Personally, I don't recommend pig ears. My dachsie, Quincee, choked on one and stopped breathing a few years ago. It has gotten small enough that he thought he could eat it, and it was soggy, and it got wedged in the back of his throat, therefore blocking his breathing. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/eek.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/sick.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/uh-oh.gif Just wanted to warn you guys... Has anybody else here had a simaler experience?

We give our boys pigs ears but monitor them and when the pieces get small we take them away. Our friends have a dashie who choked on one a few years ago - she's o.k. but it was really scary for her hoomans. We also get knuckle bones from our meat market for them in the summer - they can eat them outside and - they stink tooooo bad to have in the house in the winter time.

We use to give our dachshund and yorkie smoked ribs until the vet told us that after there chewed on for awhile the bone starts to sliver off and these pieces can choke dogs by becoming logged in the throut or can cut open their throut. I never knew that pig ears where dangerous too! Thanks.

We don't feed processed pig ears. Raw pig ears would be just fine, though. I wouldn't suggest them as a regular item as they tend to be higher in fat, but as an occassional treat they would be fine.

Cooked bones are never a good idea, as cooked bones can splinter. This inculdes, baked, fried, microwaved, etc. Cooking changes the composition of the bone and makes it brittle. Raw bones, on the other hand, are okay as Raw meaty bones (RMB's) and recreational bones (like knuckle bones, marrow bones, etc. - the big bones which are chewed upon but not eaten).

We feed a BARF diet and love it, as do our boys!
