here!

Twix does the burrying thing too. Only she does it with "Bonz" and that is the only treat she does it with. And you are so right, it doesn't matter if it is burried or not. But, it Twix thinks I've seen it she has to dig it up and reburry it so I don't know where it is!!
The only toy that has lasted with Twix (and believe me I have bought many) is a little red latex ball that has little spiney things all over it. And it is one of the few balls she likes. I think it is because it is latex and she can fit it in her mouth and bite down on it. She will not play with a tennis ball or any other hard ball. She is also one that swallows the innerds of her toys and I have given up on buying soft toys for her even though those are the absolute best as far as she is concerned. I did recently buy a little puppy at wally world that is just material and a squeaker, no stuffing. We will see how long that lasts. She has already chewed off an ear, the tail and the nose and she has only had it a day. I keep taking it away from her to "save it". I don't know what I am saving it for though!!!
Oh, those lovable dachsies!!

Hi Loren,
I've decided that the best toys that Bugsy has are his rubber balls. Some with nubs and some without. Some of them he can chew bits out of but not very fast and they've been getting lost before they've been too destroyed to use. Other of his balls, he can't even chew out any pieces. He loves to bounce the balls around and catch them. His latest 'love' is a ball with a bell in it. I was worried he was going to chew into it very quickly but it's been over a week now and the ball is still usable.
He just loves this latest ball with the bell. He wants to take it everywhere! He even wants to take it to bed but I take it away from him because I don't want him using it unsupervised.
I've never given him stuffed toys/animals because I have no intention of cleaning up any stuffing mess or repairing them like some of the dedicated souls on this BB. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif
Also, I find if I 'hide' some of his toys for a couple of days, when he 'finds' them, he's all atwitter again as if it was a new toy.
Hope you find something good. I recommend the rubber balls, they were pretty cheap from our local pet supply store.

Abby is know to 'kill' all her dogs. The cat's fat tummy doesn't let her get to the squeaker. It has no ears left, they left in the first hour. She has 4 of them now - all still squeak!

Bobo loves his stuffed doggy, I got it free at a yard sale. He also likes his green bobo toy. Now his puppers are a different story, they chew up every toy they get hold of. I think the best toy for them is the hard tennis balls, then I have to make sure I put it up when done or they will devour that too!
