I am so proud! :bounce: My 7 year old started school Aug 6 and just got her progress report. She got a 97 in Math, 95 in Spelling and an 85 in READING! Whoo hoo. So, what's the big deal, you might ask? Well, She started out in the first grade reading horribly. She was so upset that she couldn't read as well as some of the other kids. After the first progress report in the 1st grade, her other grades were wonderful (Math esp) but she just couldn't get the reading down. So, we decided we were going to have to do afterschool tutoring at $25 per hour three days a week. :caffeine: But then, they told us that she could go into a class called Club Read or Title 1. This worked WONDERS!:circle: She is doing SO well and her teachers this year (2nd grade) have said she just loves to try to read outloud to the class. My daughter has always been confident and outgoing EXCEPT in this. :flower: The class is held during school hours and there are 6 children for 3 teachers w/all sorts of tools available to the students. I tried so hard to help her read but I couldn't do it. The patience those teachers have is amazing! I was the one getting frustrated and then that would make my daughter upset. It was awful!:crying: Her club read teacher told me that I needed to understand that reading was a completely foreign language to her and it would be like me trying to read a sentence in Russian or German ~ I wouldn't know what I was reading. Anyway, this made sense and has helped me to help her but the biggest help has been from those teachers and from herself. She was so excited to get that 85! :D :bounce: :cheer: I told her I was coming straight to work to brag to all of you!;)

WOW! That is fantastic! Now that you know that she needs to practice reading out loud, maybe you could have her do it for a few minutes each day. Just bite your tongue and be patient and encouraging!

Awesome! My son actually wasn't a really good reader until later grade 1 & 2. Then by Grade 4 he was reading at a Grade 7 Level!!! All by himself. Math is another story....We've had him in private Math help for a year now. If he didn't have that he'd fall behind. Same thing. I couldn't teach him. It needs to be someone else!
Does your school ever start EARLY! By kids just went back to school yesterday.

Yes they started LAST MONTH! I remember going back after Labor Day too.....very early to be in August. They get out in May...like the first or second week I think.:dizzy:
Do your schools give alot of homework? She comes home w/4 or 5 pages each night except for Fridays. This is great at times because it helps her remember things but right now w/her reading comprehension skills, I have to make sure she understands what she is doing and why.....makes for a long night sometimes for Mom :afraid:

NO homework except spelling lists until Grade 4.
I'm glad my son's teacher hands out regular homework because my son being in Grade 6 needs to have that kind of schedule. Jr. High starts next year.
My daughter goes to an All Girls School which is a middle school -
grade 4 to 9. She just picked out her options since yesterday was the first day. She's in Grade 4. I will expect some homework but her Agenda already states it won't be more than 20 minutes. (5 minutes per Grade so Grade 6 should be 30 minutes)

Wow! Congratulations! Way to go! :cheer: :bounce2: :cheer: :bounce2: :cheer:
Another way to help your daughter is to get her some books and magazines on things that really interest her. This will keep her interest and she'll learn how to read better because she wants to either know more information or find out what happens in the end. :D

Congratulations for your daughter. The schools here started a couple of weeks ago and get out early/mid May. Not like when I was in school and we started right after labor day and didn't get out till early June.
Spelling as I'm sure many of you already know :D was always my weakest point in school. My reading ability deepened on how you wanted to judge reading ability. Since I never learned phonics if I was reading and came across a word I didn't recognize I would stumble if trying to read out loud. If reading to myself I could generally figure out the word by how it was being used in the sentence. At the end of sixth grad they did reading test on all of us that were just reading out loud. They placed me in a remedial reading class in junior high school. The reading teacher in junior high school stressed speed and comprehension. Those were my two strong points in reading. At the middle of the year she left to have her baby and spend time with it. While in the remedial classes grades weren't suppose to be above a C she gave me an A because she said that's what I would have gotten in her regular reding class. Some of the people who had bee judged excellent readers in the grade school test struggled once they were being tested for comprehension. Perhaps being in the third grade before anyone figured out I needed glasses had something to do with my slow start in reading and lack of desire to read at an early age.
