My 2 boys (ages 6 and 9) discovered the perfect "toy" for Rufus to play with..., are ya ready for this..., the light from a flashlight. Oh my god - Rufus is hooked on the flashlight bigtime. He chases that light and goes round and round in circles until he catches it and then we start over - this game goes on for a long time or until our hand gets tired of holding the flashlight.
Beware that once you start, your dog will not let you stop. Rufus knows where we keep the flashlight and now goes to the drawer where it is kept and cries for his new toy to come out and play.

Hi I've been away for some time and its good to be back. Another cheap toy is to blow bubbles. Kojak goes crazy trying to catch them. Using a bubble wond makes lots of them and he trys to get them all before they hit the ground. Its funniest videos material. lOl

Our 7 year old, Kaze, adores playing with empty 2-liter bottles. I found this out by making the mistake of tossing an empty one over our railing and into the kitchen -- it was IMMEDIATELY persued and pounced upon, then picked up and shaken 'to death'. He only paws at them to get them rolling enough to pounce on them again and again, and doesn't really chew on them. If he did, I can see them being a real hazard by the cap coming off and the sharp edges if the bottle itself was pierced... So a warning on that note.
Oh, and the other perennial favorite "cheap" toy is an old sock. These dogs would give up eating for a day if only to play with an old sock (and that says a lot since two dogs are Dachsies!) I'm sure Kaze, our resident "hunter", would also really LOVE playing tug or throw/retrieve with a knotted up old towel, too!

My first doxie, Dixie used to go bonkers over the reflective light from watches or shiny jewelry. It would drive her right up the wall....literally. My grrrrls now aren't as crazy about toys except for the baby hedgehog I just happened to pick up last week. They both LOVE H. Hog and each have there own way of "killing" him. Dolly does the typical shake, bite and shake manuevers while Maddie pins him down and lets him die a slow death by pulling out his fur! Geeeez, I just vacuumed and now have Hedgehog fur all over the livingroom. :D Aren't they just pure entertainment????

My little guy, Pappy, loves to run around with his bath towel, sit on it, and chew the corners. Occasionally, he'll attack with the head shake. He also loves ice cubes. The sounds of them being cracked loose from their tray will set him running to the kitchen with the hope of catching one that "accidentally fell" on the floor. He'll grab it, run under the coffee table, and chew on that til it's gone!

Well Modem and Molly have a purple sock that originally was Modem's they battle over this once in a while.
Molly and Modem also like chasing icecubes and used to chew on them until they found out how cold they can be then they quit after the chase.

I'd pretty much forgotten the old sock as a toy. When I was growing up we would put an old ball in the toe of a sock then tie a knot to keep the ball inside the sock. Be aware once a dachsie gets a hold of the other end of the sock and starts shaking it can deliver a good wallop if you or any thing else that gets hit. The socks got taken away when ever a ball came out since one of my folks dogs once swallowed one of my mothers anklet socks. The good think was we noticed he working hard to swallow something and started checking my mother soon discovered the missing sock. A call to the vet who told us to use salt to induce vomiting and the sock came back up. If no one had noticed her swallowing the sock we could have been facing a serious blockage problem.

I tried the tennis ball in the sock trick and Rufus loves it. I however, want to keep yelling at my children to pick up their sock and put it in the laundry.
